Pro Tour-San Diego May 14-May 16, 2004 at the San Diego Convention Center. There are two Type 1 side events at Pro tour San Diego. Any San Diego or So Cal people attending any of these? I know there will be a few C&J guys there for the Tour itself. Wizards also has some Extended events listed on their website.

Friday May 14

6:00 P.M. 205 $5 Vintage (Type 1) Tournament
Constructed Tournament using the Vintage (Type 1)-format rules.

Saturday May 15

2:00 P.M. 304 $5 Vintage (Type 1) Tournament
Constructed Tournament using the Vintage (Type 1)-format rules.

As a side note, these are the events to pick up T1 cards.

I, along with a couple members of the possee, should be in attendance. San Diego is awesome, so I highly recommend to any of you to make the trip if you are somewhat contemplating it. So come out, and let's make this a BIG sanctioned tournament.

I might (emphasize, MIGHT) make it to the Saturday tournement.  If I do, it means I'll probably be bringing some of my OC/LA guys.  I'll let you know.

This tournament is happening in another day or so, and I haven't heard dick from anyone about attending? Who the fuck is going to be there? IT IS SANCTIONED TYPE 1 by WIZARDS OF THE COAST, so can we please support it? They're not going to keep running Type 1 tourneys if we can't even muster small crowds.

Pat is a homo and will not be attending, but I, along with at least a dozen other SD regulars will most likely be present. So who else is going to ante up now that Wizards has shown the willingness to support our format??

Well, both of these events were a bust. A robust attendance of 14 for Friday night's tournament, which had Control/Drain Slaver at the top, piloted by Brent Peterson, aka UnstableCornbread. Saturday's tournament featured 16 people and was won by Jeff Stones, with GermBus, who edged me out on tiebreakers (I was playing RUG TnT). We have more people than this at local tournaments in LA and SD, so this was pretty sorry.

Well, while you guys were going down there and busting each other's nuts, I was organizing for our next T1 down here.  I'll let everybody know when it's final.  It will definitely be for a signed unl Jet (ex), but the date is still up in the air.

Yeah, both tournaments had low turnouts (only 4 rounds).  However, a high proportion (> 75%) of the decks seemed to be fully powered, despite being a sanctioned tournament.  I ran Shop Slaver (2-2) day 1 and FCG (3-1) day 2.

Btw, Brent Peterson won with Shop Slaver (not Control Slaver) on day 1.  Shawn Lambeth took 2nd that day with RGB Madness.  Brent got style points for beating Shawn down with Shawn's own mongrel after stealing it with Memnarch!

My personal highlight came on day 2 when multiple sharpshooters gunned down a mongrel pumped to 5, a rootwalla (unpumped), and an arrogant wurm.

Unrelated to the tournament, but also of note: I passed the level 1 judge test!

Thanks.  I found the test to be quite easy.  I think most competent Type 1 players could do well on the comprehensive rules section, provided they understood triggered abilities, activated abilities, static abilities, turn structure, replacement effects, and read carefully.  You would have to read and learn the dci policy section, though, because that's where many people don't do well.  I read it in a couple of hours and did fine.

Can anyone take the test or do you have to assistant judge at a few events first?

Here's what you need to do to become a level 1 judge:

1) You need a DCI number
2) You need to help run some tournament(s) - usually around 6 rounds in total
3) You need at least a 70% score on the exam
4) Pass the interview.  For me, this involved a review of the exam and questions that were missed and some general questions about your intent to be a judge.

There are several different tests.  The one I took, you needed only a 55% for lvl 1, 85% for lvl 2.  It just depends on which one you get.

Yikes!  55%??  I sure hope that was a hard test! Smile

The passing level to become a level 2 judge was also 85% on the A1 (the one I took), so perhaps the passing standard for level 1 judges was raised.  Any other judges know about this?

Only 16 people on saturday is pathetic.

We really should get Don's sanctioned.  My only concern with this is that many of the people who show would not have any power in their decks.

Congrat to Jeff!

I went 2-2 on Friday with GroStill.
