Ontario Vintage Championship II – September 4th, 2004
DUELING GROUNDS PRESENTS:

The Ontario Vintage Championship II – September 4th, 2004

Our first Type I event brought in 66 players during some really bad winter weather. This time around we're expecting attendance to reach over 80 which is unheard of for a sanctioned Type I tournament in this area. (you don't need to be a resident of Ontario to participate). As before, this event will be promoted across the province as well as south of the border to bring in the number of players we need to make this a success.

FORMAT
This is a 32K sanctioned event. The format will be Type I Constructed. Please check www.thedci.com for Vintage rules. You will be required to register your deck. We suggest printing out a deck list prior to the tournament and double-checking it so mistakes are at a minimum.

There will be a minimum 6 rounds of modified Swiss pairings. After the final round is finished, the top eight players will compete in single elimination rounds for big prizes and the title of champion.

PRIZES
The top 8 players will receive prizes. Complete prizes are still to be determined. You can check out actual scans of prizes on our website at www.dueling-grounds.com when they become available (I will post website updates on this forum). This is what we have secured so far:

MAIN EVENT:
1st prize - An Unlimited Mox Ruby in very good condition
2nd prize - TBD
3rd prize - Italian Moat signed by the artist
4th prize - Morphling
5th through 8th prize - your choice of any Revised/Unlimited dual lands that we have in stock (one per player)

SIDE EVENT:
1st prize - TBD
2nd prize - Tolarian Academy
(Side event prizes will increase according to attendance.)

There will also be a door prize and you must be preregistered to be eligible.

FREE INVITE
Bryan Finch, our previous Ontario Vintage Champion, is invited to compete free of charge to defend his title. Just don't forget your "lucky thingy"!

ENTRY FEE
The cost to enter this tournament is either $17 with a food donation or $20 without a donation.

FOOD DRIVE
Save $3 on your entry fee simply by raiding your kitchen cabinets and donating a few dollars worth of nonperishable food items. Our event is officially registered with The Daily Bread Food Bank. They are in most need of the following items: Tuna, baby formula, peanut butter, rice, canned fruit & vegetables, dried pasta, juice, powdered or canned milk and pasta sauce. Please be generous!

PREREGISTRATION
We recommend pre-registering for this event (especially for players traveling from long distances) as space is limited to 120 players. Registration at the door is on a first come, first serve basis. Please give us your complete name when pre-registering (no abbreviations please). We will confirm your registration with a reply to the address you emailed us from. Your registered spot will be held until 12:15 p.m. the day of the event. You can register at register@dueling-grounds.com

SIDE EVENTS
We will be running a sanctioned Type I constructed side event tournament beginning after round 4 when we have enough players and table space. Entry is $10 if you already entered the main event or $12 if you haven't. The K value will be determined by the number of players but will be at least 16K. We will also offer sanctioned 16K Mirrodin/Darksteel/Fifth Dawn booster drafts all day, space permitting.

SCHEDULE
Please note we are starting this tournament later in the day. This is to give players coming from long distances some extra time to travel.

10:00 a.m. Doors open.
12:15 p.m. Pre-registered spots become available on a first come, first serve basis.
12:45 p.m. Registration ends.
1:00 p.m. Tournament begins.
5:00 p.m. Order of pizza arrives.
5:30 p.m. (approx.) Side event begins.
10:00 p.m. Tournament ends (estimated time).
11:00 p.m. Doors close.

RETAIL TABLE
There will be a Dueling Grounds retail table set up with a complete selection of Magic singles, packs and accessories. We have an unlimited Black Lotus in very good condition which we'd like to trade and break down into a couple Moxes + Bazaar, Workshop or Library for future prizes. You may make inquiries in advance at wayne@dueling-grounds.com

LOCATION & DIRECTIONS
This event is located in the hall of a Royal Canadian Legion, 3591 Dundas St. W., Toronto. Please enter through the front door. Limited parking in lot available (approx. 20 spots). Side street parking also available. The club’s basement pub opens at 12:00 p.m. and is open to players 19 years of age and over. We ask patrons of the bar to remove their hats. Within walking distance is a Pizza Nova, Tim Horton’s and KFC.

