Since there seems to be a wave of nostalgia running across TMD lately, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon.
What I'm looking for is not the best play or deck. I'm looking for a metagame call that put one deck over the top. Either by shoring up a bad match-up, introducing a card no one had ever been seen played, or using the deck and/or certain cards in it in a way that had yet to be done.
Mine is very simple. At 1998 Regionals, Donais 5CU and Sligh were at a dead tie for the top 2 decks. However, head-to-head 5CU had a significant advantage because of Gerrard's Wisdom, but mostly because of Wall of Blossoms. Sligh could basically end the game before a Wisdom or Wrath could be cast if it wasn't for the Flagpole cantripping Sligh's creature assault to a crawl.
Enter James Farr.
He made Top 8 at Mid-Atlantic Regionals with his ultra-tech Sligh four-of against D5CU (and El Nino(Wind/Wall))......Chaos Charm. (Look it up)

Mine was likely a few years ago, when me and my team decided to BigMac's transmute.dec (transmute artifact into fat). I couldn't find my Jester's Cap which I wanted to play in the main board, so I decided to run the random Eon Hub from my sideboard (which had only just came out back then) in the main, and ended up facing Oath three times that day. It was quite legendary. First round, game one, I Transmuted (or possibly just Tinkered) into Eon Hub on turn two. The guy actually read the card three times over, looked at me if I were insane, and, well, lost.

My current Stuffy Doll tech in the sideboard of Rakdos to combat CoP Red and Ivory Mask (at the same time nonetheless!). It blows out control decks too, since they actually can't attack with Urza's Factory tokens or Teferi while it's down. I actually can't think of anything that I really blew me away as a really solid sideboard card. Most of the stuff has been limited tech designed to catch the opponent by surprise. If the opponent could possibly suspect it was coming, it would have been completely ineffective. Of course, that's really the point of secret tech.

Kind of Janky, but in a nonpowered tournament back in the day, someone used Jeweled Amulets in MonoB Dragon for turn 2 kills. No one saw that coming. I think this is the best because they really had to think outside the box on that one.

One of the most memorable examples of tech that I can remember was 2 or so years ago when Control Slaver was just starting to get really popular and then Rich Shay owns up Waterbury with three Lavadart maindeck, a card I don't think anyone expected or probably even heard of at that time.

I'm going to post this one for a guy I know who needs to get an account here:
These two guys were having a battle in a local Type 1 no proxy scene (so Legacy with Sol Rings) using MBC and Goblins. Weekly my monoblack friend would lose to Goblins as they just overwhelmed his creature destruction and defenders. Every week he brought in 15 cards against Goblins. It would be a close match and luck would decide the winner. The next week the Goblins player would have answers. Ball Lightnings, Echoing Decays, Guerilla Tactics, Ostracizes, everything concievable saw play at one point or another.
One week MBC brought four Engineered Plagues and stomped Goblins flat, finally. The next week, Goblins had the ultimate tech. Not splashing white or green for Disenchant and Naturalize, no, too pedestrian. No, it was so much better:
Goblin Caves.
GG, my friends. GG.
Thanks to Justin Dewey for this story and so many others.

In early 2005 when everyone was playing Control Slaver (Right after HiVal top8ed the first ever SCG in late 04 with TurboTitan) I modified the list to control titan with no slavers. The deck just butchered control. But anyways. The tech was this.
pulse of the grid
if they didn't counter it, I drew 2, discarded 1, and they chanced that I got my draw/discard outlet back. If they countered it, they had to fear that I would come back with a better spell (TFK or something) on my turn.

I really liked MUC's answer to Tooth and Nail. It would go like this:
Tooth: Tooth and Nail MUC: Twincast, get Uyo and Triskelion. Use Uyo to copy your Tooth again. Get two Mephidross Vampires. Kill you with your tooth still on the stack, thx barn.

Tee-Heee!!!! (claps hands)
There is a lot of cool stuff here!
Allright, I'll throw out another. Same timeframe, 1998-99. 5C Tradewind decks are dominant, along with Rec-Sur. Both abuse Spike Feeder and Weaver as the format is very slow outside of Burn, and lacks any combo except Pros-Bloom. And Great Whale isn't legal yet.
So (my favorite) Andrew Cuneo breaks the El Nino mirror matches with his sideboard tech... Afiya Grove. Since he could return it with the Tradewind, it basically added an additional 4 Feeders or Weavers to his deck at a lower mana cost. Highly important as Armageddon was key to these decks, especially against Rec-Sur. It also had him winning the damage race, as most times these deck would expend all of their resources insuring the opponent never had an active Tradewind. He either got bigger creatures, extra Fogs, or more lifegain.

Okay, PT: Tempest. Not Tempest block, just Tempest. Now, Sligh looks pretty good in this format, with Jackal Pup, Mogg Fanatic, and tons of burn. So, everyone tests their deck against Sligh, discovers that Bottle Gnomes trumps the whole deck, and moves on. Everyone, that is, except Dave Price. He finds the ultimate anti-gnomes technology: Giant Strength. Instead of being an unstoppable wall and a life buffer, Bottle Gnomes is now fog + healing salve. And, since all the direct damage in the format does 2 points, Giant Strength isn't even card disadvantage vs other creature decks. Due to this technology, Dave won the PT.

Andy Stokinger two extended seasons ago had a rock deck, in it he had Sliver Queen.
He would Burning Wish for Coalation Victory and cast it, then mark it down on the card. It had like 150 marks on it.
Not sure if it's tech, but certainly entertaining!

I played him at D4D2 and he had a singleton in the main of Rec-Sur to Enlightened Tutor up. He's not quite up to 150 yet. (I had no idea who he was when I played him. I was looking through my match history later and doing reading on the internet...) My absolute favorite tech is a variant of this: I really liked MUC's answer to Tooth and Nail. It would go like this:
Tooth: Tooth and Nail MUC: Twincast, get Uyo and Triskelion. Use Uyo to copy your Tooth again. Get two Mephidross Vampires. Kill you with your tooth still on the stack, thx barn. Both MUC and U-Tron were running this tech. At Dutch(?) Nationals, Frank Karsten goes around to all his qualified friends at the event frantically borrowing Twincasts. He ended up with 16 and played zero. All his T&N opponents figured he was running it in the board and tried to play around it.

When I added Stormscape Apprentice, True Believer, Kataki, War's Wage, and Voidmage Prodigy to UW Fish.
Spectral Shift vs. Boil in the Mono-Blue matchup vs everything. (At some FNMs I played in, every non-Mono Blue deck splashed for Boil, including mono-green, Tooth and Nail, BG death cloud, in addition to all of the decks that were already red. Some affinity players boarded Boil, but Shift couldn't board in in that matchup.)
In the same format, someone I knew played Unforge to kill Troll Ascetic equipped with Sword of Fire and Ice.

Fusilade + Time Vault Like when It was Rich Shay vs. Myself in a top 8 at Virginia, Shay had the game next turn and I had a Time Vault out, I went to my turn and lightly tapped my deck and fusilade ran all the way to the top. My jaw dropped and I lit him up. Then next game he slaved me with a Time Vault out.
