Since we have a thread about the crap of the film industry I thought it might be nice if a few people chimed in a listed some good titles that they thought would be trash...
I'll start off by taking a few seconds to go over some movies I liked, and mind you that's sort of a broad scope:
The Human Stain - This movie was a lot better then I expected. I got reeled into it by my better half and thought it would likely be some sort of 'chick-flick', but to my surprize it was a damn good story in there. Not a common or odinary story in any way shape or form, to say the least. Now it certainly didn't have any action to speak of, but it wasn't all touchy feely and lovey-dovey either, and it was generally entertaining.
Resident Evil 2 - This is what action movies are supposed to be like. Well, OK, Big Trouble in Little China is what action movies are supposed to be like, but this is pretty damn close. After the first movie, which many people hated, I wasn't expecting much; but, it seems I was wrong because after watching it last night it was pretty damn good. It had a solid mix of action and just enough plot to keep things moving along. Speaking of moving along, it did a great job at that, and I can't recall any moments, no matter how brief, where things were dragging along waiting for another explosion.
And one of my older favorites:
The Long Kiss Goodnight - Gina Davis as a spy/assasin? Samuel Jackson as a run-down old bugger bent on uncovering layer upon layer of lies? It doesn't really sound right at first, but this movie is still one of my favorites in any genre because it doesn't apologize for anything. It doesn't try to be different or flashy or special, it just has some great one-liners and some pretty good Jackson-style scenes spread throughout the film. If you've never seen or heard of it then check it out.
And speaking of one-liners:
The Last Boyscout - This is one of those films that pretty much make fun of itself and the whole action movie scene, with a guy thats training another PI wannabe, so to speak. I loved it because it's really hard to find a movie just packed with so many one-liners that does so shamelessly. Bruce Willis was really good back in this type of film, and Daman Wayans was pretty damn funny, too.
Anyway, just a few films that popped into my mind as something most people don't give a second look to. If you're bored some time you might want to check a few of them out.

For some reason, I usually end up enjoying a lot of comedies and teen movies that looked totally retarded but ended up being really funny (to me anyway), like Super Troopers and Bring it On.

Super Troopers was funny as hell. I never heard of any of those guys, and passed over it a lot, but I got talked into it one day and laughed my ass off. Good one! That's a perfect example I think.

Seriously, who though when you went to go see Office Space that it was going to be the cult movie that it is? It typifies work in so many ways. One of my top movies.

Best in Show was pretty damn good. -lol- Office Space was too, but yea it did get sort of a 'cult' following in it... Best in Show though was one of those movies I never heard of and only watched because it came on one of my premium channels. Obviously it was quite funny.

The Whole Nine Yards. I don't know why I watched it in the first place, but it turned out to be one of the funniest movies I'd ever seen. The first time I watched it I was laughing the entire way through.

I remember watching the previews for Boogie Nights. It looked like a movie about the 70's and some parties and a disco. I had no idea it was a movie about porn.
When I went into the theatre with my friends we picked Boogie Nights because we were mostly bored. The movie starts, it's about a guy with a huge schlong trying to make it big into porn. I remember looking at my friend and saying "holy shit, it's a movie about porn!". Then Heather Grahm's character went down on Marky Mark in the closet (maybe 15min into the movie) and half of the theatre walked out. My friends and I clapped loudly when Heather Grahm got naked five minutes later. Dominant.
Boogie Nights was a well kept secret of a movie. I had no idea what to expect there was no real "buzz" about it, but it just rocked!

28 Days Later--This is one of the coolest horror movies I have seen in a long time. The especially eerie Ave Maria in the Tunnel scene is impressive.
Sexy Beast--Another Brit flick, but this is a ganster movie of the highest caliber. The entire film is taut, dangerous, and sharp like a rusty sawblade. The dialouge needs subtitles because of the thick accent, but Ben Kingsley is ferocious. He is un-fucking-believable. Look for the post shotgun to the gut speech.
Moulin Rouge--Go ahead...call me a fucking girl...this movie is the most creative American movie in years. The Roxanne montage is one of my favorites. Not quite Godfather good...but few things are.
The Matrix--I know that people only remember the flashy, craptacular sequels, but if you pretend that they did not happen the original was really pretty good. Who knew that a Keanu Reeves movie could be good? I did not even bother to see it in the movies. I saw it on DVD then I went and saw it in the theaters as a rerelease.

All Paul Thomas Anderson movies are like that. Go watch Magnolia, that one's pretty good too. Tom Cruise's character is especially awesome.

Definitely 'Il Postino'
A couple of years ago (even though at this point it feels like it was about a hundred) I was so much into movies that I wanted to see every last Academy-nominated film before the actual Oscar ceremony. Now, living in the Netherlands (where movies tend to come out shortly after most of said movie's line-up need incontience pads) this can be tricky, so it meant I had to travel to obscure cinemas all over the continent* to catch them all.
The ONE movie I did NOT want to see was 'Il Postino', a two-hour-plus Italian romantic drama about a semi-retarded postman who meets an exiled poet (aaaaaargh!). I went anyway, because I didn't want a gaping hole in my Oscar-resume (and partially because the chick behind that particular arthouse cinema's counter was really hot**). It turned out to be one of the most moving feats of cinematography I ever had the fortune of witnessing. Beautiful acting by Pablo Neruda, engrossing scenery and truly astonishing music by Luis Bacalov (whom you may or may not have seen on the Kill Bill 2 credits). I can't guarantee you'll like it (this is one of those movies that cater to certain personalities, I guess) but I do still urge everyone to go see it. I expected this to be an F+ and it turned out to be an A-.
*= OK, so maybe just across Holland then. **= and I'm talking REALLY hot here.
