Hi all, I'm new to this forum, but from everything I've read so far, this seems like a good place to ask for some advice. I've had this deck since the days of yore when underworld dreams was restricted and black vise was not (oh how i miss those days), and I've been trying to keep the deck as flexible as possible over the years, but the loss of 3 vises just plain makes it less potent and I've had to make it a more defensive deck. I am reasonably happy with it at this point, but I know it could be a tighter deck. It's for casual play, and I want it to be a 60-card deck, no sideboard, that can stand against any kind of deck it may come across - control, beatdown, LD, whatever. Also, I neither own, nor can afford moxen, lotus, AR, etc. So let me know your thoughts, and please, don't laugh at me for trying to keep this monstrosity alive.

So, without further ado:

The Squisher

Artifacts -

1 x Black Vise
1 x Grim Monolith
! x Mana Vault
1 x Gilded Lotus
1 X Sol Ring
2 x Fellwar Stone
4 x Chalice of the Void
4 x Howling Mine

Enchantments -

1 X Yawgmoth's Bargain
1 x Humility
1 x Stormbind
1 x Stasis
1 x Nether Void
1 x Solitary Confinement
1 x Arcane Laboratory
4 x Underworld Dreams

Instants/Sorceries -

1 x Vampiric Tutor
1 x Demonic Tutor
1 x Diabolic Tutor
1 x Balance
1 X Tinker
1 x Gerrard's Wisdom
1 x Replenish
1 x Wheel of Fortune
1 x Diminishing Returns
1 x Braingeyser
1 x Prosperity
4 x Stormseeker

Lands -

4 x Glimmervoid
3 x City of Brass
1 x Strip Mine
1 x Tolarian Academy
2 x Badlands
2 x Bayou
3 x Scrubland
3 x Underground Sea

The general idea is to drop a Chalice ASAP to hide behind while I can drop a Dreams and then Stormseeker over the Chalice until I draw (or tutor up via diabolic tutor) one of the Draw 7s or the X-draw spells.

Thanks everyone!

I personally don't like all of the 1 of enchantments.  I know you can tutor or get them through a Draw 7 but you only have 5 of those combined.

One of the enchantments I would take out is Stormbind because making yourself discard at random is never a very good thing and when you decide to inflict it upon your self intentionally its just sad.

I also don't like Stasis in here, Stasis is not just a card you can throw in any deck and play it, the deck needs to be built around it because of its uniqueness and power.

I also question why is there no Academy Rectors?  Academy Rectors seem like a perfect card for this deck since your focusing on getting Underworld Dreams out and with the Rectors you can choose what enchantment to get.

You might want to try Sudden Impact instead of Storm Seeker, it's the same card but you already have 1 red card and no green so it wouldn't hurt your manabase.

Replenish seems subpar in this deck, from what I see it is just to get back any enchantment that gets destroyed or countered.  Replenish is like Stasis, decks are built around the card, throwing it into any deck is rarely justified.  Regrowth could be used here instead I think.

Howling mine may seem great, but it is almost always a card that hurts you.  You are giving your opponent the same benefit that you receive: one extra card each turn.  The kicker: your opponent is the first one to benefit from the card, putting you at a card disadvantage.

You've got some black already in there, so maybe Phyrexian Arena or Dark Confidant would suit the deck better in providing more draw.  With both of these, you, not your opponent, are the only only one drawing extra cards.  Of course with the Dark Confidants, you'll probably want to swap the Yawmoth's Bargains (and any other high cc elements) for something else - maybe Skeletal Scryings.

-1 Diminishing Returns
+1 Memory Jar

You run tinker, Diminishing Returns is one of the worst Draw7s, and Memory Jar is colorless.  Easy switch.

Why Arcane Lab? this would be X times better as fastbond.  Allows quicker kills as well.

Penguin - the 1 of's were the most recent addition to the deck, including Stasis, which I have to admit, I find pretty useless. Replenish went in there with the Enchantments because it seemed to make sense and I'm happy with it so far, but I'm thinking of pulling the enchantments for what the originally replaced, which was a Stroke of Genius, a couple more Prosperity, a Windfall and a couple Armageddons and a Wrath.

I don't have any Rectors in there for two reasons. First, I don't own any. Second, I want to keep the deck creatureless. And as for the Sudden Impact, again, I don't own any and my vanity won't allow me to pull out my Legends Storm Seekers  Smile

Hazard - I don't need to draw any more cards, I draw plenty as it is. In strictest truth, Yawgmoth's Bargain is a win condition only because I can draw a ton of cards and then sac them to Stormbind. Howling Mine lets me get closer to that lethal Storm Seeker a little more quickly and with Nether Void or Chalice of the Void in play, it pretty much limits what advantage my opponent has by drawing the extra cards.

I have to admit, I really like Stormbind in this deck. I don't have to use it if i don't want to, but it's there in a pinch and anything that goes to the graveyard is not something that I can't replace with something else in the deck (except when its Balance or something similarly broken). Also, it turns this deck into a prison deck with a win condition when i drop a Chalice set for something ridiculous, like 8 or 10. No one can cast anything, we're both drawing lots of cards due to Howling Mine and I can actually do something about it.

Having said that, I think I'm definitely going to go back to the deck I had a few months ago, although there is a card in Guildpact that made me wet my pants when I saw it.

Cererbal Vortex - 1UR

Target player draws two cards, then
Cerebral Vortex deals damage to that
player equal to the number of cards
he or she has drawn this turn.

That's just plain evil with a Wheel, which in totally feasible by turn 3 with the right acceleration.  Very Happy

Diminishing Returns is there for its casting cost - 2UU

I toyed with Memory Jar, but I wasn't really impressed with it when i did get a chance to play it, though I think most of the times that it dropped, I had already won and it was the killswitch.

Fastbond is something I honestly hadn't thought of and it sounds interesting, although I am currently only running 19 lands, so I'm not sure how much I'll get out of it.
