When you have Richard Garfield PhD in play, and you choose to use a Whispers of the Muse as an Ancestral Recall, can you use an Ancestral Recall as itself? Likewise, could this ruling be extended to apply more generally?

This question came up discussing this card in type 4 on IRC, so I wanted to ask one of our judges their expert opinions on this matter.

it does say "you may".

I like it, it's real good for us mental magic kids.

I would like to also mention this is the first time a card has been released that's name is an anagram of an earlier card. (Richard Garfield does not exist in real life. He is a made-up spectre)

Technically, Phelddagrif is an anagram for Garfield PhD. It doesn't have the Richard in it at all...unless you are talking about a different card.

Please refrain from asking Unhinged questions until the Unhinged FAQ comes out, and save Jebus some mental strife.

I don't believe that playing a card as another card will prevent you from playing the actual card itself.

However, a FAQ will be available soon.  I won't be posting it here, since I really don't want to encourage Unhinged questions. :/

I believe we've had a few before, like forest and foster.

Pi: good call! There's bound to be more.

I wonder if they'll ever make Randy Buehler an anagram card. I can honestly say I'm looking forward to:
- Durable Henry
- Nearby Hurdle
- Enabled Hurry
- Unheard Beryl
- Burned Harley
- Hay Blunderer
- Blurred Hyena (this is BOUND to appear as a new Blurred Mongoose eventually)

Also, some of you might be interested in knowing that Randy is in fact not a human; he's a genetically engineered construct hell-bent on destroying the vintage format. His name is a obviosu anagram for 'Hadley Burner'.

Other possible MTG celebrety cards could include:

Mike Flores :
- Irksome Elf
- Rifle Smoke (hella cool!)

Adrian Sullivan:
- Ruanda Villains

Jay Moldenhauer-Salazar
- Hazardously Ajar Enamel
- Jealous Dharma Analyzer

Aaron Forsythe:
- Honorary Feast
- Hoary Seafront (I can actually see both of these see print)

Nate Heiss:
- Ashen Ties

Mark Rosewater:
- Armor Tweakers
- Artwork Seamer
- Serra Teamwork

IMO, not like it matters, But because RGPHD says you can rename a card but can only rename it once. So if you rename whispers, and then draw ancestral, your using ancestral as itself your not using RGPHDs power. SO your not naming a card twice for RGPHD, your jsut playing a spell regardless of him.

Hi,

I'm pretty sure I've read something about this quite a while ago on wizards' site, I believe there were at least a couple more. Forest/foster was the easiest to remember, but if I remember correctly acid rain was also in that list, as well as 2 others. Maybe someone is able to dig up this old article? I have looked for it, but my time is rather limited so I wasn't able to search very hard.

bye

Since this isn't really going anywhere rules related, time to close.
