Can I cast repeal targeting a "masked" creature with 1 counter put into play by illusionary mask, and if I attempt to do so what happens?
An opponent on MWS told me I couldn't target the creature, which I think is incorrect.
Rather, I'm thinking that I may cast repeal with x = 0 targeting the masked creature; since the masked creature has no mana cost, its CMC is 0 (therefore even if for some reason I know the CMC of the masked creature is 1, I still cannot cast repeal targeting it with x =1).
Repeal will resolve and return the masked creature to its owners hand unless my opponent does something with Repeal on the stack, such as remove all counters from the masked creature (which as far as I know no effect in the game can prevent), revealing the masked creature to have a CMC > 0. This will cause Repeal to
fizzle become countered upon resolution (oops). However, if the masked creature is revealed to have a CMC=0 (tech!), Repeal resolves.
Did I get this right?
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Is it correct that no effect in the game can prevent an opponent from removing all the counters from and revealing a masked creature?
Repeal
Card Type: Instant
Casting cost: XU
Oracle text: Return target nonland permanent with converted mana cost X to its owner's hand.
Draw a card.
Illusionary Mask
Card type: Artifact
Casting cost: 2
Oracle text: X: You may put a creature card with converted mana cost X or less from your hand into play face down as a 0/1 creature. Put X mask counters on that creature. Play this ability only any time you could play a sorcery. The creature's controller may turn the creature face up any time he or she could play an instant by removing all mask counters from it. This effect ends if the creature is turned face up.
