A retrospective on a tumultuous and exciting year in Vintage.

2007 was the most surprising year in Vintage history as well as one of its most dynamic. Not only have recent printings made a big splash in Vintage, but the DCI's tweaking of the restricted list unleashed a tsunami in Vintage. On a personal note, 2007 was particularly poignant for me. Let's stroll down memory lane and reflect upon the good times, big laughs, and great games.

Excellent, excellent article.  Part of the fun of follwing this format (aside from it being just plain awesome) is coming across impactful events in the annual review and thinking, "Oh yeah!  I remember that!"  Especially if you were at those tournaments in question.

I think the most important thing to take home from this past year is that the metagame constantly changes.  There were no 2 tournaments whose results mirrored each other very closely.  People are very quick to adapt to the last big tournament.

LOL! Most of those words are Magic Card Names.

Great Article.

Given my meta, every year since I've been involved in competetive Vintage has been like this year. Exciting, Changing, Challenging, Influential, etc.

I was butt hurt over Time Vault Errata Banning, Trinisphere PR Restricting, (secretly glad over) Gifts Restrictedness and I can't help but feel that the DCI does for Vintage something that can (only especially) be appreciated by those that opperate in a 10 Proxy Meta. Kudos to Steven for getting another WOTC.com article.

Thank you Steve, I have always enjoyed your articles, and chronicling the trials and tribulation's of the 2007 vintage meta game has been a blast.

Lets look forward to 2008, where Gush will continue to put up top 8s and Tarmogoyf is some good.

Heya,

Great article, Steve.  I think this is a really exciting time to be a Vintage player.  The metagame is so diverse right now and is trending towards aggro.  It's been a long time since it's done that.  2008 is shaping up to be a wild year.  Lets home Morningtide brings us a few more goodies to add to what the last 4 sets have given us.

Peace,

Nice article... Very informative. The only thing I noticed as being a bit off was this:

Quote
Nick Calcoteria's deck opens up all kinds of questions about the place of Gaddock Teeg in Vintage

There were two Teeg in that deck. Do you really think the strength of Dawn can be contributed to two of sixty cards? I think if anything the deck reaffirms what Deez Noughts noted as well- Goyf is a house.

Just my two cents. Thought it was a bit bizarre.

Great article Steve.  It was a nice break from the extremely analytical style you usually use over at SCG.  I very much enjoyed seeing your more creative voice in this article, a nice change of pace.

2007 was the most fun I have had playing Vintage.  The format is so exciting right now, I don't understand how anyone can not just love playing this game right now.  I can't wait to see what 2008 brings and hope I can be around at more of these major events next year so I can see it first hand!

Thanks for the great aricle!  This was a great year for Vintage.  Next year will, hopefully, continue to be as innovative and fun.  The memory's of the year were good to relive.  I was there when you took the Championship at GenCon.  Once again, good job!  Keep up the awesome writing!

I would love to go, but I won't drive it and there are no nearby airports.   I flew in and rented a car a few years back and drove 30 frightening miles on icy roads.   I won't do that again.
