Hello all, LF wants to know how the LED's are used in Vintage and also in the old Academy decks. Since you must disacard your hand upon use, it sounds not as good. Can anyone please clarify for me? thanks tons!

LED really only sees play in combo decks.

Basically, you activate it in response to your own Draw7 or spell thats going to draw you a bunch of cards (i.e. Yawg's Bargain).  This way, you discard your hand, get the 3 mana, then draw the cards.

It's not used terribly often anymore. There are still some uses though.

Ichorid can use it because it wants to discard it's hand anyway. Same with old R/G Madness decks.

If you use it in response to Yawgmoth's Will, you can still cast all the cards you just discarded. Plus, you can replay it from your graveyard and use it again, and since you don't have a hand anymore, it's just completely free mana.

It can be used with Auriok Salvagers to gain infinite mana, and after you have that mana, you can use a Spellbomb to draw your deck into your win condition.

When it was unrestricted, you could build a deck around getting all that free mana. If you have more than one out at a time, any one past the first activated at the same time don't have a drawback. Ichorid wasn't around then, But R/G Madness decks were, and then main deck that got it restricted was Long, which used it with Yawgmoth's Will to build a lot of storm and mana.

LF~

Back in 1999, you could announce a spell and then pay for it with Lion's Eye Diamond.   Pat Chapin used to do this at Gencon.   He would announce a spell like Timetwister and then pay for it by sacrificing LED to pay for it.  Although this was legal, Vintage players were too wedded to control decks to make that play.   They were afraid of Force of Will and Mana Drains.

Lion's Eye Diamond is amazing for a number of reasons, but primarily because you can respond to any tutor or draw7, such as Demonic Tutor for Wheel of Fortune, by breaking the Lion's Eye Diamond.   There are also more subtle uses, such as responding to a Regrowth or breaking Lion's Eye Diamond after resolving Yawg Bargain.

Thanks a ton Smmenen!( srry if i sent you two pm's by mistake if i did. im used to other boards with a different system) So its like: While searching for a Draw7, you can then activate the Diamond and get the RRR for the Wheel and get a new hand. That is awesome, nice tech as well.

Or you could have LED in play and cast wheel with other mana and in response to dicarding your hand for wheel, you crack the LED for mana that you think you can use for the 7 cards you are about to draw.

Hey guys, remember when you could have 4 of these and 4 Burning wishes?  Ah, those were the days.

"Boy, the way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the Hit Parade. Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days! Didn't need no welfare state. Everybody pulled his weight Gee, our old LaSalle (a car) ran great. Those were the days! And you knew where you were then! Girls were girls and men were men. Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again. People seemed to be content. Fifty dollars paid the rent. Freaks were in a circus tent. Those were the days! Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win. Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin (five dollar bill). Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song. I don't know just what went wrong! Those Were the Days!"

ok LED = use in response to draw spells.

If there's a rules question about it, please start a new topic.  For strategy questions as relates to a specific deck, open a separate thread in one of the other forums.

thanks!
