Hey all! Good to see so many people with such a large interest in Vintage.. like others before. Some small info about myself.

I started playing magic in 94.. I was only about 13 years old then but I remember still being able to buy packs of legends, AN, and antiquities still at the local flea market for normal pack prices.

During that time I came into power, traded a ton of power.. I do believe I traded a Mox Sapphire for a gauntlet of might and a thunderspirit once. Around 2001, I sold my classic deck to help pay rent for a month while being in college.

Many years and a career later.. I've come back to Magic and it feels like coming home. 6 Months ago I had to start back at nothing.. but after slowly buying back legacy staples, duals etc. My eyes are now coming back to getting those old vintage cards that I used to have and play with them over and over.

Now I spend my days leading a concept art team in the game industry, and wasting alot of time browsing mtg forums. I hope to spend alot of time on the forums in the coming years and meeting such a like minded bunch.

Hello, my name is Anthony and I am 28 years old.  I have played Mt:G off and on with varying levels of intensity since I first started playing in the times of Ice Age and Homelands.

I have never been primarily a competitive player, but I love to build and tune decks as much as anyone.

The last time I played regularly was playing Standard during Alara/Eldrazi Standard.  I have chosen to play Vintage because I get to play with the most iconic and powerful cards in the game that I love so much.  Vintage allows me to get excited about Magic in a way that no other format can, and reconnects me to a (fondly remembered) time of my life when carefree days were mostly spent playing Magic with friends.

I live in Columbus, OH.  I am happy that there are opportunities to play Vintage on a weekly basis here!  I hope that continues, and I will try to make any event that I am able within a reasonable driving distance.

Hi,

another new face. I started playing during Unlimited, quit around Mirage but started playing again during Innistrad. Today I play Legacy and Modern, but as I slowly acquire more cards for my Legacy pool, I'm getting increasingly interested in Vintage. I reckon this should be the place for learning the Vintage meta. Anyhow, I guess my first point of entry will be a budget deck, so any suggestions as to what would be a reasonable budget choice for the current meta is highly appreciated. Thank you!

Cheers,

Whats up Anthony and welcome to TMD!

Team Serious has a strong contingent in Columbus. I'd recommend contacting Nat Moes if you're interested in some Vintage action. He'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Welcome to TMD wuberg.

The budget deck concept is kind of a loose term now a days. Before it used to mean Null Rod/Stony Silence decks, but now it can include a few more archetypes.

Also, pending what you play in Legacy you might be able to port it over to Vintage. We've seen a surge in aggro control decks such as RUG Delver, BUG, Human.dec, and Landstill might even be considered budget since you can squeak by without being powered.

Thank you! I play OmniTell and Pox in Legacy and am only a few duals short of completing RUG Delver. Using cards I already own would of course be great, but I'd rather not port an entire deck since it would just feel like I'm still playing Legacy. Smile I will definitely check the Null Rod/Stony Silence decks. For starters, I'm basically interested in any kind of non-Legacy port that can put up reasonable results without being powered.

Hi there. My name is Hrishi and I am from Northern NJ. Funnily enough, I'm a new player to MTG itself, only having started about a month ago. It might be strange that I am most interested in the eternal formats, but standard is a lot more boring than how games go in legacy. I dove straight into the legacy and currently play both Stasis (my pet deck, despite it's viability being in question) and Pox. That being said, I've always been interested in Vintage because I love being able to play every card in existence, some cards are just amazing and it's a bit of a drag not being able to play them in other formats!

I am actually not sure how to look for places where people play vintage, the store locator on the wizards website only works for sanctioned tournaments and there are none around me. However am I right in assuming that there are people who play vintage here (I live in Newark, so I'm fairly close to most parts of NJ and even New York City)?

I am not a fan of netdecking, but I would appreciate any insight into understanding the vintage metagame. Most importantly, if anybody can point me in the right direction of finding people who play vintage in my area, I'd be most grateful!

Welcome to TMD, Hrishi.

You're a lucky guy.  Top Deck Games is about an hour or so away from you; Nick Coss (the store owner) is one of the most dedicated Vintage T/O's in the country, and runs monthly Vintage events.  On top of that, Nick will be hosting Vintage and Legacy Champs in Philadelphia at the beginning of November.

There are also occasional Vintage events that I run in New York.  Last summer I ran a large event, the N.Y.S.E. Open.  I'm looking to run the second iteration of that event next June.  This trip should run you about an hour as well.

There are several stores in Pennsylvania that run Vintage events.  You should check out The Player's Guild (in Bloomsburg) and MVPLS (in Lancaster).

If you're looking for a general feel of the format, you should check out some of the articles in the Article Discussion Forum.  Smmenen recently posted a free article about the expected metagame for Champs.  This should give you a fair idea as to the landscape of Vintage right now.

