It's not guaranteed, I don't *think* but a couple of things. First, we'll get 24, unless the mother of all Blizzards drops. Secondly, I don't think John has ever not provided the prize. Third, he generally always provides extra stuff in addition to the 100% prizes, like free entries, etc.

Come one, come all.

Is there any reason that the tournament is 5 proxy with ability to buy up to 10 proxy rather than 10 proxy with the ability to buy up to 15.  Is this a way to make a little more cash because the fee is already $25 which is high for a T1 tourny.  I realize that the entry probably needs to be $25 over $20 because it is a Beta Ancestral on the line.  There are a lot of players here in Rochester that could play if it was 10+ Proxy but can not play if it is 5+.

EDIT: It's been brought to my attention that this tourny is probably $25 Canadian so I was just being ignorant.  I still think it should be 10 proxy though.

A thing to consider: is this $25 CAN or $25 USD?

Remember guys, in non-US countries the standard tournament is in fact sanctioned.  A LOT of people have the requisite cards to play their decks.

I'm curious to know if any TMDers are going to be attending this event, so far not many people have posted.  I'm assuming this is because most of the Canadian contigent use a different site?

First, kirdape, it's $25 funny dollars. Smile So it's what, like 73c US? Razz

Ok, here's the latest update. 54 people signed up, so far. TMDers going (most likely) are Arend (specialk), Rich Mattiuzzo (shockwave), Wolfman, maybe Peter (diceman), myself, um... a few others I am sure.

With 40 people, the payout was Beta Ancestral, and $400 for 2-8. With 14 more people signed up, it should probably be over $500.

And yes, we have our own site, www.mtgontario.com, for all the events in and around toronto and ontario, and maybe even... 'quebec' (*shudder*).

Here's the link for this tournament:

http://www.mtgontario.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5636#83635

Should be a fun event, and it's tomorrow. I don't know why it's not 10-proxy, I will talk to John about it tomorrow. It's not sanctionned.

Thanks to everyone, especially the Americans, who came out to support John's event. John is certainly the most fair tournament organizer in Ontario and is almost single-handedly responsible for keeping Vintage alive in the GTA. Here was the prize structure for the event:

1st - Beta Ancestral (in almost minty condition) Richard Mattiuzzo
2nd - $250 Jeff Folinus
3rd - $125 Peter Olszewski
4th - $125 Ryan Trepanier
5th - $50 Paul Mastriano
6th - $50 Mike Antonarakis
7th - $50 Rich Hoaen
8th - $50 Lam Phan

3rd/4th and 5th-8th are in no particular order. John also ran a second, free entry, single-elimination tournament for an English Mana Drain after the Fourth Round! Alana Saulnier and Arend Kraehling split in the finals. He also gave away a set of foil Masques Counterspells as a door prize. Todd Taylor won them. I don't think you can beat that payout for a 60 man event.

Our next event in May will be for a UN Black Lotus. I invite everyone to come out again, and I'm hoping we will be able to attract players from Windsor, Michigan, and Quebec this time as well.

Thanks again to everyone for making this a success!

That's a pretty loaded top 8.  Tourney sounds like it was a good time.  Congrats on winning Shockwave.

How many people showed up?  Who played what in top 8?  I know it's early for decklists, I'm just curious as to archtypes.

4 Drain decks, 2 Long, and 2 Canadian specials rounded out the t8. I was amazed at the turnout and very appreciative of not only John's efforts to organize such an amazing event and maintain player interest, but to all of the players that made the trip from Ottawa, North Bay, various parts of the US, and any other place that I am unaware of. You all contributed to the event's success, and we hope that you will show your support in the future! I also want to thank Paul Mastriano for an amazing match, which defines exactly what magic is about - excitement, complex decisions, a struggle in every sense of the word.

Incidentally, I used Codi Vinci's Drain Tendrils deck for the event, with some slight modifications. I feel that it is an amazing deck, and wonder why we're not seeing it played more often in major events.

hey, what's up? just curious what version of DT you played? did you play with red for ETW? what modifications did you make?
I spoke briefly with Diceman about the changes he made from your list and I know that he was running 3-4 Dark Confidants and 2 Merchant Scrolls which were the main differences.  If I remember correctly he cut the 2nd Rebuild and Frantic Search for the Scrolls but I don't know what he got rid of for the Confidants.  He still had the Intuition/AK draw engine.

A great tournament, as the players above posted.  Many thanks to everybody who came out and maintained a competitive and very sportsmanlike event, as always.  It was very encouraging to get this kind of support, thanks for the compliments as well!

I'll try to get some deck lists up in the Reports and Results forum soon

I did post a tournament report, it was just an abbreviated version  Very Happy. My deck sucks anyways, I just went on a lucky run. Lam's deck is pretty shitty too, but he was equally lucky. Peter played a good deck and so did Paul. I vote for them to write tournament reports.  Wink
