This came up in my tourny on Sunday, curious about the correct ruling:

I have a Chalice of the Void set at three (3) in play, and Tinker in my hand. When I cast Tinker, if I choose to sac the Chalice set at three (3), does its countering ability trigger or is it in the graveyard before the Tinker is cast? Rather, is the sacrificing an artifact treated as an additional cost to play Tinker?

Q: If I have Chalice of the Void in play with 2 counters on it, and I play Shrapnel Blast sacrificing the Chalice of the Void, will the Shrapnel Blast resolve or be countered by the Chalice?

A: Shrapnel Blast will resolve. The Shrapnel Blast player can sacrifice his Chalice to pay for Blast without fear of it being countered because the Chalice only triggers upon complete announcement of the spell in question. The spell becomes played when all steps of announcement, ending with paying all costs, have been completed (rule 409.1i). By the time the Chalice would trigger, it's no longer in play, so there's nothing to trigger.

As for you final question, I hear reading the card is still good:

As an additional cost to play Tinker, sacrifice an artifact.
Search your library for an artifact card and put that card into play. Then shuffle your library.

{x} Would have been a real "thanks" if not for this.

I read my tinker and all it says is "At the time you play tinker sacrifice an artifact" it says nothing about it being a cost :O

What about if you cast tinker with a Sphere/Thorn in play?  Would you still pay three if you sac'd the sphere/thorn to the tinker or would you actually have to pay four?  Since the Sphere/Thorn was still in play when you announced Tinker as your spell?

The cost is locked in before you start paying costs, so Tinker would cost 4 mana not 3.  The Tinker/Chalice interaction is different because Chalice's effect happens after Tinker is played.
