Sizzling Salamander  {R} Creature -- Salamander 2/1 When ~this~ comes into play, sacrifice it unless you discard a card at random. When ~this~ comes into play, it deals 3 damage to target creature or player. *** Whether you discard a card at random or not, it's 3 damage for {R}. Discarding also yields a 2/1 creature. I always liked Minotaur Explorer, but it was always a pain to topdeck it, when I had no cards in hand. This at least gives the option of doing something useful with it even if you have nothing to discard. |

Three damage for two mana is strong in and of itself; giving the option of a 2/1 on top of that is crazy strong.

It's like vocanic hammer which isn't super strong, and it has a harder CC.
Seems ok to me.

I agree with Matt; it's basically Volcanic Hammer except with a creature attached; is it possible to make the drawback less severe, but to increase the CC? Something along the lines of... I think it would be a good idea to go with firebirds salamander but make it a 2/2 wich woul make it a good creature for type 2.

If the required discard is a red card, then this already has plenty of commitment to red. It won't need the double red in the mana cost. It seems fine in RR for the 2/1. It do requires a random discard which can be quite a rotten drawback.
Why not make it "To target CREATURE" instead of player, this would make it more like the Vision creatures (Uktabi, Nekrataal, Knights of the Mist and Man'o'War) and more flavourful. How the hell is a little salamander supposed to get so close to a mighty mage and then take 1/6 of his life away?

Now it's really really awful.
RR for the 3 point creature bolt is terrible. Discarding a card at random to get a 2/1 creature is terrible.
Combining the two upgrades it to bad. This is way too weak.

They printed Chimney Imp - there's no such thing as 'too weak.' I initially suggested a good card, but I'm okay with making "bad" cards, too. I agree, this is a little bit underpowered, but nor is it unplayable. I bet it would be a decent pick in limited, if nothing else.

Actually, this would be pretty decent. Sure, 3 damage to a creature for 2 mana isn't great, but discarding a card at random to get a free 2/1 is awesome. There's enough tempo here to make this pretty cool.
