Wow... that Argentinian coach sucked. What do you do when you are 1-0 up? That's right... take of all your good strikers and put in some mid-fielders while leaving Messi on the bench. YAY! That way, you are sure to lose against Germany because they ALWAYS score in the last 10 minutes. NO EXCEPTIONS.
We had a Dutch coach who substituted our best player on the field... we fired his ass after that. I suspect the Argentinians will do the same.
I'm going to have to agree here. I thought it was a terrible decision. Argentina doesn't exactly have renowned fullbacks to help protect a lead either, so I don't know what the coach was thinking. It would've been more in tune with Argentine soccer to play for the second goal, which would've surely sent them onwards. Oh, and yeah, wtf was Messi doing on the bench?! They should've brought him in at the end, that way the Germans would not have been allowed to press forward the way they did.

I agree with Toad, France is looking rather strong at this point, with alot of that resting on Zidane's playing. However, Barthez (sp?) is also one of the better keepers out there, which will help since shootouts are happening so much during this tournament.
Oh and I am also registered as a USSF ref, but only grade 8

Yeah that was pretty ridiculous. I knew something was up when he dummied those Brazilians in the opening minutes of the game. I'm always pulling for Italy, but I would be just as happy if France won it all.

Now that France dropped Brazil,i think the final will be Germany-France,0-0 after 120min,3-4 after kicks and France takes the cup... That just cannot possibly happen. if you want to beat ze Germans, you have to do that in 120 minutes. With penalties ze Germans just canīt lose. If I was the french, which fortunately I am not, and they have to play the final, I suggest they beat ze Germans in 90 minutes. History shows that also in the extra time with 2 goals down, they canīt be beaten.

I actually took the time to watch the England-Portugal match on Saturday morning, and I found that I enjoyed every minute of it. Having played soccer in youth leagues nearly my whole life, this was one of the first times that I've taken the time to sit down and watch professionals in a high-profile game. I was particularly appalled by the strategy of the English goalkeeper in the penalty kicks. As a goalkeeper myself, I'm very familiar with defending penalty kicks by means of watching the kicker plant their hips, then diving that way. Perhaps the guessing method had worked well for Robinson before, but not this time.
Also, I'm American. Ignorance of the sport is no excuse to make fun of such an event.

Germany will have reall hard time to win over reborn "Toni Italy"...the best attacker this season in europe is scoring again...I would put my money on Italy for shure... And germany has lehman for taking care of penals...so no fear in that vs france if it happens...Coupe would be much better goalkeeper for france, but they are doing so well for now

World Cup.... Isn't that the boat racing thing? Us Americans can never remember. The rest of the world has a different definition of "World Cup" than the US does. If you go to the Football World Cup, for example, you will face teams from everywhere in the World ! This is fairly different from the NBA, the NFL or the NHL, for example, where the winner got awarded the "World Champion" title despite only facing North Americans.

To be fair, the NFL World Champion seems justified, as the only other real American Football league is NFL Europe, which is like NFL Minor League. The NFL Europe Champs are not really on the same level as the regular Super Bowl winner. As far as Baseball (MLB vs. Japanese and other leagues), Basketball(the NBA is probably the most competitive league in the world, as players from all over aspire to play here), and Hockey (I don't know anything about this stuff), there's at the very least a shadow of doubt over whether they really are the best, altho NBA and MLB Champs are likely deserving of their titles.
Obviously, Major League Soccer does not make such claims =/
On a relevant note: France seemed to just have their way with Brazil. Zidane was in fact amazing, and seemed in my eyes to be far and away the best player on the field that day. Whats this about European teams always winning in Europe? Seems pretty likely this year!

You have to be very proud of yourself to claim your National Championship "World Championship". Even if the NBA is the most competitive championship in the World, that hardly makes it a World Championship. So well, these title are clearly not deserved and are just a sign of some hyperdevelopped ego Go go France, Portugal boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooh! France really outplayed Brazil that was nice to watch. 30M out of the 68M Frenchies watched the game !

