This is untrue.   In 2006, Wizards held European qualifier tournaments and flew out lots of European players, including a player from Spain, France, Italy, etc.   There are always a handful of Europeans who show up.   Last year they didn't hold the qualifiers or, if they did, they didn't foot the bill for the European local state Vintage champ winners as they did in the past.

I must admit that I was unaware of the qualifiers that you say were held. I suppose I'll 'just believe' you on that one.

You don't have to just believe me.  Go back into the tournament report and announcement forum circa that time or morphling.de and you will see what I'm talking about.   Someone else might even be gracious enough to dig up those announcements.

There was a few trials organized in Europe, but not that much. And about no European went to the USA for that tournament, for obvious price reasons. It's quite true that tournament would be better labelled as "North America Championships". But well, since NFL, NHL and NBA winners are already "World Champions", I guess WOTC does the same for Magic. At least the MLS champion is not World Champion ...

Have somebody hold a massive unsanctioned/sanctioned tournament in Gencon and I'm sure enough people would go to make it feel like Vintage Worlds.

Allegedly the reasons for this move are two-fold.

The first is that GenCon LLC has filed for bankruptcy, and that Hasbro (WoTC's parent company) is owed money, and supposedly doesn't deal with companies who have filed Chapter 11 or otherwise.

If you look at the Complete GenCon Event Catalog on their own website, their are ZERO Magic events listed. No tournaments, no drafts, no anything. I have a feeling the Legacy Championship may not be held their either, when all is said and done. It would be a shame to host the Legacy and Vintage Championships on different weekends in different cities, as many players would only make the effort to go to one or the other, or neither if they are split. I'd rather have both the tournaments in Chicago, as it's easier to find hotels, there'd be no additonal convention entrance fee ($80), and Indianapolis is one of (if not) the worst big cities in the US.

The second reason is that allegedly Wizards' has issues with how Pastimes runs tournaments, and I can certainly understand why. I'm not sure who's running Nationals this year (if it's WoTC themselves, or their going through another organizer), but it's not mentioned on Pastimes' website, like their other big hosted tournaments. I wouldn't be sad to see some other organizer take the place of Pastimes for Midwest tournaments.

The only other organizer I can think of who hosted the Madison Grand Prix as well as the Twin Cities one and all events north of Illinois is Steve from Misty Mountain.  That's a possibility.

Didn't the guy who won the Italian tournament end up placing in the top 8 in 06?  I think he was playing a Tendrils deck with Bobs if I recall.  He was an awesome guy.

Not true.  I met most of the Europeans who came - and there were about a half dozen

Anyone else get this from GenCon today: ?

"Wizards of the Coast’s Events
Wizards of the Coast has submitted over 400 events this year. To give everyone plenty of opportunity to plan your schedule, the full event listing will be online and available to review on Thursday, May 22nd. Registration for these events will open up at Sunday, June 1st at noon (PST). *
It’s a big year for Dungeons & Dragons with the launch of the new 4th edition. At Gen Con, the RPGA will be launching Living Forgotten Realms, a brand-new organized play program in conjunction with the new edition. You can get a taste of the new game by running through a quick Dungeon Delve or you can dive head-first into the new campaign, getting in on the ground floor!
With almost 200 different tournaments and events for Magic the Gathering, you can get your card game fix on as well. Wizards of the Coast is also offering a slew of events for the Star Wars Role Playing Game, D&D Minis, Star Wars Minis, Heroscape, Three Dragon Ante, Dreamblade, Axis & Allies, Inn Fighting and MapleStory."

Maybe Hasbro is sending leg-breakers to collect their $431,000...

In reference to the comments about a 'Vintage World Championship", the Wizards of the Coast tournament announcement merely labels this as the 'Vintage Championship' - no world included.

The lack of any modifier, such as "US" or "North American" or whatever is suggestive to me that this is still the definitive event. Besides, they're still giving out the original alternate art. I think it was probably just a drafting omission on this one page.

The Legacy Champs are still slated for Gencon, so whoever thinks otherwise should check here:

what ass. Chances are looking like no vintage worlds for me. as much as that mox ruby claws at me, the just outside of money finish from nats last year eats at me more.

at least this presents interesting oppertunities. maybe if I bomb out of nats, I can just conjure some power up and cast gush instead.

As for Prize support:
Prizes:
    * The winner receives an alternative art framed Mox Ruby trophy!
    * Top finishers win Vintage Boosters

Are these Boosters Italian Legends or Alpha/Beta heat? Does anyone know?

I've always received Italian Legends booster packs, which for the record, are terrible. Anyone who wins them would get more out of hocking them for $10 each to a dealer after trying 20 minutes to convince them to buy them rather than you actually opening them.

There's been a recent trend in offering P3K boosters as well as Italian Legends in such situations.  It won't be A/B/U, you can be sure of that...

And it seems there aren't any rares in P3K under $5 really, plus they're not scannable like Legends.  So bring 'em on.

I don't like the entry fee GenCon has on it, and the event organisation of the magic stuff is usually rock bottom.  But the Vintage there makes it worth going along, I know there's going to be a bunch of guys I know there to hang out with, and fail to persuade to go for beer with me.  And now there won't be.

Like some others on this site, I've already purchased my plane tickets, reserved my hotel room, and pre-registered for Gencon.  It really pisses me off that WotC/Hasbro would make a major change to their Gencon lineup within six months of the event.  Plus, having the Vintage Champs at Nationals in Chicago within two weeks of Gencon also makes it that much harder to participate.  All in all, I'm pretty upset over this.  I play Legacy on occasion, but I wouldn't have dropped $1k to attend the Legacy champs at Gencon, I did it so that I could play Vintage for 4 solid days and play in the national/world/etc champs.  I'm still going to Gencon, since it's mostly paid for, and I'm really going to try and have a fun time, but I doubt I'm going to be able to attend Chicago, which is really disapointing.

I'd also like to add that Italian Legends boosters are as exciting as Fallen Empires.  At Gencon I saw one guy trade his pack for two slices of pizza and another guy sold his for $10.  No one even wanted them /yawn
Portal Three Kingdoms is atleast interesting because most people haven't seen or heard of some of the cards.  Even if they have, no one really owns any.  I've received more compliments on my English Imperial Recruiters than any other card I own, even though others are more rare and/or expensive.  P3K > Italian Legends

From the looks of the side events listed on the Nationals site, most are giving out Urza's Legacy/Destiny boxes. Maybe that trend will continue to the Main event?

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=events/nationals/us08-events

It is very strange that they only moved Vintage champs to Nationals and not Legacy as well. Why split them up and put them in different weekends, and at different locations? Doesn't make much sense.

Interesting scheduling but I have to agree with it even though it presents me with a hard decision.

Most people going will be either specifically playing in vintage worlds or specifically playing in Nationals.  There isn't really a conflict of interest for players because they're two totally different groups and I can't think of anyone actually qualified for Nats who'd want to play in this also...

Wait, I know of one :p

I guess if I horribly bomb day 1 of Nats then vintage champs here I come.

I really would like to play in my first vintage world champs especially with the format being new, but at worst at least I'll get to see it firsthand and say hi to some people.

See you there

Did anyone else notice that the Vintage event starts at 11, then the Legacy at 3. I was excited to play both, but it looks like you need to make the decision to drop 3 rounds in Sad, what do you do if you are 2-1? Is there anyone to contact about possibly changing this?
