Topic says it all. We did this last year; no reason to break the tradition! Discuss. I need to see a comprehensive list of what even came out this year before I can even make a top 5, which probably means that it was bad bad year for me, movie-wise.

[EDIT] OK, I checked what came out in The Netherlands this year. Apparently, I saw 47 movies in the cinema this year, and this is my tentative list:

1. The Departed (brilliant, largely thanks to Jack)
2. Perfume - Story of a Murderer (I hope you get this in the States...literary classic made into awesome movie by the guy who did Lola Rennt)
3. Babel (gripping)
4. An Inconvenient Truth (imporant film, regardless of criticism)
5. P1rates of the Caribbean II (p1rates are just awesome)
6. Zwartboek (very good Dutch WWII movie)
7. Fearless (pretty)
8. Casino Royale (best Bond flick ever, or, IMO, first *good*  Bond flick ever)
9. Miami Vice (your're so gonna shoot me down over this, but I loved it)
10. Flushed Away (easily the best in a horrible series of animated films this year)

Yet to see but probably awesome:

- The Illusionist
- The Prestige

Huge disappointments:

- The Da Vinci Code
- Deja Vu
- X-men 3
- Superman Returns
- Snakes on a Plane
- The Black Dahlia

- The Prestige

This was one of the best movies I have seen in years. It's hard to comment too much with out giving everything away, but suffice it to say, sooooo good.

Ok, I checked the resease dates for this year and this is what I saw:

Underworld: Evolution - Kate Beckinsale is hot.  Other than that, this was rather uninteresting.
Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story - This movie was brilliant.  I highly recommend it if you have an interest in film.
The average viewer might not get it though.
Firewall - Eh, alright, but uninspired and the technology could get absolutely preposterous at times.
Ultraviolet - Second worse movie I've ever seen, only beating out Manos.  It's only redeeming features were Milla
Jovovich's magnificent torso and the laughs from how bad it was.
V for Vendetta - Spectacular.  A great translation from the graphic novel, Natalie Portman was great, and Hugo
Weaving did a truly remarkable job acting from behind a mask.
Lucky Number Slevin - I saw this one largely because of the cast, and I enjoyed it for the same reason.  I found it
to be fairly clever.  I recommend renting it.
Hard Candy - Wow, this movie was great, if uncomfortable at times.  I highly recommend watching this if you get a
                               chance.
The Sentinel - A HUGE disappointment.  Pass.
Mission: Impossible III - Good for what it was.  Nothing to write home about.
The DaVinci Code - Alright.  A passable translation of the novel.  If you liked the novel, you'll like the film.
An Inconvenient Truth - Really jarring.  It really shows the magnitude of the problem we're facing with respect to
climate change, whether you believe we're responsible for the warming or not.
X-Men: The Last Stand - San Francisco goes from mid-afternoon to night in about 5 seconds.  I needn't say more.
Strangers With Candy - Hilarious.  A good rental.
Superman Returns - I really liked this.  I thought it did about as good a job as you can do of creating conflicts for a
man who is, essentially, invincible. Kevin Spacey, as usual, was spectacular.
Ninjas of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - This doesn't stand on its own very well. It's definitely a middle movie,
and as part of a trilogy, it's fine.  On its own it's a mass of fan
service and "LOOK AT ME!" special effects.
A Scanner Darkly - I'm a sucker for interesting cinematography, which is what drew me in, but this was also an
interesting movie about what happens when the drug war goes too far.  Keanu Reeves once
again finds a roll where his "acting" style (or lack thereof) actually works for the roll.
Clerks II - A sequel to Clerks.  It's Clerks again.  Different setting, same stuff.  If you like Clerks, you'll like this.
Little Miss Sunshine - A really sweet and funny movie.
The Illusionist - The story isn't anything original, but the execution is great.  Edward Norton is great as usual.
Snakes on a Plane - Unlike Bram, I actually loved this movie.  It was obviously exactly what I expected and I look
forward to picking this up on DVD Tuesday.
Crank - I didn't go in expecting much from this, but it turned out to be really fun.  I liked it a lot.
Jet LI's Fearless - It's all the awesome you've come to expect from Jet Li without the annoying Hip Hop.
The Departed - Fucking amazing.  An all-star cast with a great director and a good story.  But you already know this
is good. By this time you've heard it from EVERYONE.
The Prestige - This was really good.  Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman play off each other well, and the story is a
great one about the costs of obsession.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - Hilarious. Simply hilarious.
Casino Royale - The first good Bond movie since Goldeneye.  Craig is really good as Bond, and the script didn't suck.
The only thing I missed was Q.  It would have been nice if the game was the Bond classic of
Baccarat, but that would have been less interesting to watch.
The Good Shepherd - I just saw this today.  It was ridiculously good.  I'm not sure because I haven't finished
mulling it over yet, but this is quite possibly the best movie I've seen out of this year's releases
                             so far.  See this.

