Wow…what a weekend.

As usual, rather than write a narrative, its easy for me to write my report in topic form, so here we go.

Props: As always, thank you to the players.  After reading through all the commentary in the Vroman post about Alan’s pitiful prize support, and seeing the player reactions, I am reminded that tournaments exist only to the extent that they have player support.  For that reason, thank you, thank you, thank you for coming out and sharing in the experience that is TMD OPEN.  I hope each and every one of you enjoyed yourself and will come back.  If there is anything I can do to make your experience better in the future, feel free to write me.  I welcome feedback.

Props version 2.0: Okay, so you have player support.  Tons of people ready to battle out in Vintage competition.
Q: How do you ensure that the event runs?
A: Hire good judges!
With two level 2 judges on staff that busted their humps all weekend, things went quite smoothly.  The first time I worked with Jeremy and Joe, there was a bit of a learning curve to overcome in just simply how we did things.  Now a few events in, I feel like we are starting to gel.  Often times, I would think of something that needed to be taken care of and I would look up to see Joe or Jeremy on it already, or vice versa.  As a matter of fact, the one thing I disagree with in the Vroman thread was the way the players disrespected the judges.  Seriously, guys, Judges give so much of themselves(12 hour work day anyone?) and don’t get enough praise.  Thank you Joe, Jeremy and all judges.  I appreciate you guys more than you know.

Player space: I apologize as I know some of you were a bit cramped on Day 1.  Gaming ETC is a big store, and we would have been fine, but they had 2-3 times as many Yugioh players as the normally have on a Saturday.  In the future, I will try to plan ahead better to fight for as much space as we can manage to make it as easy for you all to get around as possible.

“Did I seem preoccupied?”:  At events like this, I love that I get to catch up with old friends I haven’t seen in a while.  The problem is, you have to catch me at the right time.  On a number of occasions, someone would come up and talk with me when I was trying to fix a problem or enter results, or pair a round and I may have appeared to be disinterested in the conversation.  PLEASE, if you felt like I was disconnected, don’t take it personally.  I was just very busy and it was not my intention to give anyone the cold shoulder.  I didn’t want to shun anyone, but I had a lot of time sensitive issues that I was handling.  If you felt ignored, please accept my apologies as it was not intentional.

Team Competition:
This highly competitive competition to determine bragging rights came down to the wire and was determined by the wording in my original post for this event.  I had chose to include top 16 points toward total points and in the end it caused team Meandeck to edge out Team 18 year old girls are naïve.  The teams event took in $108(12 teams * $9 per team) and so the $51 trophy and $30 in cash were awarded to Meandeck, the remaining $27 went to Team 18 year old girls are naïve to be awrded when I see them next.

Finals Team Standings
50 pts 1st Team Meandeck(Steve Menendian, Paul Mastriano, Eric Dupuis)
46 pts 2nd 18 Year Old Girls Are Naïve(Travis LaPlante, Chris Hatcher, Marc Tuttle)

The rest of the lists:
You will see Day 1’s top 16 and Day 2’s top 8 below.  The rest of the lists are generously being typed up by Steve Menendian.  Big thanks to Steve for doing this.

Write a report: If you enjoyed the event.  Write a report.  Tell everyone how you did, what you enjoyed, and what sucked.

Video Coverage:
I really wanted to do video coverage to be recorded and posted later after I failed at achieving this at TML Open 4.  The problem at The Leak was that I couldn’t put a table near the judges station to plug my camera into the computer running the event, and when I had my old laptop recording on the other side of the room it would freeze up.  My solution for this event was to plan ahead and setup a table jutting out off the reg table.  Round 1 came with a Steve M feature match, however, such a crowd gathered around the table that my judges and I could not get in or out.  We decided to can it for the day, but with a smaller group day 2, and with an opportunity to renumber table 1 further from the reg table, we were able to make it happen for day 2.  Therefore, if any of you are interested check out the great coverage at http://www.ustream.tv/search/recorded/all/iamfishman/most_views/1
When you click on one of the videos, in the bottom right corner it will tell you who is playing.  Enjoy!!!

Free Side Event Day 1
1st/2nd Place Split – Carlos Cordoba + Chris Roberts(Mana Drain and Phyrexian Dreadnought)
3rd – Jeremy Barcell(TMD Open T-shirt)
4th – Jay Carter(TMD Open T-shirt)

Free Side Event Day 2

4th – Jay Carter(TMD Open T-shirt)

An interesting note about Byes:
I determined the proportion of total players who had purchased byes and compared it to the proportion of top 16 players who purchased a bye and found that the proportion in the top 16 was LESS than the total proportion for the whole population.  Granted, I know that this was a single sample of observations, yet it may suggest that byes aren’t overly unfair to those who don’t have them.

Many errors for decklist issues: Guys I can’t stress this enough.  An error from a bad decklist is the one error that should never be made.since you have plenty of time to double and triple check your list.  Judges don’t like giving penalties for decklist errors anymore than players like getting them, so be sure to always double check your list.

At any rate, on to the main event.

Day 1 - 113 Players- 7 rounds of swiss- cut to top 16

RIP Mogg Fanatic...at least you are still better than Fire Bowman!!!

I was once asked on MWS, what the highest I ever finished at a TMD Open was.  I replied, "I've never played in a Waterbury.  I was then called "A TOTAL NOOB!"

