It was Thres from what I heard. Gro=the deck that runs non-Thres creatures. Grow refers to Thres.

Just a personal quip here, but it's Thresh; not "Thres." Note the 'h.' Grazi.

Technically, Thres is just as functional an abbreviation as Thresh. Besides, 6 letters is SO many compared to 5. But yea, happy if I call it Not-Quite-Gro?

Well, just think how it sounds. Thres. Thresh. I don't know how to notate that with the IPA, but I think you get my point. Smile

I scrubbed hard on day 2. I went 1-2 drop, and then lost to Elves in the Side Event. I need to stop playing Affinity I guess.

Elias got 16th with some Japanese Tog list on Day 2. Jeff lost to Boros (not the greatest Boros player ever) in top 2 or top 4 (I can't remember).

It was still an awesome event, probably not worth travelling like 7hrs (and getting a speeding ticket coming back home), but it was fun. Props to Ray for awesome prize support. And to Elias and Jeff and everyone else being awesome.

Oh, and unban Travis.

What's a "japanese tog" deck?

A list that the Japanese made? Elias can share it or whatever. The day 1 tog list is pretty weird. 2 Fof, 3 Brainstorm, big lols.

I'm definitely the scrub that knocked out Elias of day 1 in round 2.

Top 8:

Zach Tartell with Enchantress
Bryant Cook with TES
Hatfield with Aluren
Dave Price with RGBSA
James Mankins with Blue Skies
Brandon Lepage with 4c Grow
Anwar with Red Death
Kyle Dorgan with Psychatog

Enchantress lost to TES in the semifinals.

Zach Tartell with Enchantress   VS.  Bryant Cook with TES  (didn't watch this one).

Hatfield with Aluren  VS.  Dave Price with RGBSA 2-1  Game Notes:  Price rips the nuts discard + resolves Survival game 1. Price finds next to nothing game 2.   In a ridiculous game 3, Price finds the nuts discard, but no Survival or good creatures, forcing Alix Hatfield to start beating down with his guys.  Price is at 1 life some 2 or 3 different times as he finds a Baloth and Witness to stave off dying to a Raven Familiar and takes it when he eventually finds FTKs (I might be a little mistaken here and there on some of these).

James Mankins with Faerie Stompy/Skies (?  It featured Sea Drakes, SoFIs, Cloud of Faeries, Serendib's and FoWs)  VS.  Kyle Dorgan with Psychatog 2-0  Game Notes:  Game 1, Kyle on the play, land go.  James, Mox Diamond, Ancient Tomb/CoT, Sea Drake, FoW, FoW back.  Kyle "Okay...".  Turn 2, land go.  James, Sea Drake number 2.  Turn 3, land, Vedelkan Shackles for the win.  Game 2, something similar.

Brandon Lepage with 4c Grow   VS.   Anwar with Red Death  (didn't wath this one)

Top 4:

Brandon Lepage with 4c Grow  VS.  Kyle Dorgan with Psychatog 2-1 Game Notes:  Kyle just has the better deck in games 1 and three, and does things like bait Counterspell with FoF at EOT, let it get countered, and then main phase resolve Deed and blast it for 2 to wipe out Bear, Goose, and Needle naming Wasteland (with Wasteland and Loam in the graveyard) and wreck from there, steal Meddling Mages and Werebears with Shackles, resolve Intuitions for Loams and uncounterable draw engines, and Wish for Corpse Dance with Tog having been dredging into his graveyard.

Bryant Cook with TES 2-1  VS.  Dave Price with RGBSA.   Game Notes for game 1 (I didn't watch the rest of the match).  Price gets his discard going, and Cook has 2 CoB's that eat his life along with the Plunges.  He makes a grand total of 4 Goblin tokens at one point I think.  I'm pretty sure he lost game 1 because of going to something like 3 life from the Cities and Plunges and having no hand, I could be wrong about him losing game 1.  Cook pulls it out though, I was more interested in the other T4 match.

Finals:

Bryant Cook with TES 2-1  VS.  Kyle Dorgan with Psychatog 2-1

Didn't watch this.  From what I heard Kyle made a misplay with Duress in game 3 taking a tutor instead of an LED that allowed Bryant to explode.

DAY 2 Top 8.  (Less notes here).

Jesse Hatfield with Thresh/R + Counterbalance  VS.  RW/b Deck Wins

Shane Flanigan with RWG/b Chrome Mox Aggro 2-1  VS.  Goblins/g
Game Notes:
Goblins leads with Vial.  Shane makes a 2/3 Ape.  Driver.  Swing with Ape, end step Vial in Lackey into SGC (misread on Shane's part).  G2, turn 1 Silver Knight (or some such)?  Turn 2 Rancor.  GG.  G3.  Shane's so far unseen black-splash shows up with a Swords, 3 lands and 2 Plagues in the opener.  No Wasteland?  Confidant sticks on the board with Jitte?!

Enchantress  VS.  Cody Mannion with Goblins/g

Jeff Folinus with Goblins/w 2-1(?)  VS.  Matt Abold with Survival.  Matt claims to have made a serious game error in game 3 involving an Aether Vial he neglected to roll up.

T4:

RW/b deck wins 2-1  VS.  Jeff Folinus with Goblins/w

Shane Flanigan with RWG/b Chrome Mox Aggro 2-0  VS.  Enchantress

Mulligans are had by both sides in game 1 and favors the aggro deck which Rancors up it's guy and smashes face.  Game 2 involves Shane sticking a Confidant (and several other creatures which aren't swinging due to Elephant Grass and the need for disruption as opposed to beats) to find 2 Plagues, the first names Enchantress to take out an active Argothian and the second names Pegasus to take out an active Sacred Mesa.

