Myriad Games Vintage February 9th, 2008

The Myriad Games Vintage Tournament announcement for February 9th, 2008 can be found here.

Thank you to everyone who attended the second event in our 2008 Vintage Tournament Series here at Myriad Games.

Pictures of the event are available in the Myriad Games Photo Album here.

Jeff Carpenter won the Preregistration Bonus Prize.

Marc Tuttle won the Best Deck Name Contest with: "Nice shirt, Feinstein. You spilled some Goblin on it!"

Our New Player Bonus Booster Pack continued to be appreciated. Each new player received a Free Booster Pack!

Every player that wanted one received one of Sara's award-winning Myriad Games Magical Mana Cookies!

The top players of our Liar's Dice Tournament were:

   Stefan Ellsworth
   Chad Behre
   Marc Tuttle
   John Dolan

Congratulations to our Liar's Dice Champions!

We also hosted a free sanctioned Vintage side event that began alongside the Top 8. We had sixteen players and the top 4 players were:

        Eric Dupuis with GroATog
        Rob Rogers with Goblins
        Rodney Hannigan with StifleNought
        Ron White with Goblins

We'll be running another free sanctioned Vintage side event at our next event on Saturday, March 8th.

Each tournament report posted in the Tournament Announcement section of The Mana Drain by February 16th will receive a prize! Reports must include Myriad Games in the title. Style points will be awarded for catchy titles, amusing anecdotes, and interesting coverage. Super style points will be awarded for good pictures from the event. Prizes will be reserved at Myriad Games and may be picked up at our Saturday, March 8th. As reports are added, we will add handy links to the various tournament reports from the player's names in the final standings below.

Our Myriad Gear Challenge will be expanding going forward. Since I rarely have as much time as I'd like to play challenges during our events here at Myriad Games, we'll be taking the show on the road to other events in the area. At any Magic event I attend and play in, any of my opponents that win will qualify for Free Myriad Gear to be picked up at Myriad Games at our events during the month following that event! I will still be happy to play Myriad Gear Challenges as I have time at our Vintage events, but this should expand out the number of winners and add a little bonus for traveling to other events as well.

As always, if you have any comments or suggestions about our events, please email us at vintage@myriadgames.com

I'm kinda happy with these results, for a long time I was wondering when someone would make an effective list with Trinket Mage in Control Slaver.

As for Oliver's list, I am curious how good Jace was for the tourney, I haven't done any testing with him, but he does seem reasonable for Vintage, especially since hes the only Planeswalker that is reasonable enough to cast.

"After these years of arguing I've conceded that Merchant Scroll in particular can be an exception to this rule because it is a card that you NEVER want to see in multiples, under any circumstances. Merchant Scroll can be seen as restricted in a way because should you have 2 in a hand, only one is really useful (that is, only one can get Ancestral)."

Workshop Combo? Sounds interesting. Would it be possible to get Jeff Carpenter's Shop Combo deck posted?

Jer and I would like to thank all of you who lent us stuff.  If we didn't get to thank you at the store - you should have some Myriad Money waiting in your name  Wink

Looking at the top 8, this tournament must have been a blast, seeing all kinds of rogue decks and cards that I'd have to read.  How was Jace?  I've been wondering how he would be, though I expect he's not at his peak right now, what with all the Juggernauts and Tarmodorks running around.

That Tyrant deck looks awesome! I would've loved to be at this event, with all those funky decks running around. Cheers to the innovators!

Thanks for all the positive feedback. We did not require decklists for the side event, but instead checked each deck individually for legality and proxies. Certainly those players can send up their lists as they have them available.

Did this tournament actually play through to completion without any sort of split?

Jace was a bit of a non factor. I only saw him in my top eight match and that was when I was against the ropes already. He warrants testing, but my feeling is that he is good in a heavier blue control deck. I actually feel like Jeremiah's list may be able to make use of him as a possibility. Who knows. Either way the tournament was fun and I hope to see many of the people there at Stratfordbury (tm) for TMD XII.

First off, A job well done to Jeremiah and his team for doing as well as they did despite forgetting their decks at home.

@Hulk: The tournament did play out without any sort of split. One was discussed before each of the elimination rounds, but no agreement could be made.

The Tryant Blue deck is very neat check out the thread. http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=35244.0

We always offer the options of a Top 8, Top 4, and Top 2 split. It's a simple query of all the players of each tier before they begin that portion of the single elimination rounds. If any player declines the offer, we proceed right into playing. There's also the option of splitting the prize and playing for glory, TMD Open bye options, etc. In this instance, at least one of the players wanted to play it out, so it ended up going all the way.

Congratulations again to all the players who made Top 8 and thanks again to everyone who attended!
