Here's My Report

Before we went to the tourney, we checked the stats from the last tournament.  3/4 of stax, combo, gifts, CS, etc, but around 15 Fish/WTF/Random aggro decks.  I figured having 3 MD trikes would help against aggro.  I didn't play any though.

Missisauga Untouchables Mox Pearl T1 (10 Proxy) - Around 32-36 Players is my guess

The Jester

First of all, we’ll start with the basic deck list

4 Mishra’s Workshop
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 Barbarian Ring
3 Mountain
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Sol Ring

4 Uba Mask
4 Tangle Wire
4 Crucible of Worlds
4 Jester’s Cap
4 Chalice of the Void
1 Trinisphere

4 Goblin Welder
3 Triskelion (Never needed it once, SB'ed out in EVERY matchup - Pretty much only good against Aggro)
2 Karn, Silver Golem

SB:

3 Shattering Spree (Never needed it, No Stax)
3 Granite Shard (Never needed it, No weenie decks or slaver)
3 Tormod’s Crypt
3 Defense Grid
3 Duplicant (Never needed it - No oath)

I did coverage of the first few rounds card for card, the rest are from memory.

Round 1: Clem Yuen – Grimlong

I get immediately notified by the judge that I have a deck register problem.  Game loss.  The error?  When I listed 5 moxes, I assumed it was self explanatory.  This is a 10 proxy tournament, I don’t have any proxies, yet I might be playing diamond/chrome mox instead of real ones…What a bad way to start, but that’s life.  What was better, is my opponent though that it was a bullshit call, and just wanted to play.  He said that we could ignore that ruling.  He is definitely a really nice guy, also very well known for playing combo, so I knew to play Crypts in Game 2.

Game 1

Starting hand:  Jet, Sapphire, Bazaar, 3sphere, workshop, cap, wasteland

He has a bad hand, and mulls to 5

Clem: Ruby
Me:  Sapphire, Jet, Wasteland, 3sphere
Clem: Pass
Me: Shop, Cap, crack it, he concedes.  Remember, I still don’t know what I’m playing against.

1-0 (Jester’s Cap wins, 1/1)

Game 2 - +3 Tormod’s Crypt, -3 Triskelion

Starting hand:  2x Goblin Welder, Tangle Wire, Sol Ring, Bazaar, Mountain, Crucible

Clem:  Lotus, Demonic Tutor, Sea, Vampiric Tutor, Pass
Me: Rip lotus like a pro, Play it, crack it for 2 Welders, Sol Ring, Mountain, Wire
Clem:  Tap sea, Pass
Me:  Draw Jester, Bazaar, Drawing 2 Uba Mask and Emerald.  Pitch 2 Uba and Jester’s Cap.  Play Emerald, weld in Cap floating  with sol ring, Jester wins it again

2-0 (Jester’s Cap wins, 2/2)

So losing Game 1 to a stupid deck registration error didn’t hurt me that bad.  Clem was really nice throughout the whole thing.  I didn’t even find out it was Grimlong until after the match was over.

1-0 Matches

Round 2: Shaun Stewart – Gifts

Shaun admitted to getting Uber-Broken hands, and there was nothing I could really do about it.  I feel I played it right.

Game 1:

I mulligan into: Workshop, 2 Crucible, B-Ring, Uba Mask, Wasteland

Shaun:  Jet, Ruby, Demonic Tutor, Lotus, Recall, Brainstorm, Lotus Petal, Flooded Strand, Pithing Needle naming Welder.  CRAP!

Me: Wasteland, Uba Mask, which gets drained.
Shaun:  Plays gifts for Tinker/Recoup, Walk, and Will.  Not much I can do here, no way to really win.

0-1

Game 2: +3 Defense Grid, +3 Tormod’s Crypt, -3 Trike, 2 Karn, 1 Crucible

Me:  Crypt, Sol Ring, Uba Mask
Shaun: Ubas a Jet, plays Jet, Volcanic, Time Walk
Shaun: Ubas a Sea, plays Sea, Rack and Ruin on Sol ring and Uba
Me: B-Ring, Trinisphere
Shaun: Academy, Pithing Needle on Wasteland
Me: Tangle Wire, Bazaar
Shaun: Gifts on upkeep for Recoup, Will, Tinker, Rebuild, I give him Tinker and Will
Me: Nothing
Shaun: Needles Bazaar (Still locked down from Wire)
Me: Goblin Welder
Shaun: Needle on Welder
Me: Shop, Wire #2
Shaun, Will, Rebuild, replay 3 Needles on Welder, Bazaar, Wasteland, Walk, Recoup, Tinker.