Directions via TTC from subway: Take any 35 Jane bus (leaving Jane Station every 7 min.) to Dundas St. W. (about a 5 min. ride) and walk west 1 block. The Jane and Dundas intersection is distinguishable by a train bridge going over Jane just north of Dundas and a Pizza Nova on the southeast corner.

Driving eastbound on the Gardiner Expressway: If you’re west of the 427, take it north to the 401 and follow the 401 directions. If not, continue into the city and take the South Kingsway turnoff. Drive north to Bloor St. and turn right (east). Turn left (north) on Jane St. until you reach Dundas St. W. Turn left (west) on Dundas and the Legion is on your left.

Driving east or westbound on Hwy 401: Take the Black Creek Dr. turnoff and go southeast on Black Creek to Jane. Turn right onto Jane and follow it south to Dundas St. W. Turn right (west) on Dundas and the Legion is on your left.

Driving southbound on Hwy 400: Follow south into Black Creek Dr. and follow the above directions.

Incidentally, this is Canadian money, so it's only like 12-13 usd.

Dueling grounds moved to 2222 Dundas. I will try and get maps and better directions to this place (including confirmation from Wayne M.) in the next little while.

If I manage to go (50/50 now, trying to increase to 100/0), I will try to do so. It's sanctionned, so I'll just ask Wayne M. if he can provide me all the possible decklists, and I will try to pull some Phil-style ninja moves on the data.

I think Wu is afraid of me, Richard, Peter and Ray. I will be there with a new rogue creation. Last Vintage I was called out by a family emergency in round two after going 1-2 against Wu with Belcher - I want revenge.

No zap backs. let hom believe he's the better. Gotta get Ray to run him over with Parfait. That will teach him some respect. BTW, congrats on your second in the Friday GenCon. I've been toying with Crucible lock as well but I'm not ready to play it just yet. This deck is a comer built correctly. LMK if you have advice any advice and i'll share our list with you.

IMPORTANT

Sorry for the big red letters, but I screwed up apparently. 2222 Dundas is just a retail store... the tournament is STILL at the original location:

Still at the legion. Or at least Andrew Ooyen says so.

This tournament is shaping up to be pretty darn huge. Unlike last time, there will be no snowstorm in Toronto, so more can make it. And let's keep our eyes open for any shifty Montrealers that might try again to come here... Very Happy

Well, it was over. First was Duncan McGregor (RobRoy), with some sort of Fish or Landstill deck, and second was Rich Mattiuzzo (Shockwave), with Ub Control.

I will try to get the top 8 decklists later. It was rather weird top-8, with at least one more fish, a FCG, Crucible Control, and 3 more I can't recall.

SpecialK and I both went 4-2 (10 and 12 respectively). Peter went 3-2-1 (forgot what place).

This event should have been named:

Ontario Vintage Championships: the CoW wars

CoW is completely ridiculous. In my opinion, the people who don't think CoW is a problem really have no clue what they are talking about. This card is overly distortive and saps the fun out of this format.

At least mention that I was first after Swiss - I played a blue Mask deck that took the field by surprise. Second after Swiss was - gasp - Salvagers.
I lost to Richard in the top eight. However I beat the winner in Swiss as well as beating the FcG and drawing with the Salvagers. Andrew, ReAnimator here, played Crucible combo not crucible control and I drew with him in Swiss as well. He also made top eight. My record was 4-0-2. I lsot to Richard 2-1 due to a LoA that killed me game three.
As for Crucible, it was sick. Everyone and their Uncle played them - the fish deck that won played a couple.
Richard's deck is not really U/b control. It is Workshop control with Crucibles, etc. It has beaten twice now at tournaments and is arguably my worst match up despite a boatload of sideboard hate. He does not beat me with Crucibles - surprise - but rather it is who gets the Darksteel first when we play. We both go broken on each other with great counter wars.

The final listings

1st: Duncan McGregor - U/r Crucible Fish
2nd: Richard Mattiuzzo ( Shock Wave) - his Workshop build
3rd: Steven Brown (PatronVoidMage) - Old Faerie Men
4th: Gregory Darkeff - Food Chain Goblins
5th: Paul Shriar (bebe) - Mask / Dryad hybrid
6th: Matt Locke - Salvagers
7th: Andrew Oyen (ReAnimator) - CoW control/combo
8th: George Popescu - U/r Fish

Strangely, my deck auto wins against Fish, Tog and FCG. I never got to play Fish again in the finals alas.
