Chupacabra Elder {R} Creature -- Imp Shaman 3/2 Creatures you control get +1/+0 for each poison counter you have. Servants of Horzatl, the chupacabra seeth at the treacherous ways of Quiacatl's followers.*** RVS adopted the name "Chupacabra Nest" for his hasted land and I thought it was too cool an idea to waste. I think there's some small precedent for the human component of Horzatl's followers to be (red/white)-gold creatures. I think it would be interesting then to represent at least two other species that are faithful to Horzatl as mono-coloured creatures, such as the two Chupacabra I've suggested. They don't need to be a huge part of the theme, but having four or five Chupacabra cards would be pretty cool.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

I totally agree with the use of Chupacabras, but I just have a slight issue with the creature types; Imp is fine, but having the type Shaman suggests that they are somewhat organized and sophisticated, whereas I see them as being extremely feral and bestial.
Otherwise, s'alright.

I thought Chupacabra was the name for man-sized chickenlike creatures. So shouldn't they be birds? Maybe bird spirits?

El Chupacabra (Goat Sucker)While the closest thing to an actual creature is a wingless chicken, since we are dealing with a fantasy setting, the closest thing is more Imp like.

I want them to seem somewhat sophisticated and organized. In fact, although I don't want them to dominate the set, like goblins do in other sets, I want them to be goblinoid creature for this set. Goblins get too much glory, besides which they've got a bad reputation as being stupid in addition to being impulsive and chaotic. I want to establish the chupacabra as being impulsive and chaotic, but also clever, devious, and spiteful (probably closer to the Akki or the Kyren than other tribes of goblins)

(probably closer to the Akki or the Kyren than other tribes of goblins) According to the oooooold magic short stories, that was true of the rundveldt (sp?) goblins too.

Okay -- so they're not tremendously dissimilar from goblins in their behaviour, but I'd definitely like to avoid the Goblin creature type. I'm very ticked off that all of the other colours got their creature types shaken up in Champions of Kamigawa, but red continued to get goblins (although I can't complain about the glut of spirits.) Although imps are traditionally black, I'm pretty sure that it's the most appropriate creature type to describe the chupacabra.