Good luck!

Hi, my name's Gerald and I'm from the Los Angeles area.  I'm happy to have finally figured out how to become a member here on TMD.  Maybe I should have read the sticky sooner.

I've been playing the vintage for about two years now.  Mostly proxy tournaments here plus some games during breaks of tournaments.  There's a decent number of people with decks around here and they're always up for some games.

I don't know how I manged it, but my wife agreed to let me fly to Philly to play in vintage champs Very Happy  It should be fun and I'm glad to have finally joined the vintage community here.

Hi,
I'm Mike and I live in lower Michigan.  I am a graphic designer by trade and enjoy craft beer.  I have been playing magic since 93.  My brother and I played in tournaments in the south in the mid 90s.  We got out of the game just before Urzas and got back in around Coldsnap.  We have since helped bring about a healthy legacy community in the Jackson area (Michigan).  Now we have decided within the last six months to play the format we loved and missed, Vintage.  This came about by my listening to So many insane plays.  I introduced it to my brother and now we are hooked.  I currently am playing RUG delver and dredge.  We are trying to build up a community in our area and will soon be branching out and playing in tournaments in the Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo area.  I look forward to rapping with you gents.  Also, if anyone can tell me how to edit my profile that would be helpful.  cheers!

Welcome to TMD Mike. Ohio and Michigan have been a lyrical battleground for years and it seems like you're in a prime location for Vintage. Team Serious has a pretty consistent tournament schedule in Ohio and I know there's a budding scene up in Kalamazoo.

Vintage Guru, Scarf Aficionado, and creator of the Demarsian Value Technology concept, Brian Demars used to run/host tournaments in Livonia, but I'm unsure if anything is still firing up there. I remember at one point RIW had the toughest Vintage tournament in the states... 100% vintage gunslingers.

Looking forward to seeing ya on the Vintage tourney circuit.

Hi,

My name is Michael, I live in SF. I've only been playing Mtg for two and a half years, and I became fascinated with the eternal formats about a year after that.  I finally decided to actually start playing Vintage more recently, and I've been to a few proxy tournaments now, and made some top 8s. The community is just great, and playing vintage is an amazing experience (Even if I'm just testing on Cockatrice).

Well, now I can stop lurking on this forum and (hopefully) offer my perspective when I can. I値l see you guys around  Very Happy.

Welcome to TMD, guys!

JarofFortune, you should reach out to Smmenen regarding tournaments in your neck of the woods; he lives in your general vicinity and would be able to better direct you to the local scene.

Great to have you both here!

I suppose I ought to introduce myself, even though I kind of jumped in.  I am Jim Sharkey, silent-ish business partner of Nick Coss at TDG, and long time Magic player - 20 years this past October - give or take a break or two over time.  I still have a beta Timetwister I opened from my very first pack crack.  General enjoyer (but infrequent player, due to work, family, etc.) of Vintage, thinking about trying Legacy, and will probably mostly lurk but may occasionally pipe up with a thought or two on the off chance I have something interesting to say.

Hello everyone, my name is Matt Klinkhammer. I had a lot of fun at my first vintage tournament, playing Guli's Human Ingenuity deck to a split in the finals. I also played a budget version at vintage champs to a top 64 finish and 3rd in the budget prizes.

I've had a ton of fun playing vintage and hope to play and learn more about the format while I'm here!

Hello- I'm Kate and I'm new to vintage.  I've played a ton of limited, but only really started playing constructed formats consistently after my move PA this year.  I'm not a "sit on the sidelines" kind of gal and since my boyfriend plays, I figured it was time to get my feet wet.  I've found the vintage players I've met are some of the kindest, most helpful and technically proficient players.  I'm looking forward to reading and learning more from all the veterans here!

Matt (klinkyrules), my better half.

Hi. My name is Jon Acton.  I have been playing magic only a short time (started in the Rise of the Eldrazi block).  I work at Atomic Empire in Durham, NC as an event coordinator. I recently acquired my power this year and have loved playing in vintage.  I have played in 4 vintage tourney to date and top 8ed one of them playing Oath.

Another love I have is cubing.  I have a 720 powered cube that is recently foiled out.

Hi folks -

I'm Rob, a Vintage & Modern player living in Pittsburgh.  I played in the early days, roughly Legends through Stronghold, and got back into the game around Dark Ascension.  I'm pretty excited that there looks to be a regular sanctioned Vintage tournament scene brewing in the 'burgh and I hope to see some of the midwest crew there  Smile

Hi Rob,

It's nice to meet a fellow Vintage player here in Pittsburgh. Have we met in person before?  In any case, send me a message and I'll be happy to tell you about the local scene. There isn't a ton of Vintage here, but there's plenty of Legacy, and Pittsburgh is a fine place to be playing Magic.

