I'm surprised Kowal hasn't already come in here to mention this: The Dresden Dolls.
I saw them live a couple weeks ago and I wasn't impressed. They're talented musicians but the music just seemed to get old really quickly. Not my thing, I guess.

Let's see...I've always been all over XM radio on things like this. Recent songs I have enjoyed:
Hard rock/alternative: Crossfade - "Colors"
Fighting Instinct - "I Found Forever"
Silvertide - "Blue Jeans," "S.F.C," but I've enjoyed every Silvertide song I've heard quite a bit
Down - "Stone the Crow" The singer for Down is kinda eh (bad, actually), but man, can this band play. They just rock out hard core.
Hip-hop: Geto Boys - "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me" The Geto Boys are true revolutionaries -- brutally honest with vivid depiction of life on the Southern streets. This is where Scarface came from (before the group went solo). And it has Bushwick Bill. How can you not love a guy named Bushwick Bill?
Obligatory plug: RJD2. Best producer in hip-hop now. His solo work is by far the best. Multilayered and defetly complicated, it is amazing. Although these are a little old (2004), "Ring Finger" is an anthem and "Someone's Second Kiss" is what perfection sounds like.
I've rediscovered Redman's early stuff, before he and Method Man became the classic slackers. His first few albums were amazing, esp. when he was produced by E double (Eric Sermon).
Singer/songwriter:
Ellis Paul - "She Was" Blondfire - "Running Back (acoustic)"
Obligatory plug for Aimee Mann. I have this absolutely stunning version of "Lost in Space" from a recent webcast (she played this song on the acoustic concert tour I recently attended, but it's nice to have a recorded version).
Tori Amos has been treating me well, even if she is misguided (she's a radical feminist, but she more or less misses the point and falls into several traps). It is interesting to analyze what she writes in relation to her experiences and see just how she (almost tragically) fell into the mindset she has. Oh, and her music is outstanding too. All of Under the Pink is stunning.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! Phil Anselmo is one of the best metal vocalists I can think of. But you're right, Pepper Keenan shreds.

Probably one of my favorite bands now is one that nobody has heard of. Look up "Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers" on Myspace or on their website http://www.stephenkellogg.com. They have all of their albums free to stream from the website, and they are absolutely amazing.

What do you think of Kamelot as a power metal band? I SOOO wish their lyrics weren't retarded; especially The Black Halo.... Since no one has recommended em, let me recommend Dream Theater and Queensryche as well. Seriously, check out Porcupine Tree though Pac

Kamelot is pretty good. With a lot of power metal bands, the music is great but you really wish the guy would stop singing about that really great D&D game he played in 5 years ago.

Do you know of any melodic power metal bands like Kamelot that don't though, cause if you do, I'd love a recommendation baby! Pac

Blind Guardian isn't crazy about it. I'm sure you heard of them, though. Dark Moor is a little more progressive, but still awesome. From what I've heard of them, they're pretty low key on the over the top fantasy. Luca Turrilli is totally over the top, but manages to do it in a way that doesn't really put you off. Here are my album recommendations.
Blind Guardian - Either Nightfall in Middle Earth or Imaginations from the Other Side.
Dark Moor - Beyond the Sea.
Luca Turrilli - Kings of the Nordic Twilight.

Against Me! 's CD "Reinventing Axle Rose" is like the best CD i've ever heard before, but after that one, they signed with a major label (and hence probably aren't unknown anymore) and the following two haven't really been in the same league. "Searching for a former clarity" is still good, just not as good. If you like Indie-punk type stuff, Reinventing is literally the best CD I have ever listened to, I highly recommend picking it up.
I'm not entirely sure what qualifies as unknown, as I haven't really heard of any metal bands (so they're all unknown to me), but I also enjoy some Weakerthans, From Autumn to Ashes, and probably some more that I can't think of off the top of my head. They are probably far from unknown, but I don't really know much of anything anymore so =p

Boards of Canada is totally worth checking out.
Correct. Excellent smooth, trancey trip-hop. I am not sure how "unknown" these canada-obsessed scots are though. I recommend DragonForce to anyone who likes over the top power metal. Seriously, these guys are almost as silly as Man O' War.
Hahaha. Powermetal. Check out Rhapsody. Their albums follow a several thousand year storyline, it's powermetal at it's most powermetally.

Sigur Ros is well-known band outside US soil, originating in Iceland. There music is unique and inspiring, classified as post modern rock. Check out the album Agaetis Byrjun.
I'll second that suggestion. I'm going to see their show here in Toronto on the 13th ... can't wait.

or you could just do what I do since I can't stand the commercial radio around here and find yourself a live365.com station that suits your fancy. I have Ska Punk and Other Junk playing on the headphones at work most days.
