I am trying to help a friend start off in a T1 tournament. The problem is that he doesn't have much money to put into the game. I have been trying to lend him the cards I have for a bit to make a mediocre deck but it isn't worth trying. He needs a deck taht is a good viable deck that is cheap-about $100 max. Now this is not including Original Duals and Fetches becuase I have most of those. The tournament is ten-proxy. What should I suggest to my friend as a budget deck, becuase at this point, he will play anything that is cheap and that wins.

umm...GAT

Take STeve's list -
Proxy 3 Mox (Ubg), 1 Ancestral, 1 Time Walk, 1 Lotus, 2 Mana Drains, 2 Force of Will

Cut Library from the deck - the 2 other FOWs should run about 20each.  If you'll loan him fetches and duals, he should be able to put the rest together for $60 (maybe minus the sideboard pithing needles).

That said,

This belongs in the improvement forum.

Flash is likewise pretty cheap. Proxy up the relevant power cards plus Forces, add Duals + Fetches, and the rest of the deck is a pile of junk rares, slivers, and staple blue commons/uncommons.

Manaless Ichorid is a very inexpensive 10 proxy deck and it just got third at gencon.

That said, I am not sure that it is a good deck for learning magic.  If you friend already plays another format then Manaless Ichorid might be a good choice.

Hello there, mr. cheese.

If the goal is to get a deck that is quite cheap to build and have decent shot at your T1 tournament, I do think that Oath Angel can be tried. However, it really depends on the likely participants for the said tourney. The more high powered the participants, then your friend should also try to use top decks like Flash or GaT. Oath Angel maybe is more suitable if the likely participants are using middle speed decks. At least manaless Ichorid is also quite cheap to assemble, and if your friend has already backgrounds in other formats like T2 then learning how to play the deck won't be too difficult for him. Flash, GaT, and Manaless Ichorid can be built well under the 10 proxies rule. Hopefully that helps.

Thank you.

Yes, my friend does play T2 normally, so I will show him the decks you hav eall suggested, and how much they cost, and he will hopefully like one of them. Thanks for your help!

You can build manaless ichorid (- the bazaars obviously) with every other card for under $70. If you spend more than that either you're not using Ebay correctly or you just stink at buying Magic cards.

Ok, my friend is choosing between the following decks.

1. Goblins
2. GAT

He chose Goblins becuase it is cheap and he used to play it in T2, and he wants to play GAT becuase the other day he found some cards that could go in it.

GaT is also kind of a "Gate Way Drug" in that he'll see what playing Vintage is more like. Playing Goblins is just a slightly more broken extension of Legacy and Extended.

The decision has been made!!!!!!!!!

We proxied up both decks and trying them on MWS, and we found that GAT is a much better deck than Goblins.

The deck to be built is GAT!

Thanks for all of your help!