I really do hope the Frenchies beat them backstabbin badplaying Portuguese. let me be a little biased here as i really think them actors should be banned from competing. Sure, the red card of Roony was well deserved, but we do not know what them Portuguese players have been doing to Roony up untill that point. Amd lets face it, the balls of that Portuguese player cannot have been that big to squirm for that long.
Italy - Germany is an interesting game. Italy seems to be getting better as the tounrnament goes on. Germany pulled out a perhaps not deserved win but a real German win by sheer fighting spirit. Italy has not yet won that game, so for me this is the more interesting game.
I hope the final will be Italy - France, but i will be as happy with Germany - France. As i have liked the way the Germans have performed and have shown that class is not always the big issue here, they formed a real team and whatever the outcome have my respect as i was one the the many people criticising the team and they have proven me wrong. Good for them and Klingsman.

As someone who has officiated soccer for a number of years
USSF? What grade level? Just wondering, never actually meant another licensed referee through Magic before I did USSF for about 3 years. I was grade 7. I did Region I Snickers and Region I ODP also. Awesome, i'm only a grade 8 but my three ref assignors want me to rank up even though I don't have much of a desire to since I only really do this during Spring and Fall where having a job is unrealistic while being a full-time student...Although, I have had the pleasure of being a center for two ODP matches during a tournament, that was a great experience. Hopefully France beats the living shit out of the Portugese and gives revenge to the Dutch. I'll be happy with France or Italy winning the Cup.

I thought it was an excellent game by both teams. It took a spectacular goal to send the Germans home. I think regardless of which team came on top after such a game, the loser could go home with their heads held high. Go France and FORZA AZZURRI!

Try watching the NBA - out of all the American popular sports (i.e. not including soccer), it's far and away the worst officiating ever. In all fairness, the American Football has without a doubt the worst officiating out of any major sport. The officials are not even professionals. They are part timers, who have other jobs because there are so few games a year. They're only paided for the 16+ games a year they work. None of them know the rule book cover to cover. On top of that, they have a tremendous amount of influence on who wins the game. On a note more in tune with the subject of this thread, people in America are talking about the world cup, so it must be a really good one this time around.

American Football has a Major equalizing factor for referees though, that any non-judgement call can be reviewed if the Coaches (or late game, other officials) believe a mistake has been made. Nobody takes back fouls in the NBA, but in the NFL you can take back a bad call, if its a concrete rule.

I saw the Italy Germany game today in the North end of Boston. It was crazy after they won. There was so much suspense building up to the last two goals. Unfortunaly I was surrounded by this large group of German opairs who were chanting during the entire game. Why they had to come to little Italy to annoy us I don't know. I guess there is no little Germany in Boston.

To be fair, the NFL World Champion seems justified, as the only other real American Football league is NFL Europe, which is like NFL Minor League. This by no means implies an American team would win an actual world cup. Two years ago in the European Football Championships, Greece took the cup. They are a relative puny country footballwise, if compared to Netherlands, Germany, England, France, etc etc. But still they won, because of a huge team effort. Same for what South Korea 4 years ago did, reaching the semi-finals in the world cup. These games can take some teams to insanely higher levels then usual. Our Amsterdam Admirals can kick your a** Oh, and go go Azzuri. Awesome two goals indeed. Lehmann is not too blame, as he just had no chance to catch either. And never thought I would say this, but VIVE LES BLEUS

And there was justice...
And the Portuguese finally found a referee that saw through the comedy capers they were playing...
And the Protuguese found justice...
And France will go to Berlin in search of yet another title, as will Italy.
And there was much rejoycement as Portugal lost...
Serves them well...

As per eurosport.com: "And Scolari made his feelings known in an angry outburst after the final whistle, finger-wagging furiously and clearly upset by his adopted nation's elimination. But Scolari - who saw a 12-game unbeaten run at World Cups come to an end - can have few complaints that his side are only playing hosts Germany for third place after an ineffective display which found them sadly lacking in the French box and too often resorting to disgraceful 'simulation' in a desperate bid to find an opening." Ouch! Although, I can't say the criticism is unjust.
