Hello,

First and foremost thanks for reading this thread. I was just wondering since I've been away from magic for about 4 years now. I haven't played since joining the marines. What would be a contending deck coming into an unpowered meta? I myself own a sapphire, pearl, recall, and drains. I just would like to rejoin vintage as it has been the format I've always played. As I've heard from friends back home there are no proxy tournaments. Just looking to get a decent deck going, one which could playout decent against the field, considering I would be going into an unpowered unknown meta really. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that Oath would probably do pretty well. Even without the moxen oath is going to provide a very fast strategy while enabling you to have some counter-magic for the larger "bombs" that may be getting played turn 3+ in an unpowered meta. I myself have never really played in a unpowered meta am not entirely sure what you are going to be facing, I would think that you are probably going to see some tribal decks; goblins, elves, slivers (oh god), ect because those decks can be made fairly powerful when you have access to the larger cardpool. Other strategies that I can think offf the top of my head would be the effective legacy decks (see themanaleak or thesource). I would also thing you are going to see some modified decks from whatever your local T2 meta looks like.

Really, just shouting stuff off the top of my head, if you don't like the idea of Oath you could look into "Re-animator." The virtue of that would be the toolbox of cards you have to reanimate. Having a toolbox style build can certainly be useful if your walking into a unknown swarm of decks.

Welcome back, good luck.

Oath is good, but in unpowered meta It will be heavy sideboarded against, and I assume a lot of players will use fish decks as well. You could try fish yourself since you have the cards for it.

Btw what kind of unpowered meta is this? It just seems weird that a whole tournament would be without power, it would be legacy almost.

Yes,Tarmogoyf is probably better than Chameleon Colossus, but comparing it to Tarmogoyf is like comparing your girlfriend to Carmen Electra - one's versatile and reliable, the other's just big and cheap.(And you'd run both if you could get away with)

Apparently it is completely unpowered. Almost should be a legacy meta, since everyone is without power. From what I'm hearing its a lot of suicide black, weak mono u control, and goblins. As I live in a very small town so that might add to the point of the non powered meta, but the shop does get a turnout of 20 or so people for their type 1 tournies.

I'd go with ad-nauseam i think.....Just race 'em! you should be faster, and without power (and no fish decks?) you should have a cake-walk.

i think vial-fish is an interesting option once the power is gone.  vial is terrible in fish because it directly contradicts your best card, rod.  rod is also terrible in an unpowered meta, so it seems a nice trade.  with vial, you have the benefit of artifact mana accelerants that also give your fishies flash and uncounterability.  any time there is a t1 vial, you get off to a start that feels powered... with a 2 dollar uncommon.  not too shabby for an unpowered meta.

Most decks are better with restricted cards.
Restrict: Drain, Workshop, Bazaar, Skullclamp.
Unrestrict: LoAlexandria, Manavault, Frantic Search, Burning Wish, FoFiction,TfK, Regrowth, 3sphere, DemConsultation.
Fix: Zodiac Dragon, Transmute Artifac

you could also try some BUG aggro and abuse your Recall with tutors and 2 or 3 regrowth effects. Smile

Maybe I'd try sui black. Which is good if people can't vomit their hands on the table.
Ofcourse Ichorid would be a good choise, but you'll need Bazaars.

In a completely unpowered Meta, I would go with a TPS build - it's going to be creature heavy and they will be playing creature removal - you might even see mass removal.  By making them play with dead cards your going to have an advantage.  Since Blue is weak your speed will be unimpeded.  Oath allows people to have answers to creatures ala Diabolic Edict, Plows and more.
