Oh man, Becker hates Bomberman.  That had to burn him  Very Happy

At least he got to take out 2 GAT players in the top 8.  URBana>Merchant Scroll.  Has been since MDG was legal.  Still is now Smile

Nice thread title BTW.

My pictures, Cody will have more later.  If you have a burning desire to have caption added somewhere, just PM me and I can do that.  Specify which picture.

Steven G. and his Virulent Slivers have their way in Round 1 against Cody Vinci.

A view of the entire store from the back.

Aven Mindcensor vs. Moat!

Steven G. makes the incredibly broken play of Mox, Mox, Mox, hardcast Elvish Spirit Guide on turn one.  Bert’s hand, however, suggests that it won’t be enough.

This is about the fifteenth minute of Chris's fourth turn in game 2 against Eric Becker in the top 4.

I apologize if I misspelled Steven G.'s name.

------------------------------------------

A good event as usual.  I was thrilled with the turnout, both in terms of quantity and quality; hopefully this will be able to continue in the future.  Additionally, great prize support at this event also, including boosted support after a larger than expected attendance.  A special thanks to George and his sons, Steve O'Connell, Eric Becker, and anybody else who drove 2+ hours to come to this event; without you guys, we wouldn't be able to have events as large as this.

Only a few match notes: Energy Flux completely wrecked Stax in the top 8.  Mike actually scooped on turn 1 of game two after I played Lotus, Energy Flux.  I feel like this is a fairly good answer to Stax, although the only other artifact removal of 1 Oxidize and 1 Rushing River may not be ideal if my opponent tries to have a particular artifact stick around.  Additionally, Darkblast was good against Stax.  It was also good against Sliver Flash in that I was able to keep individual rogue slivers at bay for the duration of the match, having only to fear the combo (which I had shut down with Leyline of Singularity).

It was a lot of fun meeting some new faces for sure. Why did you put quotations marks around Sport when referring to Football Cody? hrm? what are you implying there?

I was surprised at how good fanatic was for Eric all day.

This is about the fifteenth minute of Chris's fourth turn in game 2 against Eric Becker in the top 4.

So that last picture of me (and Cody) playing vs. Chris.....yeah, I won that game. So savage, so savage.

I was pretty happy with my list, but at times it felt like I was playing too many dudes. 17 is a lot for URBana, but Cutpurse is so good. 3 Fanatics was a metagame call, they were decent, but a 2/2 split of Fanatic and Shaman would have been slightly better. I've also been advising people to run 4 Bouncers in a GAT heavy metagame, but I went for 3 expecting only a little GAT, guess I was wrong.....but I still pwned GAT.

Brandon and I both wanted to play out the finals. I didn't expect to play any bomberman, so I was running a 4th Duress in the maindeck over a 4th Red Blast, only one Mox monkey, as well as only 2 FTK's on the board. Still I went into the finals confident, maybe overconfident. Unfortunately, game 1 wasn't much of a game b/c I kept an ify 6 card hand got really ugly as I topdecked the anti nuts. Game 2 I crushed. Game 3 was epic as Brandon slow rolled a Salvagers that he was holding the entire game and combo'd me out on turn 7ish. I hate bomberman. Here's what I played against:

Rd 1: Scrub.dec (2-0) - I drew the absolute nuts both games to vs. Birds of Paradise and Gaea's Anthem though.  Very Happy

Rd 2: GWS Long (2-1)

Rd 3: Stax (2-0)

Top 8: GAT (2-0)

Top 4: GAT (2-0)

Finals: Bomberman (1-2)

So I won a Mana Drain which I traded to Brandon. He hooked me up with 4 Deltas, 3 Strands, and a bonus free Sol Ring, Petal, and Vault. Sweet and thanks for the deal.

The tourney was a blast, but slops Cody for not having blankets and pillows for all 7 guest at his freezing apartment. jk

I'm looking forward to Atlanta's mox next month. I've already located a mox to potentially host one tourney here in Charleston in November, so I'll start looking into what date works for people.

That would be somewhere between "hot" and "very hot".  Thanks for coming out; I'm glad you had a good time!

This was a great event, and I really enjoyed playing and meeting new people. Sadly, I don't have a ride to the upcoming event in Georgia.

No one in the top 4 apparently, but they found someone within 5 mins of winning it to buy it for $100 so 3rd/4th could have an easy split.

I was totally prepared to take the deck for my gauntlet. I think it's a fantastic prize. Unfortunately, there's not much else that comes close in affordability. Maybe Goblins, but that's a bit higher.

I'm not sure... I told them they should but they didn't want to. We've had a long tradition of splitting in the top 4 at Cary, NC... so it's nice to start breaking out of that habit and get some winners. I believe this is the first time we've had a winner in around 8 events.

Well we had to play it out...you said if I won that you'd make a video of me crowd surfing out of the store.

Thank God that didn't happen. :/  Eh, regarding splitting, I think Chris actually had to go soon for some reason, so that was part of it.  Another part of it is that I just wanted to go home.  Beyond that, we're lamers in NC and tend to split a lot.  That being said, based upon your "go get em" attitude, I actually have a stronger desire now to play it out than I did before the event.  I mean, you drove all the way up here to play Magic, not to split for some cash.  So, you have changed my perspective to some extent.

Thanks to everyone who liked the prize... I just wish more people who attended the tourney liked that prize Smile

Anyway, I have a question for prizes on the next tourney. If people could respond or PM me, I'd really appreciate it.

1) Do people like the 3D cards/life counters the store had? The artist that they have do them can do anything. These would be in the 5th-8th place prizes and we could have a 3D brainstorm, duress, etc. Would people rather have the 5th-8th place prizes from the prize pool I had or 3D type 1 cards/life counters (or a mix of both)?

2) Would people rather play for an unlimited Recall plus smaller prizes or like a Library of Alexandria, Beta Sol Ring, Beta Demonic, Beta Vault, Foil Delta, Foil Gush, Foil Scroll, etc. Basically, do people want a big top prize or balanced prizes down to 8th place but no big one for 1st?

Thanks!

Cody,

1) I personally think very little of life counters for the obvious reasons.

2) I like the top heavy prizes. They also attract more people.

Personally I like the top heavy prizes as well, the more people the better ya know Wink

And the life counters would be an okay prize for 9th place as a booby prize or something.

I had great fun at this tourney (even with my dismal results) and would/will definately attend future ones.

I like 1-4th place to be top heavy, just due to the fact if you survived the first round of finals, you should have your cake and eat it too.

Somebody tell Chapin how counterbalance works?
