2/24: Urbana-Champaign, IL – Win Becker’s Mox!

I haven’t played in a vintage tournament for almost 2 months, with none on the horizon, I decided to take matters into my own hands.  Announcing….

Becker’s 1st Mox tournament

WHEN: Saturday, February 24, 2007
           Registration starts at 11am
           Tournament starts at Noon

WHERE: Armored Gopher Games
            75 Chester St.
            Champaign, Illinois 61820

FORMAT: Vintage (Planar Chaos will be legal)

COST: $25, for up to 15 proxies

PRIZES: The prizes will vary with attendance, 1st place being a NM Mox Pearl (pic up soon). Here’s the payout schedule

Quote
10-13 people
1st = Mox Pearl (NM condition)
no further prizes

14-16
1st = Mox Pearl
2nd = Chinese Tolarian Academy
3rd = FBB Sol Ring
4th = Intuition

17-20
1st= Mox Pearl
2nd= Revised Underground Sea
3rd= Foil Yawgmoth’s Bargain
4th= Chinese Tolarian Academy

21-25
1st= Mox Pearl
2nd= FBB Underground Sea
3rd= Revised Underground Sea
4th= Foil Memory Jar
5th-8th = Player’s Choice of Intuition, Chinese Gifts Ungiven, or Goblin Welder

26-32
1st= Mox Pearl
2nd= FBB Underground Sea
3rd= Beta Wheel of Fortune
4th= Revised Underground Sea
5th-8th = Player’s Choice of Foil Yawg Bargain, FBB Sol Ring, Chinese Tolarian Academy, and Intuition x2

33-39
1st= Mox Pearl
2nd=Choice of either FBB Underground Sea or 4x Foil Dark Rituals
3rd= FBB Underground Sea or 4x Foil Dark Rituals (dependent on 2nd place’s choice)
4th= Beta Wheel of Fortune
5th= Revised Underground Sea
6th= Foil Memory Jar
7th= Foil Yawgmoth’s Bargain
8th= Chinese Tolarian Academy

If more than 40 people show up, a Black Lotus will be given away for first place! I’ll figure out the prize support at the time if needed.

I'm not to interested in pulling in much for a profit, so I decided to go with a generous prize support that is very deep. Also, the Armored Gopher has provided the venue for free! Meaning better prizes since I'm not renting the space. If all goes well, I'll have another 1 or 2 events in the next few months.

Any questions? Comments? Post or PM me and I'll get back to ASAP. I hope to see everyone within driving distance there.

-Eric Becker

I'll be in attendance, provided I can find a way to get down there and I don't have anything to do for school.

This thing is in less than a week, and I still don't have a way to get there. Anyone coming from Chicago or north and willing to pick me up along the way? I'll pay for a share of the gas, naturally.

This tournament is still on.

I received a PM from Seraphim3577, who's looking to car pool with anyone from the Bloomington IL area. If anyone is interested in doing so, either PM me or him.

Since this is a new store I figured I'd try to clarify any parking problems. Heres a map of the store's location in Champaign and where you can park (the Red Star is Armored Gopher Games).

Armored Gopher doesn't have a much of a sign....so if may be a good idea to find the parking lot, then walk around to find the store.

If for any reason someone needs to contact me (ie: running late or can't find the store) here's my cell number: 815-440-5011.

Hope everything went ok.  I (and I think Fisher and Endress) had to bitch out because of the expected insane amounts of freezing rain the entire ride back.

A total of 20 people showed up, despite the terrible weather. I think everyone had a good time, specifically Team Ogre who split in the finals. Here's was the top 8 bracket.

I plan to hold a couple more events in the Champaign area before I graduate so keep an eye out for them. The next to will probably be in a slightly bigger venue. Thanks to Tim and Armored Gopher for helping out.

It would be cool to hear what people in the T8 were playing and any lists that you may have.  I'd also like to hear what decks were the most popular.

Whoa--20 people in that shitty weather.  I didn't know there was such a Type 1 scene down there.

What was played?  I'll assume Becker played the URBana fishies.

Top 8 was:

1/2 Vroman - Ubastax
1/2 Jacob Riehm (me) - PMITA man prison
3 Aaron Mclean - UBR storm
4 Blaine Christiansen (BC) - UWB vial fish
5 Becker - UW Dancing Grunts
6 Jim Erlinger (Flux) - Ichorid
7 Kevin Brewer - 5c Aggro stax
8 Justin ??? - SS with maindeck extripates

The STL contingent placed 6 of our 8 people in the top 8 (1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8)

There were 4 stax decks and a lot of gifts/storm with ETW. Overall, the tournament was pretty well run and the prize support was great. Well done Eric.
