The 2009 Vintage Challenge Series at Pandemonium Books and Games

We're running again and after a 26 person turnout for our January event, I have high hopes to have an even higher turnout for this event.  We've got plenty of space and an Ancestral Recall up for grabs at this event!

Pandemonium Books and Games
4 Pleasant Street
Cambridge, MA 02139
617-547-3721

*WHEN and HOW MUCH?*
Saturday, April 4th, 2009
The entry fee will be $25.

***MODIFIED DATE***
This event was scheduled to occur on Saturday, March 28th, however due to a select few players asking for a different day, ELD's Birthday, and me wanting to go the Rob's Epic TCG $5,000k tournament on the 28th, I'm using my special powers to move this event forward a week.  There doesn't seem to be any local PTQ's, vintage, legacy, or other special events myself, the store calendar, or other vintage players would get to, so hopefully this date sticks.

 ***MODIFIED STORE HOURS***
The store will be open at 10:00am and the tournament will start at 11:00am to accommodate players that will travel from outside of the Cambridge / Boston Area.    If people are running late, we will be able to hold the start of the tournament to ABSOLUTELY NO LATER THEN 11:30am.  Please make every effort to be on time.

*PRIZE*
The Ancestral Recall is in EX-, the face of the card looks good, there is no obvious scratches or folds on the card.  There is significant wear on the edges of the card, more noticeable on the back of the card then the front.  The rest of the prizes will be based on attendance.  The following is a possible prize breakdown for 32 players.

1st: Ancestral Recall (Guaranteed)
2nd: $150 Store Credit
3rd-4th: $75 Store Credit
5th-8th: $25 Store Credit

To clarify the prize structure, no additional prizes other then the Recall will be given away if there are 14 or less players.  The buyback on the recall will also not be honored in the highly unlikely event that there are less then 14 players as well.

*CASH CONVERSION*  For this event, Store Credit can be converted into cash at a rate of $3.50 per $5.00 of store credit.  Don't find what you want in our growing collection of Magic Singles?  Not a Science Fiction fan?  Didn't find the best board game ever?  Oh well, here's some money!  This was extremely successful for our last event, and I believe that since many vintage players have most of what they need and getting special cards that aren't common is always hit or miss, I believe the cash conversion system is critical to a larger turnout for these events.

The buyback on the Ancestral Recall Buyback is $300 Store Credit or $270 cash.

*PREREGISTRATION*
Of the people who preregister and show up for the event, one lucky person will receive $10 off their event entry Fee!  I'll announce the winner on the day of the event.  Preregistration is free and you can e-mail chris@pandemoniumbooks.com, call the store at 617-547-3721, or reply to this forum with your name to preregister.  If you preregister, please make every attempt to make it to the event.  If you preregister and cannot make it, please contact myself or the store so that you can be removed from the list.  We will try to start with as many players as possible for the event.  It's important to preregister as it gives us a clearer idea of how many people to expect for the tournament.  It is important to reply with your name.  Simply saying "Prereg" is not sufficient because I may not know who you are.

*PARKING & TRANSPORTATION*
Parking is available around the store, metered spots are $.25 per half hour, Meters close at six.  Metered spots ticket for leaving your car for over 2 hours in a metered spot.  This has not been an issue at Vintage events, but it looks like things have changed in Cambridge.  There are pay lots that have a day rate of $8 less then 1 block away from the store and there's the Green Street Parking garage.  If possible, I recommend taking the MBTA Red Line to Central Square and walking 1 block North towards Harvard Square and the Central Square post office (when you come out, if you see a CVS, walk up the main street with the CVS on your left.  If you see Bank of America/Citizens bank, those should be across the street on the Right.  You'll see a seven-11 that's on a corner on the right hand side, we're behind it on the side street)

*PROXIES, DECKLISTS AND RULES*
This is a 15 Proxy vintage event, no additional proxies are allowed.  Proxies must be written or drawn on a Magic: the Gathering card.  Full rules text on the card is strongly recommended.  Proxies must be marked on your deck list and must be on a Magic: the Gathering card.  No paper inserts are allowed.

Official ELD proxies are allowed for this event and do not count toward the proxy limit.

It's requested that you bring a typed or neatly handwritten deck list with you, if you do not have one please arrive early enough to write it up, deck registration sheets will be provided.  Please mark off deck totals and proxy totals as well as what cards you are using as proxies on your deck list.  ELD Proxies are allowed and do not count towards your proxy limit, but must be marked on your deck list.  All deck lists must be written or printed on standard size 8.5" x 11" paper.   Please make sure your name is written on your deck list.

***IMPORTANT***
Please make sure your penmanship is clear on your deck lists.  Avoid abbreviating cards on your deck list, and write out the full name of each card that you are playing.

Even though this is an unsanctioned tournament, there is a significant amount of prize support for this event.  To maintain integrity, we will be using Competetive Rules Enforcement and penalties.  Please do not abbreviate cards on your deck list.

This tournament will be rated in TMD's new rating system.  I personally think it's a great idea, especially in New England with many stores working together to provide a valid tournament scene.  With that said, if you have a TMD account, please include that name on your deck list a well.  This tournament will be posted as soon as possible after the event occurs, usually it takes 1-2 weeks due to other store operations that are time sensitive as well.

*ROUNDS, BREAKS AND FOOD*
32 Players and under, 5 Rounds.
Over 32 Players, 6 Rounds.
Time: 50 Minutes

The store has many snacks and drinks available at any time.  For players traveling from out of town, we'll do a community order for food from any of the local establishments as demanded.  We will not do community pizza, most people who attend events at the store grab food on their own from the food establishments.