There are still a few releases I haven't been able to see, and hope to.  Namely, The Good German, Children of Men, The Fountain, District B13, The Protector, and Curse of the Golden Flower.

Fearless was the only really "good" movie I saw this year. And yes I saw most of those already listed.

Ninjas of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

I must have missed that one....sounds pretty awesome! Hooray for word filters Wink

I totally forgot about both Fearless and Casino Royale; they will be edited into my list. Also, Munich, Syriana, Walk The Line and Jarhead came out in early 2006 here, but they're technically 2005 movies (and good ones at that) so they're not in my list.

Some more movies that don't really make the cut, but which I found surprisingly OK:

- Hellbent (Gay slasher pic...new genre?)
- The Wicker Man (Everyone hated this for some reason but me)
- Open Water 2: Adrift (OK, it's not a brilliant movie, but it's just so smart to make such a movie budget wise. Limited cast, one filming location....it's like Cube, only bad. But nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It certainly had its moments)
- Click (I expected a "classic" Sandler film, but got one that was actually funny and at times even a little moving. How strange.)

Fearless and Casino Royale were savage. The Departed may of been the best remake I've seen for a film in a long damn time. It's rare when a remake can match even an average original film; the fact that The Departed was as good as, arguably better than, Infernal Affairs is a real testament to how to do a good -film-. And it's a fucking remake. If only all remakes could be so good... sigh.

In list form, movies that didn't suck:
Monster House (like the only good CG movie of the year)
Fearless
Children of Men (I was skeptical when all I read were positive review, but was pleasantly surprised that it actually was a good film)
Casino Royale
The Departed
V for Vendetta
Borat
The Protector (You see this movie to watch people get their shit handed to them. On that level is succeeds beautifully.)

For foreign films:
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (It came out in late December 05, hence it won a bunch of awards this year, hence I'll count it)
Death Note (A great thriller even if you know the twists, amazing if you don't)
Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society
Inland Empire

Movies that will probably be on my list after I see them:
The Last King of Scotland
The Pristege
Honey & Clover
Nana
Whichever really awesome Korean movie JP tells me to watch

Movie that I won't see, but everyone tells me was excellently done.
United 93

Guilty Pleasure
Rocky Balboa

V for Vendetta was the only movie I was thankful for seeing in theaters.  I hated a lot of movies this year.

I saw Click a couple months ago.  I was also pleasantly surprised.  I was expecting a trashy Sandler movie and it was actually really well done.

The Ringer was a stupid movie, but it was really funny.  Maybe I just hate retards.

World Trade Center was quite good.
It's a completely non-political film by Oliver Stone about 2 firemen.

Click surprised me as well, but it was only average.

And I hated bond. I thought the plot and pacing were screwed up and the new bond guy just acts like a chump.

STFU!

He is BOND! JAMES BOND!

He got hit in the NutSack 20 times and still never gave in.

He's an inspiration to us all!

And he gave a $1,000,000 tip to some extra.  What a stud!

QFT. The Good Shepherd is the best movie I've seen this year. The Departed was pretty good too, but Jack Nicholson's histrionics were lame.

