Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other

Unless you plan on typing them all out for the whole community to see, I don't think it's fair to those without Premium.  I'm not saying this because I don't have Premium and want to see the lists.  I have Premium but think that, since the lists were given to you to distribute to the community, it should be open to the public.  A thread about the tournament and what the results mean would be an excellent way to present them.  I'm not a big fan of metagame analysis in Premium articles.

Why?  Because you can't read it?  You can run your own numbers on the metagame, none of that info is priveleged and it all comes from TMD and Morphling.de and such.  However, the work Steve puts in to do that analysis is a bit more difficult, and there's no reason you should not expect it to be premium if his other stuff is.

Can you get access to enter them into the SCG Database Steve?  That would be helpful because then anyone who wants to could see them (and have them archived for posterity), and you could write a more indepth analysis of them for an article and not be withholding Ray's lists or anything as a side effect.

I think as long as the decklists are public, then it's cool. Analysis in a premium article is fine, in my opinion.

I received the entire batch of Waterbury decklists!   In the next few weeks I will type them all up.   The question is, how/where should I present them?  Should I do an article analyzing them?

Yes.  But see if you can get SCG to post them in their deck archive so they are searchable by anyone.

We'll see.   None of these decklists would have been posted had I not gotten them to put up.  I don't think that putting them up as premium for three months is a net loss, since it will take me a few hours to type them all up and at least they will be available rather than not available at all.  All premium stuff is free after three months anyway.   I haven't decided if I want to do a comprehensive article analyzing them or just post them up.   I'll figure that out in the next week.

Strongly disagree.  As long as I can recall, tournament decklists (at least the high finishers) have been seen as "public" information, and there was no indication ahead of time that they'd be treated differently now.  Had you not offered to put up the lists, someone else might have done so.  That would have been even more likely if everyone knew that the consequence of you volunteering to post the decklists would be that access would be restricted to SCG premium members only. 

If you're not comfortable putting up the lists as a public service for everyone, at least ask around to see if anyone else is willing to do that before unilaterally turning decklists into premium content where, to my knowledge, that's never been done before.  Also, decklists are most relevant in the immediate aftermath of the tournament in which they're played.  So being inaccessible for 3 months is certainly a loss to the community.

It's the same thing though, your typing up decklists. I was just giving an example of someone doing a similar amount of work for free*.

*granted, he was getting advertising for his blog by doing so.

When I'm done it will be very interesting to run some statistical analysis of the field.

Are you putting these into Excel as you go?  I'm picturing a spreadsheet with each row corresponding to a card name and each column corresponding to a competitor, with numbers of copies in each cell (so column K is a Tezzeret player, he has a value of "0" for Smokestack, "0" for Painter's Servant, "4" for Force of Will, etc.), with the same card names then repeated, having separate data points for sideboard cards.  Then have dummy variables for each competitor's placement in the tournament.  This would allow you to regress things like the prevalence of various kill conditions in decks playing Mana Drain, controlling for one another, the relationship between these kill conditions and placement, etc.

If I were doing it for a paper, I would also code all of the individual round pairings into data.  It would then be possible to run a logistical regression predicting the probability of winning a given matchup based on maindeck and sideboard hate cards.  It would be possible to mix and match controls to avoid multicollinearity between hate cards and archetypes, I think (like "Oath beats Painter" versus "Gaea's Blessing beats Painter").  Someone would have to pay me to do this, though.

Regardless of how robust the findings turn out, I'm really excited to see what results you come up with using these lists.  I have not renewed my Premium membership in a while, but based on what I hear about your analyses on this front, I might consider signing back up.

I would like to see you do this again, this time with a Jar deck, Flash, and Trinistax.  Alternatively, maybe an article where you take a couple of the controversial cards people have occasionally advocated for unrestriction, like Fact or Fiction, Enlightened Tutor, Grim Monolith, Entomb, etc., and build decks to abuse them, seeing how they fare against a gauntlet from the current meta (and maybe against each other).  Near as I can tell, though, you get both of these requests, in some form or another, pretty often.

The problem is that the older decks are completely outclassed.  I dont see Trix winning many matches, even with 4 Necros.

OK, so optimise isn't best verb here. What I mean is, to really see how broken a card is, or isn't, the only useful metric is how it would affect modern Vintage. Nobody cares that BBS dominated in 2001 or that NecroDonate was stupid in 1998, because decks are more powerful now, and cards are more powerful now. As mentioned, with Necro or Bargain, Tendrils seems like a bigger winner than Illusions/Donate. FoF might be broken in the right deck designed around it, but is BBS that deck? Is a 1995 design of a Balance deck at all representative of why Balance is still restricted?

Building new decks and running them against a gauntlet of modern Vintage decks seems to be much more useful as a tool for showing the merits, or otherwise, of the B&R list than anything else. Taking old decks and running them into each other is vaguely useful as a historical exercise, but does nothing for the B&R list.

I have a ton of potential article topics after my Conflux set review, but I was wondering if there are article ideas that you have that you'd like to suggest.  If you can't post here, feel free to PM me.   I've taken up many good article ideas before, so don't be surprised if your idea becomes an article!

While I know that you have articles that will need to produce in a specific timetable soon (namely ARB set review), I would like to suggest a series like The Past as Prologue: Extended 1999-2004 by Peter Jahn for Vintage.  While there are the year end reviews from 04 - present, there really isn't anything like that for the years prior.

I know I would pay to see all that history aggregated, I'm sure others would too.  It would also be a good way to rev up excitement in August as the 2009 Vintage Champs rolls around.
