Where the fuck are my pants?

So after being busy for the past four Chicago/Milwaukee tournaments due to graduating, other plans, friends graduating, and whacking off I finally am able to come to a tournament.  It will be my first since GenCon of last year.  I play Gay/r because I am not skilled with control and do not own Workshops or feel like proxying them.

At 5:00 I wake up so I can pick up my girlfriend by 5:45 so we can be at Brian's house by 6:15.  We go out to an awesome breakfast (bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, toast) and then start on the trip.  On the way we spot a viper with the license plate “haul aspâ€? and we all laugh.  Then later when 2 semis are going around 55 on the interstate our IQ drops when Brian says “dude-my dog can run faster than this, if it was a cheetah.â€?  Brian is such a dumbass.

I am told this is workshop heavy with a few control slavers being present most of the time. I adjusted my decklist accordingly and played:

Gay/r

4-Cloud
4-Grim lavamancer
2-Goblin Vandal
1-Mox Monkey
3-Flying Men (proxy-I hate you)
0-Spiketail Hatchling

4-FoW
2-Mis’D
2-Stifle
0-Daze

4-Null Rod
4-Curiosity
4-Standstill
1-Ancestral Recall
1-Time Walk

5-Waste
4-Factory
2-Conclave
4-Fetch
4-Volcanics
4-Island
1-Mox Sapphire

SB:
4-Red Blasts
2-Blue Blasts
2-Suq’Ata Firewalker
2-F/I
3-Rack and/or Ruin
2-Unsummon

My reasoning behind Spiketail is that I hate dropping curiosity on it.  Absolutely hate it.  And since supposedly this was workshop heavy it really wouldn’t be effective.  Vandals are being played for the slavery builds that were not there.

Round 1: Damien with B/U Dragon

Game1: I lay down turn 2 Null rod and that’s basically all that happened.  I get a team of 4 power and beats.  I finish with 7 cards in my hand including 2 FoW.

In: 2 BEB, 2 Unsummon
Out: I don’t remember, probably Standstills

Game 2: He intuitions and lays down Bazaar on turn 2.  I strip.  2 turns later he goes infinite but I stifle.  He FoWs and I FoW back.  He was a really cool guy and has a massive collection (who has a playset of Ancestrals?).

1-0

Round 2: Tony with bad 5c control deck (I was paired down-great for tiebreakers)

Game 1: I miss my turn 2 land drop and he lays turn 3 Masticore with Mana Vault help(?).  I can’t win.  I notice he plays Counterspell this game.

SB: In 4 Rebs
Out 1 Standstill, 1 curiosity, 2 flying men

Games 2&3 I bone him with null Rod and homosexual 1/1 creatures.

2-0

Round 3: Gregg with TNT (I can’t win)

I get my ass kicked hardcore both games because it is TNT vs. Fish.  Suq’Ata Firewalker was pretty cool with shooting welders though.

2-1

Round 4: Sean with Gay/r (mirror)

Game 1: He plays turn 2 F/I on my 2 faeries, one of them curious(dude-main F/I). Then lays Lavamancer.  I draw 3 null rod. Yes.  During the match Gregg was commentating the game including things like “dude-why did you do that.  That was a misplay.â€?  WTF COACH.  Seriously play your own game.

Sb: in, 2 beb, 2 firewalker, 2 F/I, 2 unsummon.  My reasoning was that Lavamancer wins the game which is why the BEBS and Unsummons(so I can play mine and it will be active 1st) are in and REBs are not:
Out: 4 null rods, 4 Standstills.
Game 2: He plays sword of Fire and Ice.  I mana clump.  I respect his good call at that and while I go to read the card Gregg once again says “it says you loseâ€?.  I reply “thanks, I didn’t know how to readâ€?.  I think that I can’t wait for one of my teammates Mat or Brian to beat him.

2-2

Round 5: Brian (not my teammate) Gay/r
I am knocked out of T8 because only 3-1-1 makes it.

Game 1: I lay turn 1 lavamancer.
Sb-same as before
Game 2: I lay turn 4 Firewalker and make it curious next turn.

3-2

Mat proceeds to make T4 and losing to 2 consecutive top decked Yawg Will 1 turn before he would win in 2 games. Brian Fisher makes finals and when his 3c Tog refuses the split (wtf) he completely and utterly bones him.  The owner of the store is really cool.  He is seriously awesome.

Props:
My girlfriend Stephanie for bringing food and for coming to a magic tournament
Brian for winning another tournament and bringing home another piece of power.
Mat for making top 4 and aquiring a dog chewed Mox Ruby
The breakfast diner for being awesome.
My bling for looking awesome.
Damien for being cool
Squee-see Damien

Slops:
Gregg for being a jackass
Slavery for not being there
Me for not making top 8 and disgracing team GWS
Brian and Mat for missing an exit and taking another 40 minutes to get home.
The sun for making me so incredibly burned the Friday before.

Overall it was a pretty good tournament and I will be back on August 1st to donate to the prize pool.

Excellent report.  This was probably the best tournament Game Universe has had for type 1.  The metagame was incredibly mixed compared to past tourneys and it was very fun.  Congrats to your team for owning Milwaukee again; I will get my revenge on Brian in August though as long as he doesn't topdeck as well as he did this tournament.

Also, I posted the results in the tournament forum if you are interested.

Wow Phil I didn't know we were targeting people as jackasses.  I thought that was reserved for dinner after the tourney.  Wink

I knew what it does, I was looking to see how much mana it was to equip.
