Recently singers of big name musical groups have decided for whatever reasons to start a side project. The best known is probably Maynard from Tool starting A Perfect Circle. I really like this trend and wanted to know if anyone has a favorite side-project band. I also would like to hear thoughts on the idea of side projects. Do you think the singers are just money hungry? Or is the artist just expressing a side of him/her self that would not be in the style of the original group?
For my part in this my favorite singer is Mike Patton. He has multiple bands he has been in or is currently in. The most notable being Faith No More with more recent groups including among others, Tomahawk and Fantomas. Each band he is in is radically different than the others. Unlike other singers who start side groups none of his bands sound like eachother, which is why I have trouble picking one band as my favorite.
Well I'd love to hear thoughts on this subject from you music-loving TMDers.

I like Foo Fighters and Megadeth, but I don't know if those really count as "side-projects."

I saw Tomahawk open for Tool, they were terrible. The group has been known to play off key just to piss an audience off. Also the venue may have had bad sound equipment. Tomahawk is a band I really like but you have to be open to different music to appreciate them.

I can confirm this. Mike Patton really has a habit of trying to make people hate him for some reason. There was this scam in a Mr. Bungle CD to send in $2 for lyrics to some song with a made up language. To the best of my knowledge, Mike never sent them out. Anyway, the side project trend isn't really that new. I think we're finally seeing some good ones.

Jack 'Choke' Kelly is the lead singer for my favorite all-time band, a Boston hardcore formation known as 'Slapshot'. His sideproject (same singer, same drummer) is called 'Stars And Stripes' has such song titles as 'Shaved For Battle', 'American Oi', and 'Proud, Strong and Free'. Suffice to say, I like Slaphot better than Stars And Stripes o.O This is by no means a new trend, by the way. Stars & Stripes have existed for ages, and I've also always likes Temple Of The Dog, Chris Cornell's Soundgarder / Pearl Jam side project from '91. Though I realise a lot of people on these boards were like two years old then Also, in the ninetees, I used to be a great fan of The Breeders, who were basically Throwing Muses and The Pixies. My girlfriend is rather taken with Stonesour, which is a Slipknot sideproject, apparently.

While forming a side-project may not be "new" it seems to be happening more and more in the music world recently. I'm a huge fan of A Perfect Circle as well. They sound similar to Tool but with a more varied range of music styles. I like Stonesour as well but the latest Slipknot album could've been a Stonesour cd. If a singer or whoever does a side project I believe he should try to keep in different than his orginal group.
Rap groups even like to form alternate groups to express more than the normal hip-hop influences. N.E.R.D. is a group fronted by hip hop producer and rapper Pharrell. The group has rock influences that sound much different than Pharrell's other music.

Their songs just sucked out loud, although he did make a Charles Whitman joke which was funny. Also, the "open to different music" argument is just bullshit that everyone uses to try and explain why people don't like the bands they like. I enjoy many different kinds of music, and I open-mindedly gave Tomahawk their fair shot, and they did not pass my personal taste test. Why is that a problem? On topic: Gorillaz/Blur.

I heard that people actually left the Syracuse, NY Tomahawk/Tool show because of Patton harrasing Tool fans, because, they were boo'ing Tomahawk. Which is rightfully deserverd, Mr_Rogers has played Tomahawk for me before... aweful.

Tomahawk also threatened to keep playing till everyone in the audience walked out at that show . On a side the Gorilaz/blur thing is very cool, I totally agree with Matt there.

For me: Blind Guardian/Demons and Wizards with Hansi Kursch At the Gates/Nightrage with Thomas Lindberg Persuader/Savage Circus with Jens Karlsson Cannibal Corpse/Paths of Possession with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher
Mostly metal for me. I'm sure there are others I just don't think about right now.

Mike Patton has also done a solo album featuring operatic like songs in Italian. Its pretty cool as i once heard it at a local record store(yea actual records). he is the coolest guy ever, and maybe the one of the strangest.

I kinda like Kyle Gass from Tenacious D's side project, Trainwreck. They're kind of like a new interpretation of southern rock like C,S,&N or Creedence Clearwater Revival. Check them out if you haven't heard any of their stuff.

Guardian's list is awesome.
Arjen Anthony Lucassen does a bunch of projects with vocalists from all kinds of different bands. Probably his most well known group is Ayreon, but he has several others. On the latest Ayreon album "The Human Equation" you have the following singers:
James Labrie from Dream Theater Devin Townsend from Strapping Young Lad, The Devin Townsend Band, and several others Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth Devon Graves from Dead Soul Tribe
and a bunch more. One girl who sang on the album Marcella Bovio also sings for Arjen's newest project - Stream of Passion.
Anyway, Arjen is about the greatest musical genius alive right now that no one knows about.

speaking of dream theater... there is a band called liquid tension experiment conisting of mike portnoy, john petrucci, jordan rudess... and tony levin who was big in prog rock in the 70's. im not sure but possibly king crimson. awesome band and since there is no singer only music, no distractions. i was reading in metal edge and mike portnoy stated he currently does 4 side projects, and thus has no free time. i have a feeling we could go on forever, thinking of someone new.

I just hear that Maynard of Tool and Trent Reznor of NIN are forming a side project together. I hope this is true, that would be amazing to hear.

I appologize in advance for my over the top anger/arrogance. Everyone takes their music so seriously, I feel I must try and one up them. It is entirely in jest. I feel that is the only way to talk about music. If you don't like my music, it's cause you don't get it.....cause you're retarded. Blind Guardian/Demons & Wizards You must be mistaken. You clearly mean Iced Earth/Demons & Wizards. Unless you're retarded, in which case, my appologies. ICED EARTH>blind guardian I just hear that Maynard of Tool and Trent Reznor of NIN are forming a side project together. I hope this is true, that would be amazing to hear. I read that they felt the project was not greater than the sum of it's parts, and not really worth releasing. Neither seem they type to release something they can't be proud of. And the only acceptable answer to the question is GWAR/X-COPS http://xcops-lyrics.wonderlyrics.com/

GWAR/X-COPS Is there a site where I can sample there songs? I've read some od the lyrics and they seem great. The only acceptable answer to my question is anything Mike Patton. He a musical god. http://www.lyricsdir.com/search/?q=tomahawk

John Zorn projects: Masada Painkiller Naked City Dekoboko Hajime (sort of) and various colloborations with about a million different people, including Mike Patton. I know the question asked for singers, but lyrics are for suckers.

Heavy metal is a network of sorts. Every band from a certain has a connection other bands somehow.
For example:
Opeth-Bloodbath-Nightingale-Diabolical Masquerade-Katatonia-October Tide-Edge of Sanity-Pan Thy Monium
All bands are linked through various members played in each others bands at some point.
