Just a reminder this tournament is this weekend. Since the east coast is busy with T1 this weekend lets make this THE event for the midwest.
Hope to see everyone there!

how was the turnout for this one?  Did you get the top 8 decks? I see there's another one in May (unfortunately I'll be in the Virgin Islands and won't be able to make it   Very Happy )

I think if you gave out more info about the tournaments after they happen, it would generate more interest too...

EDIT

from emailer in Wisconsin

Hey Dante,
I was reading TMD and saw you asking about the top 8.  Only 20 people turned out for this tournament compared to the 35 or so last time.

After 5 rounds of swiss the top 8 was:

1) Dragon
2) 7/10 Split
3) Mask/Tnt
4) Keeper (2 Mox Monkey, Exalted)
5) Keeper (2 Matrix, Humility, 3 Decree)
6) Tog
7) Madness
8) Ravager

Dragon-Ravager= Dragon
Keeper-Keeper= Keeper w/Decree
7/10 Split-Madness= 7/10 Split
Hulk-Mask/Tnt= Mask/Tnt

Top 4
7/10 Split-Mask/Tnt= Mask/Tnt
Keeper-Dragon= Keeper

Top 2
Keeper-Mask/Tnt

A split was worked out for the Ruby.

Good idea about discussing the tournament after it happened. I think I'll give an analysis of some decks since everyone I played was quite good. Also let everyone know about the good times they missed. And somehow out of 20 people ravager affinity makes it to top 8 and I didn't!

Anyway here's what I played

4 Standstill
4 Mana Drain
4 Force of Will
3 Annul
3 Fire/Ice
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
4 Brainstorm
1 Misdirection
4 Disk
3 Stifle

4 Tropical Island
3 Volcanic Island
4 Polluted Delta
4 Mishra's Factory
3 Fairy Conclave
1 Strip Mine
4 Wasteland
1 Island
1 Library
1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mox Sapphire

SB:
4 Oath of Druids
2 Darksteel Colossus
1 Spike Feeder
2 Gaea's Blessing
3 REB
1 BEB
2 Rack and Ruin

First of all I’m operating on about 3.5 hours of sleep. Me and some of my boys went to Inferno, this Goth club in Madison. The club was a good time except for 2 things: my friend Art cock-blocking me when I was trying to talk to this hot ‘Goth for now’ chic, and this chic for not really liking me. Oh well. Side note Madison has ‘Goth for now’ as opposed to ‘Goth for life’ like we have in Milwaukee. Now the girls there are a lot hotter than here but no piercings, no tattoos, hence the term ‘Goth for now’; Anyway on with the report.

I had been play testing U/R Landstill for the last month and my brother decided at the last minute he wouldn’t be coming so I decided to run the Oath board, my brother was testing an Oath deck and the cards were mine.

I think it’s a good idea since Landstill’s worse match up IMO is fat aggro. So I get the Oath board together, thanks for the extra Colossus Pete, and make my board based on last month’s tournament. Assuming I have enough graveyard hate w/ Gaea’s Blessing turn in my decklist.

Match 1: Keeper (Sorry I forgot your name)

Game 1:
I waste, he wastes, I counter he counters, and I think I stifle a Wasteland and Conclave for the win after about 30 minutes.

Board: +3 REB –3 Annul

Game 2:
He boards in a butch of stuff and with only about 25 minute left we need to play fast. More like the last game except Disenchant gets Factories along with STP and REB get Conclave! The End is the best part. He’s got an Angel token and me at 4 life. The time is up and he’s on his last turn so he has to beat me now or else he get an L instead of a draw. I have 2 cards in hand. He attempts to attack. I cast Ice on the token, he Forces, and I REB back, with no cards in anyone’s hand I win. Great game.

1-0-0
1-0-0

Match 2: Berserk Mask (Sorry again)

This guy won the last tournament and I assumed I would have a tough match, I questioned if I even had a chance to win since this guy’s specialty is turn 2 wins.

Game 1:
Like my first match, here a Strip there a Strip, everywhere a Strip Strip. A good game but I always have an Annul, Force or Disk to take care of him. Also one game he Spoiled himself and Necro’ed himself in another just forgot which game he did what, Manlands for the win.

Board: +2 Rack and Ruin –1 Disk –1 Fire/Ice

Game 2:
He plays a first turn Xantid Swarm and I decide not to counter it because I have Rack and Ruin in my hand, if he Masks I can Rack and Ruin on my turn until I draw a Disk. More Strips and Mask and a 1 CC Facedown comes into play. He passes turn and I R&R his facedown and Mask and guess what, not a Swarm, a face down Swarm probably would have won him the game however I got his Dreadnaught and Mask. Still a good game from here but eventually Manlands for the Win

2-0-0
3-0-0

Doing good so far and now there’s a buzz about what people are playing and who lost to whom. Keeper losing to a Blue beats deck that’s now 2-0? Way to go rogue, 7/10 Split is 2-0. I hope I get to play Blue beats next. Damien’s eying up my FBB duals I have to trade. Prop’s to Craig for thinking its my day to win.

I’ll write the rest of the tournament report as well as my impressions on the day in a few days. I have to get to class plus work on a 10 page paper that’s due in about 10 days on Nazi Germany and Ernst Rohm.
Cheers all!

