What a cool tourney, in several ways...

Not only was it savage because it was a fun tournament run by players for players, but because it was a much needed change up in the meta...like a breath of fresh air if you will. This was not the normal california Oath/Stax (with a touch of drain decks) but instead was a general mish-mash of baddass decks that I think took everyone by suprise! Mad props to the local players for looking outside the box this time.

24 players show up this time to compete for a Bazaar of Baghdad and a crap load of free electronics and some duals and stuff. We had 5 rounds with cut to top 8

Top 8 is

Sensei Sensei - John Wiley
Shop Aggro - Robert Bechtol
5cStax - Michael Painter
Smmenen Blue - Zac Carlow
T1T - Jeff Huang
2 Land Belcher - Kevin Shoemaker
Shop Aggro (Gilded Claw) - Jeff Neilson
eBA - Luis Scott-Vargas

Top 8 played out like

Sensei vs Shop Aggro, shop wins
5cStax vs Mono U, Mono U wins
T1T vs 2 Land Belcher, T1T wins
Gilded Claw vs eBA, Gilded Claw wins

Top 4

Mono U, vs Shop Aggro, Mono U wins
T1T vs Gilded Claw, T1T wins

Final

Mono U wins in an amazing hour and fourty five minute 3 game match!

Congrats to Zac Carlow from So. Lake Tahoe for taking the big win!

Overall meta breakdown includes the above top 8 decks and:

UB Fish
2 Land Belcher
5c Bazaar Stax (no uba)
UW Fish
T1 Zoo
Grim Long
UW Fish
GAT
Gifts Flame/Vault
Gifts Flame/Vault
Affinity
Gifts
Control Oath (w/ Muddle and intuitions and stuff)
Oath
Doomsday
Bazaar Madness

We had to cancel the Soul Caliber 2 tourney, as we had to give the TV back when the office closed this time...gave out the prize anyways though!!!

Luis Scott-Vargas (lsv) won the Members only raffle for the Robo Pet, and Kevin Schambers won the Open raffle for the nice headphones! Enjoy guys!

Kick ass location for a kick ass format! Really this was the first event I've ever attended and I was somewhat pleased with my decks performance, allthough going 4-1-1 in matches left me wishing my only loss came in the 5 rounds of swiss.
Thanks again I'll keep my eyes open for any locale events in the future and hopefully put that Sensei Sensei deck in the Top4 next time, instead of finishing 5th or w/e.
John

Mad props to all who played and/or came! You guys rock!

You dont even know how relieved I was to see this meta...our last event with the same number of people had 8 Oath decks, 6 Stax decks, 2 Dragon decks and like 1 each of some other stuff that has been pretty common as of late (like 1 gifts, 1 CS etc)...

To have this tournament be completely different was SO welcome IMO.

Major props for everybody for deciding to drop Oath/Stax at least down to a more appropriate level, heh.

The mono U control build looked almost exactly like Smemmen Blue control from a while back, with MD back 2 basics and chalice of the void

I played Dan Carp's The Gilded Claw with the side board of "Duplicant, Triskellion, 4 Sphere of Resistance and 9 nominally appropriate meta choice cards" in my second outing of Not Playing Salvagers.

Actually, looking at the top 8 and total meta, I should have played Salvagers.  Fewer Chalice/Null Rods than usual.

Anyways...on to the report

Round 1: vs Jeff Huang with UBr TPS with Intuition/AK/Wish/Tinker

Game 1 I kill him with beats before anything else can go down.

Game 2 I conceed while we are both at 20 life, he has 9 cards in hand, and I have nothing relevant in play.  Only 10 minutes or so left in round.  I figure game 3 I can go first, maybe I can beat him out.  Upon retrospect, maybe I should have played it out, and if he wins, so be it....game 3 may or may not end. you know?  TMD! What do you think? Play out game 2 and possibly draw game 3 or conceed game 2 to hopefully win game 3?

Game 3: I think I have him sufficiently slowed down.  I have Jesters Cap in play (Darksteel Ingot and Shop as only mana sources) and I topdeck Defense Grid from the board.  Weak, I know, but who knows.

My opponent Brainstorms or is holding Tendrils Will and/or Demonic Tutor. I lose to maindedeck Chain of Vapor/Rebuild and wish for one of above...

Lost first game.  Sucks.

Round 2: Paired up against Austin Martinez of Team Vacaville (My team for those keeping score) playing Duress Oath.

Game 1: Austin wins flip and ends my awesome hand with Lotus, Duress, Duress, Orchard, Oath, Go. I enter scoop phase for second time today.

Game 2 and 3: 11 cards come in from board.  I destroy him utterly both games. I decided that since I own 1 Aura Fracture, I may as well play it.  The only artifact Hate cards I hate are enchantments, and I play 4 Crucibles, and it hates on Oath of Druids.  Nice, eh?

Round 3: Erik Brown with Gifts.Confidant.pwn.dec

My deck crushes his.  Playskill has nothing to do with it. Crucible resolves turn 1, strip turn 2, sphere, Trinisphere, whatever.
Same with game two. 11 cards come in from board.  Sorry man.

Round 4: Some guy with an oath deck.

I win both rounds from BorkEnNess. Game 2,11 cards come in from board and he kept a Chalice for Zero, No land No Mox hand.  His fault. sigh.

Round 5: ID with Kevin Schumaker playing Belcher x4/Tendrilsx2.dec

Top 8: Louis Scott Vargas with EBA/Confidant.

My deck crushes his due to 1st turn Chalice for 2 both game.  Game 2 7 or so cards come in from the board. he mulled to 5 to face chalice for 2 first turn. Sorry man.

So far,the two opponents I faced and feared (because I knew them and their playskill), my deck randomly dealt me a win.  Wheee!

Top 4: Jeff Huang again with UBR TPS/Wish/Tinker

I die both games.

Game 2, however was interesting. 11 cards come in from board. I resolved a Jester's Cap FINALLY (after first two got forced or Rack N Ruin'ed) and took out Colossus, Tendrils and (loooking looking looking....Will? Wish x2? I pick Wish since Mana Drain was in his hand (I counted Forces and Drains). I suck. Scrubby McSuck.

I had an opportunity to Weld in Cap for 2nd outing of 3 cards, but chose to draw cards until I can discard fatty Titan and seal deal.. Jeff masterfully played a bunch of instant speed crap and mainphased Yawgmoth's Will to fuel and Wished for BrainFreeze for about 60.  I deserved that loss...Congrats Jeff Huang.  Nice deck.

I am scrubby McSuck.

I did however win an Underground Sea (bringing me back up to 1 Sea, 5 Trops, 2 Volcanics and 2 Tundras. (Oh, and a bayou and savannah and 2 taiga's).

For those interested in my Siding techniques, there are always cards in the board I wanted to side in... 3 Jugz, 1-2 Intuitions, 1-2 tutors, MindSlaver, Masticore and other goodies came out for goodies from board.  I wish that at LEAST 1 card maindeck was a Mishra's Factory or an Artifact Land for the whole Crucible Slaver lock thing that is technically possible.  I like the Factory Idea and it would be at least an option for Slaver being more than a 1 of.

Great touney, great vibes and all around good fun.

Anybody who was there, feel free to comment on my undiscolosed scrub mistakes that I made througout the day so that others may learn.

(sorry for technically a double post)

What A DIVERSE Meta!!!

7 different decks in the top 8!

This is almost entirely due to a) 12 proxies: Mad Props for Lunar to bumping the Proxies up to 12.  Normal people can play T1 for under 400 dollars (with help of friends). B) Awesome players bringing new decks and C) T1 for being so FUN! Everyone is BoRKen!11