0-2

1-1 Matches

Round 3: Adrian – IT

Game 1:

Starting hand:  Pearl, Sapphire, Karn, Shop, Crucible, 2 Welders

Him: Sea, Recall, Jet
Me: Draw Tangle Wire, play 2 Moxes, Shop, Karn, which he forces with Intuition.  Now I knew that I was playing against IT.
Him: Delta, Brainstorm, Crypt, Petal, Fetch sea, Intuition for 2 rituals, lotus.  I give him ritual.  He casts ritual, ritual from hand, D-tutor for Yawgwill for the game.

0-1

Game 2:  +3 Tormod’s Crypt, +3 Defense Grid, -2 Karn, -3 Trike, -1 Crucible

Starting hand: 3 Chalice of the Void, Emerald, B-Ring, Tangle Wire, Uba Mask

Me:  Chalice for 0 and 1
Him: Fetch sea (Severely Screwed)
Me: Draw welder
Him: Swamp
Me: Draw Shop, play Tangle Wire
Him: Discard Pearl
Me: Draw Bazaar, play Uba and Bazaar
Him: RFG Intuition
Me: RFG Uba, play Chalice@ 2, Bazaar up a shop and Cap, play shop, cap
Him: Remove intuition
Me:  Activate cap, concedes

1-1 (Jester’s Cap wins, 3/3)

Game 3: +3 Tormod’s Crypt, +3 Defense Grid, -2 Karn, -3 Trike, -1 Crucible

Starting Hand: Shop, Emerald, Ruby, Defense Grid, Chalice, Jester’s Cap

Him: Mine, fetch sea, ritual into Necropotence, pays 5.  Discards Academy, Cabal Ritual
Me: Draw Bazaar, play Ruby, Emerald, Defense Grid.  Workshop, Chalice for 1.
Him: Island, Necro for 2, discards brainstorm
Me: Tangle Wire, Chalice for 0
Him: Necro for 3, discards Bargain, Force of Will, Flooded Strand
Me: B-Ring, Cap, Crack it (He doesn’t concede) I take Rebuild, Hurkyl’s, and the one Tendrils.  Tendrils didn’t really matter, as he was out of artifact hate after Hurkyl’s and Rebuild, so couldn’t stop it.

2-1 Matches

Round 4: Josh Oji – Salvagers

First of all, this is where I stopped taking detailed notes.  When we shuffle up, I see a Trinket Mage, so I already have some info on how to win.

Game 1:

Starting Hand: B-Ring, Welders, Trinisphere, Mana Vault, Jester’s Cap, Wasteland

All I have written is that it involves Vault, Cap, 3sphere, then shop into Uba and Cap again.

1-0 (Jester’s Cap Wins 5/5)

Game 2: +3 Tormod’s Crypt, -3 Trike

Starting Hand: 2x Mountain, Shop, Wasteland, Chalice, Crucible, Karn

Him: Island, Pearl go
Me: Draw and Play Ruby, Chalice @0, Shop, Crucible
Him: Island, go
Me: Mountain, Uba – Forced
Him: Island, Salvagers
Me: Karn – Forced

After this, it involved him swinging, then me B-ringing his Salvagers to death, and this went on with me killing 3 Salvagers and a Trinket mage with B-ring recursion.  This game was insane, I thought I was going to lose.  He Explosived my crucible, and I was bazaaring hitting nothing, with him hitting me from 12 life to 6.  Then I Bazaar up Uba Mask and Trinisphere.  I cast the Uba, and its countered.  He ran 4 forces 4 couners.  It kept going like this, until I finally resolved a crucible, killed his mage, then resolved an Uba, then bazaared up Welder and Cap, the same turn, playing both and cracking cap.  He conceded after this.  It was a really intense game, and I know people watching had fun.

2-0( Jester’s Cap Wins 6/6)

3-1 Matches

Round 5: Arend Kraehling – Control Slaver

We ID’d this one, as we knew we would make it in.  We did decide to play for fun anyways, not SB’ing.

Game 1:

I ended up winning game 1 with a combination of Cap and Uba.

1-0 (Jester’s Cap Wins 7/7)

Game 2:

I cap him for Titan, Will, and Something really important.  He ends up beating me to death with a Duplicant while countering everything, including 2 Uba masks and 3 more Jester’s Caps.