*WE BUY CARDS*
As we are a Magic: the Gathering dealer, we buy and sell cards all the time, and you can buy and sell with us all day!  Need cash?  Want to enter the tournament with Cardboard?  We will have an extensive buy list for all cards.  For some cards, up to 20% may be awarded as a bonus if traded or if store credit is received.

While trading is encouraged, players are not allowed to buy and sell cards to each other.

*SIDE EVENTS*
For Vintage players and our regular crowd alike, we'll be making it a full day of events!

At 1:00 or after Round 2 of the Vintage Challenge: Shards of Alara / Conflux Booster Draft, $15 entry.  Regular Store Credit prize support ($5 per entry into pool)

At 3:00 or After Round 4: Cube Draft!

at 6:00 or after Swiss Rounds: Vintage Constructed, unlimited Proxy Tournament, $5 entry, 100% entry converted into store credit.

Any questions definitely call the store.  If anyone feels like I missed something, definitely replay and I will update the post!

I've been consistently impressed by this TO's commitment to the format.  He puts a great deal of work into his tournaments to make them the best experience possible, and he's exceptionally attentive to player feedback.  If you haven't had the chance to go to one of his events, I'd strongly encourage you to give this one a try.

Recall means some serious business. I might actually have to try and win this one =P

Also, just to echo DA's comment, Chris puts in a great deal of effort to run a great event every time. Keep the turnouts high!

Not being a player from boston, are there any tips on how to get to this store, where to park, if I can park at a train station and take a train in, how far the train stop is from the store etc.

The one thing I remember delivering groceries in a tractor trailer to cambridge, was the traffic sucked absolute balls.

I take the train in from the Alewife station:

http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/lines/stations/?stopId=10029

Parking is like $5..mebe a little more. Get on the Red Line, and like four stops down is Central Square. After that, you have to walk like half a block, and take a left at the 711.

Pandemonium has more directions on their website:

You can also take the commuter rail into South Station, which is directly on the Red Line:

http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/

I'm guessing Worchester would be the most convenient to you. You'd have to get up a bit earlier though too; it takes the Providence train about 1h20m to get into South Station. Most commuter rail stations have parking though. All that info, including station adresses, train schedules, fares, and parking can be found on the MBTA site.

With under 2 weeks away and 0 preregistrations, I added the previous incentive to preregistration!  I'd really like to get an idea of how many people are interested in coming to this vintage event!  Thanks all!

Great store, great prize structure, and smack dab in the middle of a solid community.

Sadly I'll be PTQ'ing it up. Good luck everyone!

The super-secret tech on parking is the lot across from my apt at 187 Green St.  It says reserved for store X, but I've been parking there for 2 years on weekends.

In particular, some are marked "Reserved for Employees of Stax, Inc."

Perhaps the business owners keep forgetting to add a counter on their upkeep.

14 Prereg'd so far.  Here's the list I got:

Steve Guilerm
Tim Landale
Christopher Mason
Eric Dupuis*
Jason Ford
Paul Ewenstein
Blaine Christiansen
Demonic Attourney*
Pat Timmons
Eli Hamblet
Kevin Goscinak
John Longo
Jason Kenney
Reid Duke

* - Awaiting conformation.  ELD is trying to make it, DA is First Post, I'm assuming he's coming.

If I missed your name, please let me know either through e-mail (chris@pandemoniumbooks.com), PM, Replying, or calling the store (617-547-3721).  If I misspelled your name or Nick Name you want to use for the tournament, please print it clearly or type it on your deck list.  Deck Lists are used for your registration name and I'm awful at spelling anyway.

We had 16 prereg'd last time and we got 26 players, so I'm really hopeful about the attendance for this event growing to 32 people.  Keep it coming in! Remember, if you do not preregister by the end of tomorrow, you won't have a chance to possibly win $10 off your tournament entry.  All you have to do is tell me you are coming and then show up.

Thanks everyone for another successful event!

23 players, gave away the ancestral recall, $70 to 2nd, $35 to 3rd & 4th, and $15 to 5th - 8th.  as soon as I can get the decklists typed up, we'll have the standings and top 8 decklists posted.  it might be a week or 2 depending on how busy the store is over the coming weeks.

I'm down to only a Mox Pearl for power, so unless I get something snazzier, we'll have a less top heavy event prize support in the next event.  Sadly, it won't be until august before I can run another vintage event as things have gotten pretty crowded for our store's event calendar.

Thanks for another great event Chris.  The prize payout was great, though Ancestral Recall does make it a little top heavy with smaller turn outs.  I agree that the Mox Pearl will give you more options, though hopefully the turn out will be even better at the next one!  Congratulations constant improvement to the store too.  There was tons of interest in drafting, and the store was full of energy in general.  Several people in the room were new to Vintage, and people were very interested in watching matches.  The layout of the store is perfect for competition, as always.  I find it very easy to stay focused there, even when it's busy.

I split the Ancestral with Ben Lukas, an established Legacy player.  Ben shows up at the OTE Wednesday Legacy events I coordinate in Worcester, and he's crossing over into Vintage.  He asked me what was good a while back, so I gave him my list.  He made Top 16 at TMD Open with it, losing in the Top 16 due to a "blast" being pyro instead of red elemental on his decklist.  With that error fixed, it served him well again, as he all his matches right into the finals.

No one took the cash buyout, but everyone who won is local and attend the regular events at the store, so I'm sure they'll spend it.

The event went smoothly, we started late due to people having trouble finding the store and getting through Harvard Square where a Bomb Threat shut down a portion of Cambridge / Mass Ave making it difficult to travel from the direct north of the store.  The vintage player base seems to be growing and shifting, and I'm glad to see a healthy mix of people playing the format.  The day went well with multiple side drafts and some of my local players showed up later in the day for drafting.  I'll be adding deck lists this evening, I already bribed someone to type them up for me.
