My exhaustive search for a viable budget vintage deck seems to lead me down a different path every time I look at my pile of cards. Here's the flavour of the week.
Dudes(17): 4 x Savannah Lion 4 x Grim Lavamancer 4 x Goblin Vandal 2 x Exalted Angel 3 x Mogg Flunkie
Burn/Removal(16): 4 x Lightning Bolt 4 x Fire/Ice 4 x Cursed Scroll 4 x Swords to Plowshares
Sexyness(4): 3 x Blood Moon 1 x Black Vise
Mana(23): 1 x Mox Ruby 1 x Mox Pearl 1 x Mox Diamond 1 x Lotus Petal 3 x Plateau 2 x Windswept Heath 2 x Flooded Strand 6 x Mountain 6 x Plains
SB:
3 Null Rod 3 Pillars 3 REB 3 Incinerate 3 Tormod's Crypt
There hasn't been a great deal of testing done with this decklist yet but, superficially, at least, it seems decent to me- or at least the general idea of it does.
On the lack of strips: I'd rather just attempt to rely on a quick blood moon than worry about the strips/crucible. Although blood moon is less than it once was, it's still sexy.
On the inclusion of scrolls: They may not be as popular as they once were, but they're still hot stuff. In the past two tourneys I've attended I haven't seen a single null rod on the opposite end of the table.
Swords: Mostly included for fear of big fat oathed creatures, but also useful against random artifact fat and aggro, not to mention the infamous welder.
Lavamancers and Lions: These are pretty obvious, really. I'm pretty much obligated to include them without much thought.
Mogg Flunkies: This was one of the toughest choices in making the preliminary deck list. I really won't be able to say for sure, until I've tested extensively, whether or not these dudes deserve three spots, but I won't deny it- I'm a mogg flunky fan.
Exalted Angel: *shrug* - She's hot and she kicks ass for a reasonable cost- why not?
Vandals: Another tough choice. While I enjoy dealing damage with my shamans, they normally only manage to poke in a few points anyway, and their utility is pretty much limited to eating mana accelerants and maybe the occasional chalice or zuran orb. Vandals are slower because their ability is affected by summoning sickness, but they can halt a titan and eat an early, and otherwise fatal, trinisphere. I'm still not completely settled on this one, myself...
Black Vise: Random, but sexy.
The Burn: I think my choice was pretty standard, really. I mean, I could have chosen chains or incinerates over F/I, but I seldom need the whole three damage that those two have to offer and chains have bad synergy with blood moon.
Ok, now it's your turn. I'd really like to bring some form of this deck to a tourney later this month, so this is your chance to scream at me for playing a terrible deck... or just gimme a hand. Thanks
