I made the elimination rounds, I was technically already intop 8... now I have to take a step back and risk the at least $100+ prize and battle for a playmat.

Even if it was the old format you STILL would have had to play this round.  So you did not have to play any more rounds than you normally would have for a Waterbury since it used to cut to top 16.  Now, if it was only cut to 8--yes, you played an extra round but that's not the case.  I think we can all agree that getting screwed out of top8 on tiebreakers when you go x-1-1 blows more than any other option.  I'm not sure why you think you played an extra round--you didn't.  The other 7 people just played one less than they would have in past Waterburies.

I think you're the one who's looking at this the wrong way. Instead of comparing it to past Waterburies, look at this tournament by itself. Dave and I both had to play one more round than was required by the other players who made the cut.

Well, let's look at the options.

2 of the people play an extra round.  All X-1-1 have a chance to win power.  Tiebreakers determine who, if anyone, might play to not get owned out of power.  All X-0-2 get powre.
Cut to top 16.  All X-1-1 make it in.  Some X-2 make it in.  All must play for the top8 slots and power.  High chance of NUMEROUS X-1-1 getting owned out of power.  High chance of X-0-2 getting owned out of power.
Cut to top 8.  Chance that X-1-1 gets completely owned on tiebreakers and doesn't have any chance to get power.  Sucks that your opponents sucked it up.  Completely out of your hands.  All X-0-2 get power.

It seems to me that the best chance for someone who went X-1-1 to get power, and have 0 chance of someone getting COMPLETELY owned by tiebreakers, would be option number 1.

Personally, I think option 1 sucks the most.  Going X-1-1 and not even having a chance to get power blows.  Option 2 is what Waterbury was before, but the downside that numerous X-1-1s  and X-0-2s were getting knocked out of power was realized and this downfall was minimized with the new system.

On another note--a teammate of mine got 15th and would have been able to have a chance for power under the old system.  I don't think X-2 deserves a shot at the power and think the new system is a great idea and would love to see SCG implement it.

Once again Dave, another great tournament report as a fellow fish player (actually I am Lorenzo's friend : ) ) i find your reports extremely useful. I wasnt able to post your results though coming against a pitch long deck in round 4 wrecked me. Prior to that i played 3 bomberman decks in a row (beating 2 of them loosing one to a top deck war) I was doing well in the free mana drain tournment until i came up against Dan Yarington and his The Mountain Wins Again deck. I hope you continue to play the deck. I will continue playing it because i don't have the money to play much else  Wink .
