I firmly believe there is nothing more satisfying than turning a huge creature sideways. Because of this, I have always been a fan of mask, and I have tried various incarnations over the years. I believe that red/black offers the strongest set of spells possible to the mask player. There have been two flaws that mask nought has always lacked, speed(you can never have too much) and threat density. Here is my recent decklist with a few ideas for additions, and help you could provide would be greatly appreciated..

Combo:16
4 Illusionary Mask
4 Phyrexian Dreadnought
4 Hunted Horror
4 Brand

Broken: 4
1 Necropotence
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Consultation

Solid: 12
4 Dark Confidant
4 Fling
4 Duress

Open slots: 4

Mana: 24
4 Dark Ritual
1 Sol Ring
1 mana Vault
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mana Crypt
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Badlands
4 Swamp
1 Mountain

Hunted Horror/Brand - I know this looks janky, but it really helps the threat density in the deck. Hunted Horror functions well either alone under a mask or with brand. This also gives you a way around null rod should it hit the board.

Here are some possibilities that I think would fit, but feel free to add anything that you think will help. I know I am light on disruption...
Magus of the Moon - Most of the combo is colorless, and this is a hoser who beats for 2.
Mass Hysteria - speeds up the combo a turn for one red mana, and no one plays bigger creatures than mask.
Cabal Therapy - With magus I think there would be enough creature base to run this card.
Leyline of the void/Planar Void - Basically every deck in vintage needs the yard

Seeing as this Combo is nowhere near what one would consider "fast" in Vintage, I think that it'd be a real good idea to use Blood Moon, or Magus, as well as more disruption to buy you some more time when trying to assemble your win.

What disruption do you have in mind, and what are your thoughts on maindeck graveyard hate?

Have you considered Mono blue masknought?
More and better disruption, aswell as more draw to help you get the combo up.
I think it would be all-over better.

Playing a mono {U} list would allow you to use outstanding disruption and protection, such as In the Eye of Chaos and the usual counter-suite.

I used top play Grow/Mask which was a G/U build that used gushes and really had no problem comboing off as quick as GaT or playing the aggro-control game with Dryads. The question is do you really want to devote eight spots in your deck to this combo when you can combo with a single Tog. It did have great consistency though in two colors and I was able to sidebaord into Oath which won me a lot of matches. Just something to consider.

You also could run Neither Void, esp because if you already have mask down (but maybe didn't have a creature) then it can delay the game until you get the creature.

I don't think you really need 4 Brand and 4 Fling.  You could probably afford some extra tutor power, or even raw draw in those slots.  Something like:

- 1 Hunted Horror
- 2 brand
- 3 fling

+ Imperial seal
+ Burning wish
+ 4 Streetwraith

*Edit: I thought brand was a sorcery ... so I'm not sure if Burning wish would be that good.  I was thinking that Brand or Final Fortune would be your wish cards - but i dunno.  Maybe leave it 2:2 on brands and fling and just an another tutor and the wraiths.

@ Harlequin I agree that more tutoring is needed, and I will probably splurge on a I-seal in place of a brand. I'm not sure about street wraith though, it seems to be either that or confidant.

As far as mono {U}, do you think that there is enough tutor power and draw blue does give you things like recall, walk, tinker, and perhaps even transmute artifact, but what draw would you suggest outside of that? Maybe Thirst?

If you go Mono-u the strategy won't always be turbo-mask, you'd have to play control most of the time....Which would make the combo less important. As for tutors, there are tinker and Trinket mage (Gets dreadnought)...There is Intuition aswell, but i don't think it's a good fit.

The thing is that turn 1 dreadnought isn't really all that fast in type 1 these days, so playing a control deck with the ability to drop a 12/12 for {3} seems like a better idea then to focus the entire deck on making a play that might not be fast enough.

Your deck reminds me of an old list of BU-MaskNought I tried in 2003:

Quote
3x Phyrexian Negator
3x Nantuko Shade
4x Dark Ritual
4x Duress
4x Hymn to Tourach
1x Demonic Consultation
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Vampiric Tutor
1x Yawgmoth's Will
4x Brainstorm
2x Stifle
1x Ancestral Recall
1x Time Walk
4x Illusionary Mask
4x Phyrexian Dreadnought

1x Mox Jet
1x Mox Sapphire
1x Strip Mine
4x Wasteland
4x Underground Sea
4x Polluted Delta
7x Swamp

This 2003 list obviously misses some of the great new cards which would be included nowadays. Especially Dark Confidant needs to be played in such a deck. Rebuilding it today I'd also insist on using the same colors, though adding another Splash might be doable.

A first idea of a 2007 rebuild of my old deck would probably look like

4x Dark Confidant
4x Dark Ritual
4x Duress
4x Unmask
1x Tendrils of Agony
1x Imperial Seal (maybe Consultation is still better?)
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Vampiric Tutor
1x Yawgmoth's Will
4x Brainstorm
2x Stifle
1x Ancestral Recall
1x Time Walk
1x Echoig Truth
4x Illusionary Mask
4x Phyrexian Dreadnought

1x Mox Jet
1x Mox Sapphire
1x Black Lotus
1x Mana Crypt
1x Strip Mine
4x Wasteland
4x Underground Sea
4x Polluted Delta
4x Swamp
1x Island

This list is less straightforward than yours, but includes solid disruption (hand destruction, land destruction) as well as ToA as a backup plan. I doubt that such a deck is competitive in modern Vintage, but it is fun to play for sure.

Moin Blitzi!

Nice to hear something from you again Wink

On topic: Just for inspiration, i played this list for a while with more less good success, but it's much more controlish. But maybe you find some inspirations from that:

Just for reference, here's the list of a Mono-Black MaskNought deck that got 3rd of (EDIT: 159) recently in Madrid.

Manuel Tardío - MaskNought- Semifinalista

Maindeck

3 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
14 Swamp
1 Mox Jet
1 Black Lotus
2 Crucible of Worlds
1 Sol Ring
2 Powder Keg
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Illusionary Mask
4 Phyrexian Dreadnought
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Duress
4 Dark Ritual
4 Dark Confidant
1 Sensei Divining Top
1 demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric tutor
1 Demonic Consultation
2 Extirpate
1 Diabolic Edict

Sideboard

4 Leyline of the Void
2 Extirpate
4 Hypnotic Specter
4 Nantuko Shade
1 Diabolic Edict

I like the Mono-Black idea; however, I think that the Mono-U version is worth checking out as well.  Perhaps some sort of hybrid?

Just some thoughts,

-Matt
