I am using daze in one of my decks i wanted to know a ruling for a play i thought of.

Player 1 has a island in play and daze in hand.

Player 2 plays strip mine

Player 2 sacrifices strip mine targeting island

Player 1 in response casts daze returning the island to his hand ... daze fizzles

Is this legal, comments are appreciated.

You need a target with Daze. If another spell is on the stack, including your own, while he activates Strip Mine, then yes. If there are no spells on the stack, you cannot cast Daze at all. However, spells like Gush or Ensnare, which don't target, can be cast anytime to save lands from Stripping/Wastelands.

Daze says "Counter something unless they pay 1"

player 2 didn't play a spell (daze target) so you can't play Daze.

you can, however, float a Blue Mana for say, Brainstorm, but the alternative casting cost of Daze requires bouncing an Island when you play Daze, which is response to a spell (or an ability on the stack, where a spell is already liikely is...)

No matter what, Daze doesn't counter Strip Mine's activated abilities.

you can "Daze" your Island by casting another spell (Brainstorm, Gush, Disenchant, etc) and pay the 1 estra for Daze to save your Island from said Strip Mine.

I like how you list Gush as a potential Daze target there, when it is fully capable of saving the Island on its own.

Anyway, you can't play targeted spells or abilities without a target, which means you cannot Daze "nothing".
