Hi all,

The tournament at Genesis Games on 6/21 was a success and a lot of fun.  It was good to see Vintage players rallying to put together a fun tournament.  Hopefully this will bring about a revival of Vintage in Texas, particularly San Antonio.  16 players played, and after 4 rounds, we cut to a top 8.  Congrats to Kevin Cron (Ch4Ins) and Kevin Binswanger (Aunisen) for splitting in the finals.  The tourney report is as follows:

Quarters:
1 - Kevin Binswanger (Bomberman)  Wins 2-0
8 - Kyle Finken (Food Chain Goblins)

2 - David Cook (Gobowins)  Wins 2-0
7 - Evan Teachworth (B/W Fish)

3 - Kevin Cron (Tendrils/Warrens)  Wins 2-0
6 - Allen Otto (Tendrils/Colossus)

4 - Kyle Larson (Goyf-less green?)  Wins 2-0
5 - Simon Christie (Dawn of the Dead)

Semis
1 - Kevin Binswanger (Bomberman)  Wins 2-0
2 - David Cook (Gobowins)

3 - Kevin Cron (Tendrils/Warrens)  Wins 2-1
4 - Kyle Larson (Goyf-less green?)

Finals
Kevin and Kevin split the mox (in half Wink  Binswanger paid Cron for his half.

The meta was EVERYWHERE off the map, predictably due to the new B/R list.  Dawn of the dead, tendrils, W/B control, U/W control, survival of the fittest.dec, shop prison, shop aggro (riddler), sui-black, bomberman, 2x B/R goblins, mono-U phid, and others were present...making this an incredibly varied and unpredictable event.  Congrats to all the top 8 finishers.  Thanks to all who played.

I am hoping to start running these monthly and will announce the next tourney shortly.  The next prize will probably be a jet or sapphire and with enough participation, we may get 2-4 prizes.  Please bring your friends and lets get Vintage strong in San Antonio!

Go go go Cron.

I'm glad to see a new metagame pick up, I hope you have more success as you hold more of these.

According to Kevin, he played card for card my maindeck Grim Long list, except with the 5c mana base described in my article.

I don't know Cron's whole list; I only saw parts of it in his T4 match.  I did see a five color manabase and Regrowth (which seemed absolutely terrible for him).

I've posted my list in the Bomberman thread, and I can elaborate more if people are interested.

Kyle Larson was playing a Rec-Sur like deck with an Academy Rector/Form of the Dragon package.

samurai_socks: I saw your deck earlier and it looked really really interesting to me.  I'm hoping you'll post a thread about it, it was really intriguing.  It reminds me a lot of a 4 Color Fish list from Eudemonia a few years ago, complete with Hide//Seek.

It was a good tournament; I'm hoping it will pick up.

And yes, Eric Miller was there playing Riddler.  I misplayed like a sack against him but still pulled it out when I needed to, including one game where I was able to set up Echoing Truth + Salvagers to bring back Lotus through Tormod's Crypt.

Hey all,

The top 8 was as follows:

Quarters:
1 - Kevin Binswanger (Bomberman)  Wins 2-0
8 - Kyle Finken (Food Chain Goblins)

2 - David Cook (Gobowins)  Wins 2-0
7 - Evan Teachworth (B/W Fish)

3 - Kevin Cron (Tendrils/Warrens)  Wins 2-0
6 - Allen Otto (Tendrils/Colossus)

4 - Kyle Larson (Goyf-less green?)  Wins 2-0
5 - Simon Christie (Dawn of the Dead)

Semis
1 - Kevin Binswanger (Bomberman)  Wins 2-0
2 - David Cook (Gobowins)

3 - Kevin Cron (Tendrils/Warrens)  Wins 2-1
4 - Kyle Larson (Goyf-less green?)

Finals
Kevin and Kevin split the mox (in half Wink  Binswanger paid Cron for his half.

I'm glad everyone had a good time and I hope you will all make it out to the next one (probably last week or so in July).  It's good to see Vintage coming together in SA.

Some comments and apologies for the slops (mentioned on TXGamers.com):

1) Alex and Billy (owners) didn't really want to play - in fact it took convincing.  But since only 14 others showed up, it was the only way to have 4 swiss rounds without a bunch of "bye rounds" making even 8-8 pairings with 16 players.  2 people getting byes in a 14 man tourney is probably as bad as 2 extra players being owners...but I can promise you they are legit and reluctant to play in their own tourneys *and neither made T8*.

2) Failure to check decklists:  No real excuse for this (4 strip mines is an embarrassing oversight), but I'm sure this won't happen again.  It was all an issue of #3.

3) People registering decklists at 12:58.  I managed to get them to open the store early (10am) and had Billy in on his day off to help out.  I am very greatful they were willing to do this for us.  As posted, early registration was at 11, and the tourney was to begin at 12 noon.  As it was, the last decklist was submitted at 12:58 and the tourney started at 1:05pm.  As everyone knows where the store is now, and we can all get things going on time, I am sure the next event will be prompt and people will not hold up the show. (Prior to noon, there were only 9 people registered).

4) Food:  Somehow we didn't have pizza, though snacks and drinks were available.

I personally apologize for any shortcomings of the tourney, but I think that overall it was a good event and brought out a lot of new faces.  I was unaware that so many of us Vintage players are near SA, which is great to see.  I will be announcing the next tournament shortly.

Thanks again to Genesis Games and all who played.

It's worth noting that TheWhiteDragon IS Eric Miller Smile

I was glad to see a 16 person event, especially with so many of those driving in from 1-3 hours away.  Shame we didn't get the whole Houston crew (where were you, Mike?).

The metagame was odd. I can't believe I actually ended up playing Kyle, with Survival, TWICE.

What Stephen says about the list I played is correct.

Thanks for organizing, Eric.  Next time I'll try to get a few more locals to proxy up some fun decks!

Band practice kept me in Houston....and then that fell through.  I'll be there for the next one and probably rock a Shop deck instead of Belcher like last time.

Sounds like a pretty crazy meta, was it good times?  Holly balls, 4 Stripmines!! I'm totally going to play Stax  Wink

I'll be sure to pack some Pyroclasms in the SB for those Goblin decks too.

Mike

p.s. Did that other guy show up from SCG who was at the last San Antone tourney??  Forgot his name...

Does anyone have any idea what that fish deck looked like?  I am working on something similar and if evan is ok with it i would like to see his decklist.
