Now these are the types of Top 8s that indicate a golden age of Vintage to me.

Thanks for posting this!

This will be the VERY FIRST Tournament Results that go into y data set for the New Era of Vintage!   It's the first 33+ player tournament of this time period!

And, oh, what a Surprise!  Control Slaver wins.

I must very much disagree with my friend Shockwave.   I am very much not looking forward to 2005 again.   I'd much rather enjoy the forward oriented diversity and balance of the Tyrant Oath, Flash, Grow, Painter's Servant, Mud, Mono Red Workshop Aggro, Ichorid metagame last year with only Scroll restricted to weaken all of them a bit than replay 2005 all over again where Slaver was just clearly the best deck!

Oh well!

I would say this new meta is still in the infant stages.  Aside the crazy slaver ELD tourney, it's been showing results just like GAT did.  I wouldn't say this is a repeat of 2005.  After all did GAT not come back from being dead and reign for a year?

Chalice x 4, Null Rod x 2, Life from the Loam, Strip mine, Wasteland x2 and Mishra's Factory x2 were an absolute beating all day long.  There's probably a few things I'd change in the main deck and sideboard after playing the deck but not those cards.  No way.

How cool is it to drive up with someone and split the finals with them!

Team 0-2 drop ftw I guess?

I wouldn't go to far to say, Slaver is the best deck in the format. There were a ton of people playing it there, my guess would be 5-6. You have to factor, when so many people play a certain deck, thats going to up the chances of it winning. AJ is a very good player. I'm sure he could have pilet other decks, to first place.

I played AJ in the semi-finials, I thought I had game one won, when my Goblin Charbelcher hit the table with enough mana to activate it with only one land left in deck. My Bayou was only three cards down. I thought I had him next turn, he top deck Mana Crypt which able him to cast Rack in Ruin. I was like you main deck them.He Tinker Tian and won.

Game two I had to Mulligan down to six. I had plenty of mana spells Cabal Ritual and Dark Ritual but not enough busniess from what I remember. I think he Force something important and Tinker again, as in game one for the win.

Yes your deck was an aboslute ass beating on me. Having to deal with Force, Chalice, Null rod, Strip Mine, was completly not kool for me. You pick a very good deck to play there. AJ and you were the only ones who beat my Belcher deck, everyone else, I 2-0 them, congrats on the great finish.

Oh well!

There are a lot more ongoing power events now than in 2005.  We'll see the deck-to-beat change as often as people figure out how to beat them.  And honestly, I think every deck is pretty much in the same tier right now.  You can even play shit like Rector Trix and win.  Everything is viable; just look at that top 8.

I would. I honestly think Control Slaver is the best deck in the current format. Since the restrictions were announced I've been testing and tuning Control Slaver and clearly it paid off with this first place finish. 5 CS players in a 33 player field isn't exactly dominating numbers. I'm not sure what the exact deck break down was but I think you are right with that 5-6 CS decks guess.

Yeah, game one I savagely top decked you FTW. Game two you Land Granted which allowed me to correctly use my Mana Drain to win the game. I don't think Rack and Ruin is such an obscure card to be running in the main deck especially when you look at the metta game. There were 4 workshop decks in the T8 at the last Blue Bell. With the local popularity of Shops and the "X" open metta game slots in CS it made sense to me to play with that Rack and Ruin. When I sat down for Round 1 my opponent was playing workshops.

I was more referring to the fact that there were 7 different archetypes represented. I think that is as diverse as you can get. Surely, Slaver will be good, but I'm not convinced that it will be the best deck yet. It's still very early.

4 Slaver out of 33 people certainly isn't the end of the world, we've had some crazy GAT GAT GAT GAT GAT GAT GAT shop top 8's if I recall correctly.  The pilots were also fairly good players (AJ and Dan), so "dominating" 1/4 of the top 8 isn't 2005.

5 shops (me, 5c, 2 red, affinity)
8 aggro (6 fish, sui, goblins)

That'd be more:
4 shops (you, 5c, 2 red) and
9 aggro (6 fish, sui, gobs, affinity
No shops in my deck.  I guess you'd know that if I'd done a decklist...

I had an awful day of it, we got fairly lost on the way to a tournament we've been to plenty of times before and turned up like 5 mins from the end of round 1, then we all proceded to scrub out (Mike was nice enough to allow 2 of us to be paired, and we played a 1 game match that Ultima lucksacked his way through; Jason just didn't bother playing).  At least we got some good EDH played.  Then Jason got thrown out the strip club we stopped in on the way home for good measure...

I was the keeper player that boarded that trash card Energy Flux against you...

Sorry I couldn't make your tournament today.

Also, I think I am taking keeper again... lol