1-1

Game 3:

I lock him some good with Wire/Uba, then Caps go wild

2-1 (Jester’s Cap wins 8/8)

Top 8: Kris Kavanaugh – Gifts/TPS like deck

First we are informed that this is a TIMED T8.  If we don’t finish Game 3 within 50 minutes, it will go to 5 turns.  After that, it is determined by life totals.  This is really not fair, but what can we do.

Starting Hand: Lotus, Shop, Vault, Sol Ring, Jester’s Cap, Crucible, Karn

Game 1:

Play out Cap, he forces, Play Karn.

I end up beating him. Don’t remember much other than outracing Colossus beats with Savage Karn/Uba/Crucible beats

1-0 (Jester’s Cap Wins 7/8)

Game 2:

He goes some crazy with good cards and Rack and Ruin on 2 Ubas.

1-1

Game 3: 6 Minutes Remaining in Time

I draw into – Shop, Shop, Karn, B-Ring, Mountain, Bazaar, Wasteland

I have to keep this, as if he casts tendrils for anything, he probably wins.  If he gets colossus, he probably wins.  Turn 2 Karn would allow me to start dealing damage by Turn 3 so I could win this game the silly way.  I would NEVER keep this hand, as I always want chalice at 0 or welder against him, to stop the colossus.  The Tendrils is never a real rush, but I had Karn and a threshold land so I could try and ping him quickly for the win.  I keep it, play Shop, Go.

He goes: Land, petal, mox, Recall, DT, Tinker into Colossus.  This is where me looking for Chalice or Welder would have won me the game.  He mulled to 6, and couldn't have countered.  Had we played a real game, it might have been different. I dug, didn’t find welder, he smacked, and that was all she wrote.  Really unfair, not a real game, but shit happens.

I'm not that upset about losing, I'm just upset we didn't get to play a real game 3 to decide who goes to the semis.  We were forced to keep wierd hands cause of time constraints, his was good, mine was the best I could do with 3/4 minutes (after shuffling) and I didn't want to risk anything.  I'd rather lose a real game than have no real closure and finish a stupid match like that.

1-2

And this is the end of the tournament for me, 6h place I believe.  Sean Stewart had the same problem, as in Game 3 near time, his opponent playing G/R hate just burned him/smacking him for 1 got him into the Semis, and Sean was sent home.  Decks like G/R hate definitely are better at doing damage…

Afterthoughts about the deck:

Triskelions are definitely unnecessary in the main deck.  I played this deck a LOT like a prison deck just with Caps, and the results were amazing.  My only real match loss was to Gifts, though it had an incredibly broken hand.  I was expecting a lot of aggro, but didn’t end up facing any.

Tangle Wires are AMAZING.  Absolutely AMAZING.  They are defintely staying as a 4 of for now.

I really think we are getting to an optimal version of this deck.  There might be a few different types (aggro, control, w/e)

This version is very controlling, and rarely cares about swinging for the win.  The last 3 slots will probalby be more control cards, though I can't think of something at the moment.  If anyone has ideas, please post.  I'm thinking 3 Granite shards, with the changes being

From now on, the deck will look like this

-3 Triskelion
+3 Granite Shard (Not sure)

And SB would look like this

4 Duplicant (Oath)
4 Tormod's Crypt (Combo/Gifts/Slaver)
4 Defense Grid (This card was also amazing, great against any deck with drains/forces)
3 Shattering Spree - Not much stax in my Meta, but who knows what will happen in the future.

Props:

Jester’s Caps!
Cappy for splitting in the finals
Arend for having another really fun Round 5 Match.  We always play here and its always jokes.  SO funny
Clem for being cool and offering to play a normal match because of the stupid mox mistake.
My deck for being pretty damn good to me
Winning free entry into the next tournament

Slops:

STUPID T8 structure that had me keep a terrible hand in hopes of a cheap win.
Waking up at 8 AM and puking
Game loss for 5 moxes not being better identified
Triskelion – I didn’t play it a single time…not ONCE

All in all it was pretty good, though if they ever do timed Top 8 again, I will probably not attend.  My deck is not very good at doing damage, and shouldn’t be forced to just to win a match.

@Triskelions- I think you shoul keep them main deck as you will need some sort of quick finish against some control and is a house in a welder war aside from that you have nothing that cand generate quick board advantage against aggro.

Good job on the finish hopefully this meta gamed uba stax of yours will keep treating you well
