I've been going through a bit of an identity crisis lately, so I figured a good way to help figure out where I'm going in life would be to examine where I've come from. So I ran a search on myself on this here internet and found this little gem: http://www.type-one.net/node/3I'll tell you what, it was a breath of fresh air mixed with a stiff breeze of nostalgia to find these old tournament reports that range all the way from May of '96 to March of '03. As an aside, I got a kick out of reading a few of my own first reports playing Parfait on there (I'm FAMOUS!!). After reading some of them, in order from '96 to '03, you can really see how the game and mentaility behind it have changed over the past few years. One of my favorites is Josh Alvarez's Worlds 2001 report where he took Pox into a field of 4 FoF Mono-Blue and lived the dream of smashing the best deck in the format with...well...Pox. There are also a bunch of reports from prominent TMD members butting heads with eachother at the first TMDC in Syracuse. Those are pure gold. It's about the closest you're going to get to a real-life ToC. I figured it might be educational to all of the youngbloods on here to read, since you can't truly appreciate the game and community without having an idea of where and how it started out. That, and they're just some fun reads. Enjoy! |

me getting trounced by grand inquisitor at my second proxy vintage tourney
Round 4: Tyler, playing RBW Rector
Tyler was a Concord local, the first besides Zherbus I've met. Nice guy, but his
deck was rather unorthodox. Game 1 I counter his only threat (rector) and drop
Future Sight. I'm not sure, but trade routes probably accelerated the win by a
few turns. I don't really know what he's playing, but I'm guessing bargain into
some enchantment based win condition. Game 2 he drops an early Rector, I Force
it, he REB's, I tremble. He starts swinging with the Rector and I feel better
about myself (Your Mother can handle a 20 turn clock). Eventually he tutors for
something and I don't have a counter. He drops...words of war? I'm relieved that
I at least have one more turn before he gets bargain. I draw a burning wish and
vindicate the enchantment. If he had gotten something to kill the rector the
same turn it would have been lights out. Tyler expresses his dislike of the
color blue in magic, and I grin, knowing blue-based decks is all I ever play.
3-0-1, 6-2-1
that really brings back memories, also that thead has a ton of great quotes in it like one of zherb's report's "out goes counterspell in goes Teferi's response"

EDIT: not too bad only took me 3 years and 4 months to T8 one of these silly tourneys

I don't know who remembers BD much, but there used to be these Type 1 Tournaments of Champions... there weren't many, I think there were 4 or 5 all in all, but something like 32 people would sign up and we'd play matches over apprentice. Somehow I kept all the decklists from the 2nd such tournament, known as T1TOC2... JP Meyer played. Smmenen played. K-Run played. Koen played. I played (obviously), and many others. I'm posting 30 such decklists. Nevyn's and Meridian's were lost in the sands of time. This was around the time of Invasion pre Fact or Fiction and Gush restrictions when MonoBlue ruled the day.
I seem to remember making the top 8, beating DerangedParrot in the top 8 and losing to Acolytec in the top 4, but I can't remember who won the tournament. So here goes...

Game 2: Side in Masticores and Contagion (for his River Boas). Those were the days. I tricked two people wih Edict that tournament. He has a Mogg Fanatic on the table, plays a Ball Lightning and attacks. I respond by playing my Edict, which was a bit of a bluff that paid off nicely. He responed by sacrificing his Fanatic for one damage to the head. o.O By turn three, he attacked me with a Fog of Gnats. He just assumed, since I had no blockers, I wasn't going to do anything, so he gloatingly announced: 'Sorry, you're dead!', tapped a swamp, went Ritual - Ritual - Hatred for 19. I play Edict. Dozer - it's not just us that got better. Thankfully, our opponents improved a lot, too  |

To actually see a deck i played so long ago gives me a good and warm feeling. This was the time i was still only playing homebrews that had no outs after being locked down. So long ago hehe. TnT, zomies hehe nice times nice times. There were 9 of us: 4 with Keeper, 3 with Parfait, 1 Void and Marco, who always
plays a rogue deck, and today was nothing different. This i actually loved, as it was true at the time. I always played something different. The black and white i played against Rudy was actually the same deck i used to win a beta timetwister later that year. So that was the time i actually was getting better. The nice things about these old reports is you actually see some cards long forgotten. Perhaps i will think about those cards in a deck again sometime. |

Wow, this is a great collection. I LOVE the old GAT reports, as well as the old Team Hadley members in all of their sarcastic bastard-like glory. kl0wn hit the nail on the head: I figured it might be educational to all of the youngbloods on here to read, since you can't truly appreciate the game and community without having an idea of where and how it started out. , so new-folk, read up! |
