When playing a creature from aether vial, is the creature being played counterable?

No, you're not playing a spell.  You're activating an artifact's activated ability.  It is similar to using Joblin Charbelcher to do damage to something, or Phyrexian Furnace to remove a card from a graveyard.

That said, don't forget that there are cards (such as Stifle) that can counter the activated ability of the Aether Vial.