Hey all. I wanted to join TMD primarily for the discussion on original Magic art, but also because, when I started playing, Homelands was the latest expansion, and I can't imagine playing in a format that won't let me use Necropotence.  {B} {B} {B}  Wink I've never really been a competitive player, mostly because I couldn't be bothered to completely change my deck every few months, so for me cafeteria/kitchen-table Magic has always been where it's at.

As a side note, I'm located in Toronto, Ontario, so if anyone knows a good place to play casually, or competitively in Vintage/Legacy, let me know.

Hi everyone.

I guess you have one more European player on your boards now. I'm Tom, 27 years old and residing in Belgium.

Some random tidbits about my "career" as a player.

I've started playing Magic right after Mercadian Masques hit the shelves. I vividly remember my dissappointment when I pulled a Rishadan Port out of my first "tournament pack". The foil Thrashing Wumpus I found in the same pack however, stymied that dissappointment quickly.

After playing casual for a few years and occasionally partaking in pre-releases, I started getting into Legacy around...2008, I guess? I joined a local team called MCG (Magic Club Ghent). Having a testing group and people to travel and discuss strategy with, lend cards from,...has been invaluable for my development as a Magic player.

Playing the Mighty Quinn, I played my first GP (Madrid) in 2011. I didn't do well (obviously), but man, I LOVED that deck. I guess my most notable "minute of fame" must have been when my exact decklist (I top-8'd a GPT with it, my first ever top 8 if I recall correctly) was featured in Smennen's old "here's a million legacy decklists you should know about"-article over at star city. Story Circle and Mistveil Plains being my signature "tech" at the time, as well as the Ray of Distortions in the sideboard to combat Counterbalance. Still, that matchup was rough.

I branched out to Vintage shortly after I picked up the (Mystical Tutor-fueled) Ad Nauseam-deck in Legacy. I happened to own a bunch of the black "broken" cards (Y.Will, Bargain, Necro, VT, DT,...) from playing a sort of Napster-type MBC-deck in casual constructed, so I only needed a few proxies to be able to build the Vintage version. Since I resolved Yawgmoth's Will that very first time at a tournament, I haven't found a single more satisfying spell to sling in Magic. So I guess I was to be a blue mage then Smile.
I acquired my first "power" cards (not actual POWER, though) at the first Bazaar of Moxen I attended, back in 2011 as well. By that time, I was on UBg Mystic Remora Control. That Time Vault and Library of Alexandria have won me a lot of games since.

I got my first "real" power after I top 4'ed a 40-player tournament in Mol in early 2012. A beat-up Time Walk and a Mox Ruby further got me invested into the format. In a little over a year, I acquired the other Moxen and a Recall. At GP Utrecht 2012, I managed to get a great deal on a Lotus from one of the on-site dealers. Even though the tournament itself didn't go all that well, I still left the venue carrying the biggest of smiles that night, thanks to that little flower sitting in my binder.

These days, I can be seen playing pratically any format imaginable. I've day-2'ed GP's in 3 different formats (Limited, Legacy, Standard), top 8'd my very first PTQ in Modern, scored byes for the Vintage portion of the 2 latest BoM's (*) and still occasionally play casual constructed with my old friends from back in the day. I'm mostly known by the local community as "The guy behind the Belgian Legacy Cup" and "that dude who used to judge a bunch". I try my best to create some buzz whenever a Vintage-event takes place, but it's been rough getting together 8+ people lately. The Dutch Vintage Championship was canceled recently, due to not enough people signing up upfront. I'm hoping to organize a new event together with the Dutchies, in order to have a BeNeLux Vintage Championship somewhere in March. Hopefully, by combining the 3 regions, we can get the community in touch again and maybe reinvigorate the format a bit.

I guess that brings us to the main reason I registered here on TMD. Aside from looking to get some interesting feedback and deckideas, I mainly expect to be putting up announcements for our local tournaments. I know most users here hail from North America, but if there are any Belgian / Dutch / French / German players reading this, feel free to reach out. I you have an event taking place in this region, I will glady promote it through our local forums, my facebook-account and the Belgian Legacy Cup's website.

Not 'cause I'm that much of a "good guy", really. I just wanna make sure I get to resolve a LOT of Yawgmoth's Wills in the years to come.

Cheers guys,

Tom

(*) Consider these to be the humblest of brags, since I still haven't been able to cash any non-local event. YET.

Hello everyone. I am Clark. I like the card Kiln Fiend.

I'm pretty new to vintage (I mostly have played hatebears), but I think I found the deck for my in Grow, because that deck can sideboard in kiln fiends for hilarity. Hope to see you guys around (Ps. I can't find a recent grow thread, did I miss one? I don't want to accidentally make one when there is already an active one).