On behalf of Smmenen:

Quote from: Smmenen
This site, every year, puts up a list of each movie released during the year.   I use this to remind myself of every film I’ve seen.   So, I’ll post every film I saw this year first:

http://www.thestinkers.com/2006releases.html

All the King's Men (9/22/06)
Apocalypto (12/8/06)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (11/3/06)
Brick (3/31/06)
Casino Royale (11/17/06)
Clerks II (7/21/06)
CSA: The Confederate States of America (2/15/06) |
The Da Vinci Code (5/19/06) |
Dave Chappelle's Block Party (3/3/06)
The Departed (10/6/06) |
Final Destination 3 (2/10/06)
Flags of Our Fathers (10/20/06)
A Good Year (11/10/06)
Inside Man (3/24/06)
Lady Vengeance (It was released here in the US in 06)
Miami Vice (7/28/06)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (7/7/06)
The Prestige (10/20/06)
Saw III (10/27/06)
A Scanner Darkly (7/7/06)
Shortbus (10/13/06)
Superman Returns (6/28/06)
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (8/4/06)
Thank You for Smoking (3/17/06)
X-Men: The Last Stand (5/26/06)

Movies I want to see, but have not yet seen:

Babel
Bobby
United 93
Rocky
Dreamgrils
An inconvienient Truth
Jesus Camp
The Last King of Scotland
Letters from Iwa Jima (not yet released)

Here was my top 10 list from 2005: http://smmenen.livejournal.com/33821.html

With that in mind, here are my top movies of the year.

1) BORAT

The funniest film of the year and the best movie of the year.   If you thought this movie was funny, then how the in hell could it not make your top ten list?  And if it made your top ten list, how could it not make your top pick of the year?   This movie is unforgettable.  I laughed so hard I almost puked in the theatre.

2) Thank You For Smoking

3) All The King’s Men

4) Lady Vengeance

5) The Departed

6) CSA: Confederate States of America by Spike Lee

7) Shortbus

8) A Good Year

9) Apocalypto (Yes, I enjoyed this film)

10) Casino Royale

Movies I thought were EXTREMELY overrated:

1) Brick.  Ugh.  Piece of Shit

2) Talladega Nights.  Ugh.  Not funny.

3) The Prestige
Yes this movie was entertaining, but it was not worth putting into top 10 lists.

All in all, this was a pretty weak year.

I totally agree with Steve this year in movies was weak. Also: Steve's list reminded me of how much I hate the fact that The Netherlands' release dates tends to lag two months or more behind. I still need to see half the stuff on that list because it hasn't come out yet. As to Borat - I haven't seen that because I'm a moron. I totally wanted to, and it completely slipped my mind. Oh well, there's always DVD.

By the way: moved to Basic User Community so that others can join in on the fun!

After a lot of thinking, I realized I have only seen one movie this year, which was Flicka. It was the lady's choice, of course.

Even she, a horse lover, did not like the movie. It's awful. I doubt any of you ever were considering seeing it, but if you were, just say no.

1. Ninjas of the Caribbean.  I <3 ninjas (and the word filter).  And Keira Knightly.  I loved that movie.  Saw it at midnight on opening night and went back the next day.

2. Scoop.  Scarlet Johansson=HOT!!!  Hugh Jackman and Woody Allen were hilarious.

3. Saw III.  I like the Saw movies.  Sorry

4. Casino Royale.  I love Bond.  It was one of the best Bond movies there was.  Wish it had a hotter Bond girl though.

5.V for Vendetta.  I was leary about going to it because the trailers didn't appeal to me.  I was very surprised and loved it.

I thought P1r4t3z of the Caribbean II was pretty mediocre...It was the same exact movie as the first one, except with like crazy Central American people instead of skeleton pirates (and p1r4t3z, too).

The Illusionist, Fearless, Casino Royale, and the Good Shepherd were pretty much the only good movies of 2006, that I've seen.  I still need to see the Departed, Lucky Number Slevin, and the Prestige.

I must add that Eragon is the worst movie I've ever seen ever.  Even my younger brother thought it was awful, and he likes everything.

