I've got mushroom clouds in my hands

I'm currently fixing up a condo, and I'm faced with a choice I can't make heads nor tails of, so I'm asking you guys.

There's a big old hole between a hallway and a room in my condo where a door used to be. Now I decided I'm gonna leave it open, since it's quite practical. I don't want a rectangular door, so I decided to make a nice arch. The question is, do I want a true semi-cirle, or a more oval shaped arch?

Both options are equally practical (though the semi-circle leaves a little less 'room' to walk through, it's still much more than your average doorway and a not a problem in the least), so the matter is purely aestetical. I took a pic from two perspectives, and photoshopped the arch in (kinda sloppily, but whatever). If it helps, the doorway is 4'3" wide, and the top of the arch is about 7'5" high (about 7" below the ceiling).

I need a decision by monday, so please let me know which you think is the better option (ofcourse I'd like you to post any reason you might have as well). Thanks guys!

I hereby present both options:

Option 1: Semi-Circular Arch

Option 2: Oval-Shaped Arch

Hi,

I will said the semi circular because it will give an impression of fluidity, altough the other one will be shocking because it's a "point d'accroche" for the eyes, it means that, in architecture, when you make it, you'll have a break in the line of vision.  I don't know if I'm clear...

That's my opinion Smile

Semi-circle.  What goes in an oval?  Planets?  Yeah, well planets get demoted and shit, so they suck.  Can't even live on most of them.  Ya know what a semi-circle is?   Half a circle.  You know what comes in circles?  Pie.

Pie>planets.  Semi-circle>oval.

Go with the oval. It opens the room up more and its less geometric shape adds character. You're building a place to live in, not a church.

That's not entirely true. Planets are deformed spheres. Even the earth isn't so perfectly rounded. At the center it's bulging slightly.

Their orbits are ovals, like I said.  If "deformed sphere" was an option I would have said "semi-circle" was a better idea.

The semi circle, even though it takes up more room, draws your eyes upwards with its shape and therefore gives the impression of more room.

Oval looks like a failed half-circle. If you first want to arch, arch properly. Oval is neither this or that really..

I think CF just read my mind. That is indeed my major "worry" regarding the oval.

In my grandmother's old house, she had these type of oval arches, and literally every time I went there, I thought the builder was just like, "ah fuck it, who's going to notice?"

Definitely go with the semi-circle.

Go with whatever the most reoccuring theme is within your condo.  Be it oval or semi-circle.  If that fails go with the cheapest.

OK, it's decision time tomorrow! I shopped the mess away, threw in a wooden floor and made the walls white (as they will be). Note the awesome Rocketeer poster I threw in for goor measure Smile

I'm slightly preferring the round one over the elliptical one.

Looks good. The semi-circle is the more elegant version. The Oval just looks fat, and quite unproportioned. You can do Ovals when you have so much space that nobody will really notice it's an oval, or when you need to cover space that is wider than high. This is apparently not the case here, so I'd go semi-circular.

Oval only looks cool if the radius of the ellips in the vertical direction is larger then the radius of the ellips in the horizontal direction. As neither design equals those specs, go with the closest approximation, which is the semi circle.
