I wanted to play around with the concept of mana burn now that M10 is around the corner.

My original idea was a Mana Drain / Duress but I figured that that is much too powerful. After that I thought that burn is more appropriate to red so I made another version. Which version do you think is more interesting and how would you change the card for the better?

Option 1
Mana Burn
Sorcery
 {U} {B} Target opponent discards a card at random. At the beginning of your next main phase, add X to your mana pool, where X is that spell's converted mana cost. You lose life equal to the converted mana cost of that spell.

Option 2
Mana Burn
Sorcery
 {R} {B}
Look at target player's hand and choose a non-land card from it, that player discards that card and loses life equal to its converted mana cost.

I think it is too strong, it is like a distress with the potential of causing enormous amounts of damage (what if he got a spell with CMC 10 in his hand, would be totally insane, and in most cases it should be able to do at least 3-5 pts of damage)...

And the word should probobly be:
Target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card, Mana Burn deals damage to him or her equal to its converted mana cost.

I suggest that the discard is at random instead, it is both more red and I think more appropriate from a power point of view.

My first post was made before both options where up. The second one is certainly more intressting. Would it be better if it was at the beginning of your next precombat main phase?

Next precombat main phase is probably better.

I think the red one burn spell should be random too, because there's gamble, goblin lore and all sorts of coin flip cards in red.
