After considering the latest prize announcement, it seems to me that Wizards is commissioning arts in a specific pattern. In particular, it would seem that they are choosing which pieces award by alternating power rankings from the remaining unawarded pieces. Consider:
2003 - Black Lotus - Carl Winter 2004 - Timetwister - Mark Biller 2005 - Ancestral Recall - Roland Chang 2006 - Mox Pearl - obviously is going to be andy probasco
If this is in fact similar to the guidelines used, I predict the following future prizes:
2007 - Mox Sapphire 2008 - Mox Emerald 2009 - Time Walk 2010 - Mox Ruby 2011 - Mox Jet
These predictions are based on a simple alternating pattern chosen from a list of the power nine ranked in order of strength.

This artwork is incredible. The manner of how disciplined the sketch itself is really shows the skill of the artist.
Amazing!

The only thing I am disappointed about is that it is not by the original artist, Dan Frazier. Other than that, the art is excellent.

Yes,Tarmogoyf is probably better than Chameleon Colossus, but comparing it to Tarmogoyf is like comparing your girlfriend to Carmen Electra - one's versatile and reliable, the other's just big and cheap.(And you'd run both if you could get away with)

My prediction was almost the same - Time Walk and Sapphire were switched. Anyway, the art for Pearl is very nice, but not as good as Lotus and Ancestral, IMO.

those cards are amaaaaazing. too bad there are no big high res pics of it for background usage. imo the black lotus, is the nicest. then recall, then time, then mox pearl. maybe I should mail the winners of the artworks and ask for scans

wondering...what is the reason for using the original text on the lotus, when they used the oracle text on the A. Recall? Personally i prefer the original drawings Nostalgia i guess, though the lotus is decent. /Zeus

That's because that's exactly what it is. Carl only won the painting, not a card mockup.

I am fairly certain this is the case. The original art I believe was just in the normal frame with no "card" frame. Ancestral Recall was the first prize to have the card frame added to the prize that was actually awarded.

I think the Mox Pearl art is sharp. Heck, I'd be happy just hanging the sketch on my wall.
They're much more displayable than the Timetwister. I have to admit that I've never really seen the appeal of hanging Magic card art on my walls. There are a few pieces that would be okay, but who wants a bunch of skeletons and goblins decorating their family room?
Perhaps I'd put Disembowel in my bathroom, though...

I have magic art im about to get framed. I got signed prints of Yawgs will, crucible of worlds, and minds desire off spencer's ebay site. I am going to get them framed in their respective colors, and also get a card put in with it. I also own a black lotus cell which I took out of its frame to get rematted. If the art is good, you should be able to put it up no matter what. j

Agreed. My dad has the orginal artwork for Darksteel Colossus, and it looks REALLY nice above our piano. Even my mom, who kinda hates magic thinks so.

First off, the Timetwister is ASS UGLY. Second off, the Mox Pearl art is really, really good. Nothing like any Magic art I've ever seen before.
And lastly, I can't believe anyone remembers something I did like, 18 years go. Makes me feel all soft and squishy inside.

I feel like the proportions on the hands are off. Not sure if thats the way its drawn, or just the tilt of the picture that we have. Also, is it just me, or are those man hands? The fingers seem awfully think, ditto on the really short nails. I think I would have liked them to be more effeminate.
All that being said, this is tied for my favorite piece with the lotus.
I think the twister is but ugly, and the recall picture looks like something out of a poorly drawn comic book.

That's because it's more like a real piece of art. Like a painting by Ingres from his best period.

If making paintings to look like photograghs is the goal, then this guy wins hands down.
There is amazing technical skill here, but the composition and my interest are lacking. My eye is drawn right to the middle and then that's it. It looks like an assignment was just completed here. *shrug*
I hope Wizards heavily considers deviating from the power nine cards early. Moxen are rather boring if you ask me. I'd much rather have reinterpretations of any of the following staples before them:
Demonic Tutor Wheel of Fortune Worldgorger Dragon Yawgmoth's Will Tinker Mana Drain Workshop LoA + more

I persoanlly hate the Mox Pearl art. The hands just sort of ruin the mystique of the artifact to me. The coolness of the original moxes is that they're just pieces of jewlery. They could be on anyone.
Also, alternate Mana Drain art would be sweet.

I also agree... That mox pearl art is hideous. It looks more like a [card]Jeweled Amulet[/card] than a mox.
