Recently, I've been playing a few casual games with a friend who is currently playing Oath.  While Oathing, his graveyard slowly passes across what I deem to be the threshold between play and out of play.  It continues to the point where the entire area in front of him is supposed to be his graveyard (and the area slightly above to be the area in play).  This graveyard placement was common throughout our games and did not end after the Oathing finsihed.  I find this incredibly annoying and quite confusing as to what is in play and what isn't.  When I politely asked him to place his graveyard in the graveyard, I got the response: "I need to see what's in my graveyard at all times."

I was wondering if something similar were to happen in a tournament setting is there any official ruling regarding the placement of graveyards that spill out into play?

Thanks in advance.

This is similar to when a player is dredging his graveyard i can assume, I feel that there is no comparison to what is in play and a pile of in-line cards flowing from the bottom of a players library to the bottom of the table and in front of him. Not to mention any player who would bitch about this and pretend that they don't know what is in play is probably either a terrible magic player and doesn't understand the basics of magic or is just trying to "bust" there friends balls. I mean really what do you expect a player to do look through his GY after every time priority is passed? I feel as though this is specifically to create a problem and feel as though you should maintain game state better. As long as the GY is neat and orderly you shouldn't have a problem with it, tables are only so big.

There's no rules saying a graveyard must be a single pile with each card directly on top of the next, nor even a rule stating the graveyard must be placed directly next to the library.  These are just how people usually do it.  The graveyard order must be clear and maintained, and the graveyard must be kept in such a fashion that it's clearly separate from other zones.

There is absolutely no reason why a player cannot spread his graveyard out so as to make the individual cards more visible, as long as the above guidelines are adhered to.

For those of who played back when things like Ashen Ghoul were common, spreading the graveyard out was part of the norms of the format (Extended) at the time.
