Yeah, these lists are really cool. I somehow never thought of putting Sundering Titan in 5c Ichorid, even though it's a basic theory that Cerebral Assassin had used a while back. Damn me! I hope to see more good results for Cody Vinci's Drain Tendrils list too. That deck is pretty sweet.
Happy New Year everyone! Let's make it as interesting as 2006 was.

I went to this tourney with 2 other NC guys and we had a great time. Thanks for to the SC crew for hosting this event. Here's a brief report of what I played against:
I finished in 2nd place (4-0-1 and 1st after swiss) and got an Italian Drain. BigP and EJ (the guys I drove with) were in it until the last round but both lost in the last round.
Round 1: Oath Win: 2-1 Overall: 1-0
Round 2: Control Slaver Win: 2-1 Overall: 2-0
Round 3: The Mountains Win Again (with black) Win: 2-0 Overall: 3-0
Round 4: 5-Gush Tog Intentional Draw Overall: 3-0-1
Round 5: Gifts Win: 2-0 Overall: 4-0-1
I get paired down in round 5 and play it out to maximize the chances of BigP and EJ getting in the top 8. I beat him and he still makes top 8 with a record of 2-2-1 and we play again in the top 8.
Top 8: Gifts Win: 2-0 Overall: 5-0-1
Top 4: U/W Feinstein-style Fish Win: 2-0 Overall: 6-0-1
Finals: Ichorid Loss: 0-2 Overall Matches: 6-1-1 (ID) Overall Games: 12-4-0
I expect to always lose to Ichorid. It's a terrible terrible matchup and I don't feel like it's popular enough right now to dedicate board slots specifically to it (more Tormod's Crypts or Leylines). Hopefully, other decks will keep it in check. If it does gain popularity... I will need to make some changes.

I just can't believe that fathom seer was in a top 8....that card just plain sucks. Getting 2 cards at sorcery speed, for 3 mana, while bouncing all your lands somehow just dosn't seem all that broken to me.
Personally i think it won of the heavy disruption and confidants.

Fathom Seer makes Tog +6/+6, when you can just attack for the win it does not matter if you bounce all your lands.

"After these years of arguing I've conceded that Merchant Scroll in particular can be an exception to this rule because it is a card that you NEVER want to see in multiples, under any circumstances. Merchant Scroll can be seen as restricted in a way because should you have 2 in a hand, only one is really useful (that is, only one can get Ancestral)."

Brandon Todaro's list misses one sideboard slot. Ichorid list's sideboard: 7x Mountain???? Thanks to everyone who came out to this event. I was the TO and we were trying to get a deck together as quick as possible for a friend, so we just threw some mountains in the sideboard so he'd have 15 cards. To find out a more updated decklist and more detailed tournament results... Check out our site - in Tourney Results and T1 Section www.tappedoutgames.com/forumsThanks, Chi

I admit that fathom seer is slow and ya it is sorcery speed to play the creature. George, myself and the rest of shake and bake are known for trying something different and trying to make cards from new sets see play in vintage. Its called INNOVATION. The idea of the deck is not to drop the fathom seer as soon as possible and flip it immediately. It is something that you can burn your drain mana in and it provides great tempo late in the game. Drawing extra cards has always been a good game plan in our book. I got the same response about our izzet contol deck and how much izzet guildmage sucks, the combo takes too many lands, etc. We are not out there saying that fathom seer is a format changing card but we just like to show up to tourneys with something new that no one has seen before. I think that the element of surprise is a huge factor in many of the recent vintage performacnes. I did notice that in a aggro/ichorid heavy meta game this deck will almost always lose. I knew that charleston's meta is always different. There are people there that always play the same deck and there is everyone else who is completely unpredictable. So I went with my gut and put together a SB that has a lot of fun abuseing drain mana. I also must comment that when i did get matched up with aggroish deck fathom seer can be a great card to just hardcast. He is a 1/3 and he can keep your opponent from setting up a lock with dimir cutpurse, he kills savannah lions, bob, erayo, and other 1 toughness fishy creatures. You can also kill the 2/2s by dropping the fathom seer as a morph stacking the damage and flipping your fathom seer. Overall I am pleased with my performance and I think I will play the deck again with some minor changes.
Thanks Brandon

Cody is there any reason that you don't run a Basic Swamp in your deck. I realize that the deck is close to Mono Blue and it only needs the Swamps for when it is going to win the game. It seems like there might be times that you want to cast an early Vampiric Tutor or Demonic Tutor but also have to play around Wastes. This would require a small change to the fetch base but that is hardly an issue. I would probably due something like -1 Underground Sea +1 Swamp. I suppose there may be a small number of games where drawing it early hurts you but that seems like it wouldn't occur very often since you run a fair amount of lands.

Sorry if it sounded like i was trying to flame you, i just don't see this card being anywhere near playable. ....And i'd personally hate wasting Drain mana on this guy. I actually liked the izzet guildmage deck Although i never got around to actually play the thing. /Zeus

Have you tried out Fathom Seer with Illusionary Mask? I have tested them in my UB Mask Deck and it worked pretty fine so far. Under a Mask every Fathom Seer is an uncounterable 1/3 Body that lets you draw two cards for two colorless mana. Its not fantastic as Mask is strong without the Seer, but it is a nice addition as the Seer also work on its own.

While true, if you were playing a creature for 2U, you just play Trinket mage and tutor up a Dreadnought.

The reason I don't run a basic swamp is because it may be in my opening hand (I already have a ton of dead cards I don't want to draw in my opening 7), I don't want to draw it late game when I may need an additional blue source to cast spells, it doesn't work with Gush, it puts me a turn behind on drain mana or casting spells at EOT with drain mana up, and I only have 2 polluted deltas (kidding, however true). I still have not tested this since the last time someone asked me, but I really don't see any reason to right now. The only matchup that I feel is not in my favor or very close to 50:50 is Ichorid, and a swamp does nothing to improve that matchup. Hetherington's Gifts list runs the same black spells than me except I run 1 more Tendrils, and he does not have a swamp (I understand Gifts runs red too). I don't think a swamp is going to break enough games to counter its negatives. I am almost positive I will lose a great deal more games off mulliganing/having a swamp when I need an Island/not being able to Gush/not being able to Drain, etc. than I will from maybe sometimes being able to avoid a wasteland if I can fetch out a swamp. I can't remember ever losing a game with this deck and thinking "that wasteland really busted this game open, I wish I had a basic swamp."

While true, if you were playing a creature for 2U, you just play Trinket mage and tutor up a Dreadnought.
Trinket cost one more than Seer, can't be used under a mask and so can be countered and the Nought costs another one mana. I prefer drawing the Nought than cost intensive search for it. Seer but more effectively Dark Confidant gives you you exactly this drawing capacity. Anyway, this leads to far, I just wanted show taterbeme some other uses for the seer and didn't want to start a discussion on Mask decks.