Part 2:

Match 3: 7/10 Split

Crap, no blue beats, actually I was fearing that deck more. Type 1 can be strange sometimes, by what I mean is that some decks can do good in certain T1 match ups that aren’t supposed to be in T1 at all. For those who read this and know me I’ll reference the epic battles that Matt and I have playtesting Oshawa Stompy vs. Mono Red Control Mirrodin Block. How many times did Oshawa Stompy get owned my a Furnace Dragon? Too many to name and that’s why I play Fish and Landstill instead of Oshawa Stompy. Landstill is good in those craptacular matches because of disk, anyway on with the report. Besides I’ll need to prove myself to win this Mox today.

This was the nicest of my opponents all day and also gave me the best match I had and I thank him for driving from Iowa just to play in our tournament.

Game 1:
So far no mulligans today but maybe I should have as he has as he but it ‘the most broken draw he’s had yet with the deck’.  Something like Workshop, Lotus, Gilded, Thirst, discarding Titan and some other stuff. Somehow a Disk flies out of my hand (literally not in the game) and he sees it. So he Twists in the next 2 turns deciding he has to get the Disk out of my hand. This was a game probably because of that move. Otherwise I think he would have owned me. Welders come out and get Fires but some Mana Drain mana and Triskellion take me out.

Board: +2 Rack and Ruin, +3 REB – 4 Mana Drain –1 Disk

I know what you guys are thinking “What no Drains! But REB was better in this match up and I was getting tired of taking burn for 8 w/ no Manlands around to save me.

Game 2:
I win and win quickly, that’s about all I remember. I think I stifled something like a Welder and/or a Titan but Disk and R&R saves the Day, on to Game 3.

Game3:
He hard casts a Titan on turn 2 and gets in for 14 points of damage. However I resolve a disk and lock him down with a Standstill with a mitt full of good shit. Too bad time runs out before I can kill him. We draw.

2-0-1
4-1-0

A comment about this deck since I was expecting it to own this tournament since last month we had Slavers running all over the place; Landstill has a very good match up against this deck since so many of its lands are non basic. Make sure to resolve a disk and Strip their Workshops. Oh yeah on one more thing the sky is blue, but only during the day. (I like stating the obvious).

Match 4: Dragon – played by Damien

Damien is the local trading Guru in Milwaukee. He carries enough Ancestrals in his little binder to bail one of his boys out for murder. I’ve never played him and he really doesn’t play much; he just plays for the chance of winning a Mox for $15. He’s offering a draw to me since he doesn’t really know how that match is going to go and we both assume we’ll be Top 8. I should have taken it since I had no good answers for him in my board.

Game 1:
I get owned and we trade some counters

Game 2:
I get owned but give some shock value with the siding in of Gaea’s blessing as the Ambassadors eye’s pop open. However he combo’s out again on the same turn and pings me to death with a Shivan Hellkite.

I think I had no chance in this match up since I saw only one wasteland in both games. Also my Tormod’s Crypts are in my binder.

2-1-1
4-3-0

Match 5: TNT-Mask (a.k.a. expensive.dec) – played by Rich Ryan

There’s 2 Ryans in the neighborhood here and I call this one Rich Ryan since he plays w/ everything Beta or foil.  I’ve played this deck a few times before and not sure about 1st match but I have my secret tech in my board, which hasn’t been used yet today.

Game 1:
Beats, beats and more beats, I’m in a hurry to lose so I can get my board in and win.

Board: +2 Blessing +4 Oath +2 Colossus +1 Weaver –4 Standstill –1 Fire/Ice –1 Drain   –2 Disk –1 Annul

Game 2:
I turn 1 Ancestral and have to discard Darksteel Colossus so the cat is out of the bag to some extent. I cast Oath after he gets a welder out. He only lasts a few more turns as Colossus beats get the best of him.

Game 3:
This game witnesses probably my only big playing mistake today as I tap out to do something stupid while he casts a Mask on his turn while I have an Annul in my hand. Next turn Dreadnaught and me without an Oath yet. He gets his Survival gets him and Anger in the board and I get no answer and am dead in about 3-4 turns. I think this game I was too preoccupied with getting and Oath out instead of playing my opponent. I deserved to lose.

2-2-1
5-5-0

Anyway the Keeper I played in the first round and Rich Ryan w/ expensive.dec make it to the finals after about 4 hours of playing rounds. They make an arrangement to buy the other one’s half of the Mox and call it a day.

Meanwhile I get to eat, put together Smmenatog and do some play testing with real cards. I proxied Smmenatog about a week ago for playtesting purposes and loved and owned with it in playtesting; however after getting my ass handed to me a few times with Team LWOW standing around laughing at me I think I better stick with Landstill for the next tournament.

Props:
Everyone for coming, I know some people drove quite a bit to get here, I hope to see everyone and more for the next tournament.
Damien for trading me a Berserk that I’ll probably end up borrowing to Matt for the next tournament.
Game-Universe for taking a chance on T1 tournaments w/ proxies with good prizes.
Grafted Skullcap and Imaginary Pet for being the non-tradition combo of the day.

Slops:
Me for missing anything or making a mistake in my report.
Tormod’s Crypt for being in my binder during game play.
Omega for its food being shitty, IMO.
The other Ryan for not making the tournament.
That super hot, ‘Goth for now’, short black hair babe, ***, from Inferno for being a bitch!