I enjoyed the books, and I HATED the movie.  After it was over, I sat there in the theater in near shock for like 10 minutes.  My gf and a couple other friends were discussing the movie, they asked me what I thought, and I literally just yelled.  RAAAAAAAAARRRGH!!!!  I was so dissapointed, because it could have been an amazing movie, but instead, they rushed it out the door for the holiday season, and it showed.

From Steve's site, what I've seen this year, some of the better ones being bolded:

<A Ton of Movies>

Anyway, I watch a lot of movies.

You saw 107 movies in the theatre this year?

That's over 2 movies a week and probably $900 this year on the movie tickets alone....

Well done sir.

Some weeks more than others, and not all in theaters.  My girlfriend worked at Blockbuster for a part of this year, which helped a lot.  Still, I racked up over 500 points on my Regal card this year.

Ultraviolet was the worst movie that I've ever seen, and I've seen Manos.

Snakes on a Plane is fun if you see it with a bunch of people that think that they're at a midnight screening of Rocky Horror.  The second time that I saw it, the theatre was pretty subdued until me and my friends started hissing or yelling things, at which point everyone started to loosen up and get into the carnival atmosphere.

Ultraviolet was the worst movie in god knows how long.

That movie was awesome!

Bodycount of 300 or so? Plus something like a plot?

It seemed to be in the AEon Flux line of movies: Computers make cool things possible, and at LEAST they still make sci-fi movies still!  I remember a time when there WEREN'T new sci-fi movies every year!

Worst Movie This Year: (that I've seen): Wicker Man. 2 out of 10.

It would have been 1 out of ten, but I did not actually get out of my chair, and turn the movie off, vetoing my sister.

It was two hours of my life that I can't get back, but at least it wasn't actual torture.

That was how I saw it, and it was great.

I pretty much have to agree with Steve's assessment of Borat. Aside from those two movies, nothing this year really stood out.

Also, how on earth did people like Eragon the book?

I did not enjoy Borat.  Yes, it was funny.  No, it was not the be-all, end-all of comedy for me (Then again, I'm generally unimpressed with much of Family Guy's humor, so take it for what you will).  And no, I wasn't really offended by it, so rule that one out.   Maybe if I watch it again I'll like it better (that's what happened with Anchor Man), but for now, it's in my Over-hyped category.

The Eragon books weren't too bad for a light read.  Nothing groundbreaking, but not too bad.

Here's my list of the best of 2006:

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift- An amazing insight into Japanese youth culture, approached with the wide-eyed wonderment that all Americans would show if they were in Tokyo. Excellent plot, groundbreaking acting and the sets and scenery was impressive.

Hostel- a superb documentary on the problems of Eastern Europe and the involvement of Americans in its crime-run economy. A must-see for travellers in the region.

Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector- A lighthearted and witty comedy about how an honest country man adapts to life in the city and the culture shock that comes from it. Stands up to repeat viewings.

National Lampoon's Pledge This!- With up-and-coming actress Paris Hilton making an innovative appearance in this movie as a sultry ingenue, you won't want to miss this comedy from the makers of Van Wilder.

Who Killed the Electric Car?- It was kind of grating to sit through and I suppose it's worth seeing, but there are better films. It is, however, no Mean Girls. Watch this for your "intellectual" quotient, but I warn you, this movie is VERY difficult to masturbate to.

I have not, however seen Terror Toons.

Here is the shining example of how Ultraviolet was terrible: I couldn't even enjoy it as a mindless action movie because it would show here surrounded by like a dozen guys, and then cut to her walking away with a pile of bodies behind her.  It doesn't even give us the mindless action, so how are we supposed to enjoy it as mindless action?

Also, Happy Feet was SO WEIRD.  I don't know what to think about it.

You're serious? I thought it was terrible compaired to F&TF and 2F2F. The cars are alright but the girls aren't and I think the accent of the main character is just horrible! I just don't like it... and I didn't even mention that lame appearance Vin Diesel made Razz

I enjoyed P1rates Ninja's of the Caribbean, Casino Royal and Babel in no particular order.