Ray, thank you for holding this awsome event.  Whether 20 people, or 120 people show, your events are always worth the trip.
Props to Matt and Sean for strong day performances, Jason Ford for winning day 2 and making an awsome homebrew deck, and that jerk Jeff Green for kicking my ass in the top 16 Smile

Thank you for the report. After having stopped playing Magic for some time, I'm itching to come back to one of your events. It's been some time and I always had a blast, and a lot of stories from leaving all the way to getting home. The next event, I'm there for sure.

Bernie Parisi doesn't have a sideboard, and the video didn't work for me for the t4 and finals, otherwise great job and id like to see more video coverage for vintage.

I'm pretty sure that the prize support Ray has settled on should become the universal form of prizes for all vintage tournaments.  It is extremely fair for both the T.O. and the player, the player has the choice of going for credit or just taking cash (which almost always happens anyway.)

The bye for sale system continues to be an excellent way to generate additional revenue judging from all the people I saw round 1.

The team competition in its new form is good. However I do not think that any additional wins in the top 16 or top 8 should count.  I'm not saying this strictly because we would have won the trophy otherwise, but once you cut to elimination rounds, it ceases to become a team effort and becomes focused on individual performance only.

One issue I had, is the additional charges for proxies.  It wouldn't be an issue if I hadn't built 2 decks out of my skimpy collection, but seeing as the entry fee has finally reached the p9 standard of 30 bucks, would giving everyone 15 proxies included in the price affect your bottom line all that much?

Overall the tournament was an amazing time as can be expected from any tmd open and I'm looking forward to a giant tournament in the summer, Unless of course it will be held at Stratford because I can't imagine having over 120 magic players in that room in addition to all the other gamers wasting space.

My two intentional draws in round 6 and 7 put us two points behind your team at the end of the swiss.  If I had tried to win one of those rounds, like Rich Shay did, then it might not have been an issue.  But I don't disagree with you.

Really, really amazing tournament Ray!  Your judges were also stellar!

This really was a lot of fun.  I'll have my T16 report up tonight hopefully, and I'm already looking forward to the mysterious TMD Open 13.5.

Hey Ray,

Awesome event!!!  I have finally joined TMD, and can say that your events made becoming part of this community simply irresistible.  What is so unique about your events is the high level of competition combined with good old fashioned fun.  From my experience, TMDO is a place where good players can be rewarded for creative design, and is hence a spawning pool of innovation.  Whether I’m getting Selkie Slammed round 1, or lashed into submission by overgrowing vines of kudzu in the finals, I can count on TMDO to be filled with the very best Dominaria has to offer.

Keep up the good work, Joel

What?  I thought he's never placed in a Waterbury.  What a TOTAL NOOB!

Can't thank you enough Ray, this was one of the best events I've ever been to!  Well run and most of all, great people.  This is one of the few Waterbury's I didn't make elimination and it was still a complete blast.

I can't say enough about how much fun I had in my matches and talking with my opponents on the day.  Just swell folks.

That was an excellent tournament as always Ray!  Do you have any idea what the TMD XIV playmats will look like?  Something tells me they will have Tez, Vault, Bazaar, and Fatestitcher on them...

Ichorid didn't win jack!  I want to see Tezzeret owning it up on that thing!

Also, the dude from Time Vault would be appropriate.

Thansk for holding another awesome event.  I made it to both TML and TMD this year and since I had so much fun at both I'll continue to mark them on my must-go-to list.  My first vintage tournament being so big was a little scary but fun nonetheless. Also, my first post here.  Very Happy

I have to disagree with this. the team competition is to see which team performs the best, overall. If a player from the team makes the elimination rounds, points earned in those rounds should still count. It's a part of the tournament.

If a team has 2 players in the top 4, but loses the team event because they had less points after the Swiss, I don't really think that'd be fair. And I don't think it should be possible that a team could come in first, second, and third, but not win the team event.

An interesting note about Byes:
I determined the proportion of total players who had purchased byes and compared it to the proportion of top 16 players who purchased a bye and found that the proportion in the top 16 was LESS than the total proportion for the whole population.  Granted, I know that this was a single sample of observations, yet it may suggest that byes aren’t overly unfair to those who don’t have them.

this might be a fluke. The only time I compared players with byes to players in the elimination rounds, 7 of the top 8 had them.

Awesome event, very well run.

I agree with Joe on the teams thing, I think the points should carry all the way through the top 8.  That, however, wasn't anything that I had to worry about.

Still, I had a great time there, and saw a truly awesome play that may have made my weekend.

Player A has Swamp and Sol Ring on the board.  Player B has Strip Mine, City of Brass, Sol Ring, Gorilla Shaman.

Player A: My mainphase, Slaughter Pact your Gorilla Shaman?
Player B: Resolves
Player A: Pass
Player B: Untap, draw Null Rod, tap Sol Ring, play Null Rod, sack Strip Mine, murder your Swamp.  Pass.
Player A: Untap, upkeep, draw.  "Oh shit..."
Player B: Game two?

I agree that the top 8/16 should count for  team points as well. In all reality if you are making the top cut you already had a slew of points and as Steve said look at how drawing in effects a teams points. Over all is a event and all matches should count.
