I am one of those people who will walk into a record shop and buy an album by people I've never heard of based on artwork, album title, band title, etc... I have discovered pure talent by doing this.. My newest find: Matisyahu.. Amazing
Anyone else know of some good unheard of bands?

I found Sufjam Stevens album to grow on me. Hes doing an album for each state in the country. I would recommend his Illinois as a good start. (Hes also done Michigan). It presents a good mix of styles and content. I didnt think that I enjoyed it that much at first, but after the second and later listening find myself humming and whistling tunes from it. Its that infectuous.

Elliott Smith - Songs From A Basement On A Hill That album is completely solid. It has this incredible tension and force to it. I'm not big on singing guitarists but Elliiott had a lot of talent and his lyrics are amazing. I can't reccommend it enough. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over The Sea Again, really passionate, interesting songs. There's one clunker on the album but all the other songs are nice ballady stuff or really strong rock. It's good. It's hard to describe their sound You can hear one of their songs here: http://www.mergerecords.com/audio/neutralmh/Holland1945.mp3Also, if you'd like to try something a little more oddball, give The Starlight Mints a chance. They've got this spacey, really poppy indie sound with lots of weird instrumentation and nonsense lyrics. It's like the nuclear bomb testing radiation in the 50's attracted some aliens and this is what their half-alien, half-human kids produce-- stream-of-consciousness pop.

Matisyahu is unheard of? Maybe when you found him but the cat is very firmly out of the bag by now. I'm fucking sick of all the airplay he gets here! It also doesn't help that I think his ultra-orthodox stance on women is barbaric at the least (he won't shake their hands or even share a stage with women).
Back on topic, try "Horse Stories" by Dirty Three. Guitar, violin, drums; instrumental, crescendo, emotional, clattering, rocking, wrenching.

Bløf - Umoja (they're a Dutch-language softrock band that's pretty huge over here, but probably unheard of in the States. They did a song together with Counting Crows abouttwo years ago, a revision of "Holiday in Spain" which was ppetty awesome).
a balladeer - Panama (to be released this friday, english language belgian poprock)
K's Choice - Cocoon Crash (Belgian poprock from the nineties, english language)

K's Choice is actually a band? I have some random mp3 of them playing Hallelujah and I couldn't tell from the filename if that was a band or album or bootleg or what.

Sigur Ros is well-known band outside US soil, originating in Iceland. There music is unique and inspiring, classified as post modern rock. Check out the album Agaetis Byrjun.

I was under the impression people know about them by now, given they've been on like a half dozen late-night shows. The campus store at Umass even has a Dresden Dolls display up for the new album (which is amazing, by the way)

They're known to a bunch of people inside the US, as well. Mainly people who listen to bands such as Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Explosions in the Sky, Maserati, The Notwist, etc. (Me, for example). Take these bands as suggestions, as well. Demonhunter I absolutely LOVE Demonhunter.

K's Choice is actually a band? Yup. It's a continued source of grievance to me that the best Dutch-language literature as well as music is made by the Belgians. Oh well, at least our beer is better. Oh wait. You may or may not have seen K's Choice playing in The Bronze in a 'Buffy'-episode. Also, the lead singer Sarah Bettens has lived in the States for some time now, so you have a better chance of bumping into her than I do Here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%27s_Choice'Cocoon crash' is a beautiful and very moving album, with a lot of memories for me. Check it out, if you can find it.

Wow since when are Ween and LCDss Unknown ?!?!?!?dfjsdklfjklsdj! Ween has had a huge indy cult following since the very early nineties they were even on one of the lolopallooza tours (iirc). (though i am canadian so meh) LCD sound system is unknown just like franz ferdinand is unknown. If you like LCD may i suggest some others, none of these should be unknown to anyone even remotley interested in these genras but anyway, some are more electro some are more dance/punk or "death disco" your tastes may vary: Peaches M.I.A. (toured with lcd this past summer probably the two biggest albums of last year) Ladytron Le Tigre Fisherspooner Goldfrapp Yeah Yeah Yeahs Tracy and the Plastics

To stray away from the norm while not including too much Japanese (Actual japanese lyrics I mean, not artists) stuff.
If you like a bit of technoish stuff mixed with piano tracks / insturmental stuff, then DJ Taka is really good.
For normal techno stuff... Teranoid, Kors K and Tatsh all do solid work for the IIDX series and two of them have CD's out (though they're underground and a bit harder to find)
Akira Yamaoka also does a ton of good work in a number of musical genres (He's the sound director / producer for the Silent Hill video game series for those who have played) and has a CD out.

http://www.pandora.com/this site is quite interesting. I received it off Warren Ellis' Bad Signal email. You put in a band you like, and it gives you reccomendations (based upon other users) of other bands you may like. You can then rate the choices and it further refines your searches. I have found a couple of cool bands this way, and, because it's the internet, you get bands from all over the world. j

A Perfect Murder is really good. It sounds a lot like old Metallica and Pantera mixed together. Also, www.metalstorm.ee is a really good site for metal groups, underground or well known.