Finals are split.

Notably:

Day 2, Shane Flanigan knocks out Phil Stolze (T16'd GP Philly) playing 3 color Angel stompy in round 3, and Chris Coppola with mono red Goblins in round 4 (or 5) and won every single match he lost the die roll in both days (going 4-2 day 1, 10-3-1 + a split over 2 days).  Red Death continues to put Anwar into top 8's.  Prizes were awesome for top 4, but not so hot for 5-8th (something I can live with).  According to Dave Gearhart there was "like 10 affinity players day 1!"  Enchantress has now back to back to back Top 8'd 3 events (GAGG, TML 2 day 1, TML 2 day 2).  The Hatfields take a really long time to make decisions about what prizes to collect.

EDIT:

The day 1 tog list is pretty weird. 2 Fof, 3 Brainstorm, big lols.

There's really no need for more than 2 FoF here.  Intuition in this list is just better.  As you can see from the game notes (I was watching Kyle play his games as my money was on him in the Top 8, especially when Red Death got knocked out, we play in the same metagame, and I'd prefer he have a higher rating so I can steal some points from him later on before the GP) FoF got used to bait out counterspells in end step while the situational bomb that ended the game came out in the main phase to create a one sided Jokulhaups.  FoF doesn't simply win games the way it used to.

Yeah I would definitely have cut a FoF for a fourth Brainstorm. Possibly a Logic too.

Logic seems kinda odd. Was Force Spike ever considered in development? My natural inclination looking at that list would be -3 Leak -2 Logic +1 Brainstorm +3 Force Spike +1 land of some variety.

Deed is probably better than Damnation anyway, but again, was that tested?

omg need tournament report.

I can't answer these questions, I simply watched Kyle play the deck in the top 8 until I got distracted by a casual game in the finals.  Ask Dr. Teeth on the source.

Freakish: What were you playing? I didn't see any of Elias' matches day one, as I was playing too, and not losing horribly (kind of).

About the play mistake with the vial, that was kind of odd, I think he decided to cast something, instead of vialing it into play, and thus having to wait a turn to cast E.Plague, which was then too late. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There was also a pretty tricky play game 1, where Jeff had Lackey in hand, and a vial at one, and Matt casted Therapy, which Jeff did not respond to, Matt then named Lackey, and then sacked a rootwalla to Therapy.

Also, the Duress play was pretty big. I didn't really like Bryant's etiquette during the match, as I personally found him to be a little too obnoxious. I think he 0-2 dropped on day 2, as did Kyle iirc.

FoF is huge in Tog, if you play right. Like, yea you can use it to bait counters, that's great, it IS a must-counter spell the majority of the time. The damnation v Deed argument is pretty null, both are great. I really want to know how the Lftl engine worked out in Tog, as I've never ever been a fan of it, but I guess it can work.

There was alot of Affinity (Me being one of them), and some had really weird builds, like Affinity sans Vial (Still a huge mistake if you ask me).

Hello... I've been around for a while on Starcity and Mtgsalvation but i can't really find any coverage there for this tournament. So i thought i should register to this site and get talking Smile

I like the Fact that Tog made it to a high finish... my team mate and i have been looking at tog for a little while now and tinkering around with it.

Another deck i have recently taken an interest in is TES. The thing looked like a pile of jank thrown together when i first looked at it... i put the all the hype and "this thing is so good i can't believe people are still playing iggy" down to several fan boys over at the source. Now, the more i look at it, the more impressed i am.

anyway... hello to all Smile

ah yes... the whole point of me registering has been forgotten - was the TES list the standard list that can be found on the source or was there something pretty significantly different about the list?

thanks

Yeah. I did terrible at Legacy. I went 1-2 drop both days and then ended up playing in both side events. I got 2nd on the day 2 side event. I guess that was okay...

Freakish: What were you playing? I didn't see any of Elias' matches day one, as I was playing too, and not losing horribly (kind of).

I played Iggy day one, High Tide - Reset day two.  Not the right metagame calls.

I wouldn't know, all I know is that Matt was telling people after the match that he practically handed Jeff the match by making a mistake with Vial.

Quote

Kyle didn't 0-2 drop day 1.  In fact, if I'm not mistaken Bryant lost to Kyle (playing Tog again) round 1 of day 2 (his finals opponent day 1), and then proceeded to lose to Dave Price (with Survival again) round 2 of day 2 (his semi-finals opponent) making a reversal against his Top 8 opponents.  If I'm not mistaken Kyle started 2-1 or 3-1, losing to Jeff Folinus in round 3 or 4.

Quote

Sure, it's huge, I simply don't think it's huge enough when you have the power of Loam + AKs to Intuition for.

Quote
I really want to know how the Lftl engine worked out in Tog, as I've never ever been a fan of it, but I guess it can work.

Loam was beyond huge, it gave him a Loam Wasteland lock against his quarter and semi finals opponents that made his countermagic that much better, it also gave him uncounterable draw to ensure he was never in top-deck mode, and an un-ending stream of chump blockers if necessary.  I'm not sure how good it was for him through the swiss seeing as how I couldn't necessarily watch that.

Freakish too cool to watch me smash face?

Nope, just got distracted when OverLord took out his Pile deck.

I don't want to put any nail in any coffin, but I was just wondering what is the status of the list posting. I know its a long and boring task to do, but I'd like to know if there is an expected date of completion.
