http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=8051Soooo sick. Not sure how you'd work them into your game play, but maybe you just keep your box of 3-D cards next to you at the table and put the right case into play at the right time. It's like proxies, but SO MUCH BETTER. --Knut

The 3-D Balance makes me sad. I hope nobody ever does that to a Black Lotus - it's sheer waste. Kinda reminded me of this. The Maro is hot, though; I can only imagine what he could have done with more time.

My god, those are hot. I think I've gotta stop off at the craft store after work and pick up an exacto knife and a cutting board. One day I'll make something that looks that tite.
EDIT: What do they put between layers to give depth? Those look thicker than 6~8 cards.

Those cards are utterly amazing. The time, effort, and creativity in that art blows my mind. I would really like to see them in real life. I have a high resolution monitor, and I'm sure it isn't doing them justice.

Unstablecornbread(Brent) and TheIneffable(BK) won the trivia contest and received his art as prizes. Just fantastic. I asked to buy some of his pieces. Unfortunate that he wasn't allowed to sell there as he could have sold his entire collection. He also had one piece made into a 3D life counter. As far as the Foil Balance I was under the impression a judge provided those and had a stack of them. Don't lose sleep over that. Those things were trading for cheap there. They've come down a lot.

OMG that's a really limited print run of Baby Flores. I wonder what the foil version looks like? Ted, how can I get my own???
Imagine cutting up six Baby Flores to make a 3-D one!

Imagine cutting up six Baby Flores to make a 3-D one! They did that already. Then they added batteries. The thing actually MOVES. I was at Worlds and saw the 3-D cards. Truly beautiful stuff. The pictures really don't do justice to the level of care and detail that went into the work. dave.

Wizards provided him with all of the cards for these, and sponsored him coming over from Japan. He doesn't speak English, so they also provided a translator too.
The Balance was OK, but there was a DCI Foil City of Brass that was better, and the best card I saw was probably a DCI Foil Living Death (so many layers and details - badass!). The one pictured is not the Foil one he did, by the way.

I'd have to say that the DCI City of Brass was the coolest of the lot.
Also, just in case people don't know, you can NOT play with these cards. They're roughly 1/2 inch thick and kept in a plastic box.
Still, though, they're quite excellent.

That IS the Living Death he was working on, but the top layer of the card is the only one that is foiled. He learned his lesson after doing the Balance, because foils crease instead of bend, and from there foreward asked for regular cards with only one foil for the final layer. This picture is actually slightly better than the final product picture, so that's why I used it.
Also, Wizards did NOT provide all the cards for these. The DCI cards were provided, but the others were coughed up by the people who wanted them done. Aaron Forsythe got Sylvan Scrying made, and Paul Sottosanti will have to wait until his next trip to Nagoya in January to pick up his Pristine Angel.

--Knut Okay, now THATS a good choice! Pristine Angel will look awesome. If you guys would hand Ookubo any one card that he would tinker with, what would it be? My choice would probably end up be Psychatog, 'cause we love each other so much

If I were to get one made it would definately have to be some kind of Ron Spencer art, possibly Bedlam.

What's amusing is an old friend of mine used to make these with Overpower cards. He did an incredible job with them, but they usually sold for kinda cheap though because well..... Overpower is a dead game now.
He asked me once if anyone in the Magic community would be interested in these with Magic cards. I told him I doubted it because you wouldn't be able to play with them. So of course he never made one.
He had a heart attack recently and is stuck at home and can't work now. I bet he would be real interested to know people really are interested in them. He did a much better job than these, though he took an ungodly amount of time to make even one.

AEG has had artists making these for years as prize support for their L5R Koteis. They aren't difficult to make, just incredibly time consuming. The "art" is in bending the cards to achieve a more realistic sense of depth.
I'm surprised you guys have never seen these before, they've been in the ccg industry for awhile now. You can find several artists who will do them for you at Gencon. I'm sure I can track down their names for you if your interested.
Damn, that Maro is sexy.
