So today is my second appearance at a tournament since last month. I was really looking forward to it because last time I had a great time with everyone. My deck wasn't near ready (non-proxied event) but luckily I could borrow cards from Marius and Duncan. When we arrived there at 10:15 I had 45 minutes left to sleeve up my deck and get the cards I was looking for (I couldn't find anybody to borrow Cities from) but today was just my big unlucky day because I ended up missing a hell of a lot more than only Cities and a Sea =P I was starting to ask people and stressing out, I was already too late! The judge walked up to me and explained he had to give me a game loss, I understood and he tried to help me get things ready with the help of Rudy, God bless the guy. It wasn't enough and I ended up having to change everything in 3 minutes so I took the match loss and Arjan, who I played last time, offered to borrow a LED, 2 seas and a Vamp Tutor. I was very happy with this because combined with the cards Rudy had to offer I could play the same list as I wanted to play initially. I was kind of bummed out starting the tournament off with a loss this way but I could've prepared better I guess, or whatever.. Having to borrow cards from everybody gets confusing and I hope my deck will be complete soon! Okay, so we start this report in round 2:

Decklist:

Black Lotus
5 Moxen
LED
Sol Ring
Mana Vault
Mana Crypt
Lotus Petal
Memory Jar
Wheel of Fortune
Timetwister
Time Walk
Ancestral Recall
Brainstorm
Ponder
Merchant Scroll
Necropotence
Mind's Desire
Yawgmoth's Bargain
Windfall
Tinker
Demonic Tutor
Vampiric Tutor
Mystical Tutor
Imperial Seal
3 Grim Tutor
Yawgmoth's Will
Tendrils
Regrowth
Chain of Vapor
4 Dark Ritual
2 Cabal Ritual
3 Duress
3 Thoughtseize
2 SSG

4 City of Brass
3 Gemstone Mine
2 Underground Sea
Forbidden Orchard
Tolarian Academy

SB:

Duress
Thoughtseize
DSC
Pyroclasm
2 Hurkyl's Recall
2 Rebuild
2 Tormod's Crypt
Island
Swamp
3 Extirpate

Second round I played Arjen. He played a Keeper deck with Vault/Key. Game I mulliganed into a decent hand with Necro, Grim, Mystical Tutor, two lands and a LED? He won the die roll and at the end of his second turn I Mystical Tutor for a Dark Ritual and try to cast Necro. He Mana Drains Necro and uses this mana next turn to cast a Fact or Fiction with Gifts, Top, fetch, dual and another card (I've made no notes this tourney because when things start off with a match loss I though it wasn't really worth it) I ended up seperating Gifts from Top and added the fetchland to the Gifts pile. The Top pile ended up being the 3-card pile. Arjen took the Gifts pile and passed the turn. The next turn I had Dark Ritual, Grim Tutor, Mana Vault in hand with LED in play. I took my time but ultimately decided to go for it, I first played the Ritual (Arjen got a good read on me here thinking I would probably not Duress him after the Ritual), then I cast Mana Vault, tapped one more land and cast Grim Tutor, cracking the LED in response for black. Arjen proceeds to Drain my Grim Tutor and uses that mana to cast Gifts Ungiven next turn. I have no cards in hand and I see Regrowth, Will, Time Vault, Lotus. Needless to say, he won.
The second game I keep a risky hand with only one land but Ancestral, Duress. I know Ancestral is often better but this time I wanted to make sure that I could dig for an extra land. So I Duress his FoW away and he has a pretty safe hand with Impulse, FoW, Trinket Mage and lands. I take the Fow and next turn I try my Ancestral, he Drains. Dammit! Now my Gemstone Mine has become a Lotus Petal and my hand didn't like that. I lost this game shortly after, I kept on playing too long because he had Vault, Key with Confidant out with way more life. I was hoping for a surprise Inkwell, FoW, FoW? Oh well, a quick 0-2 and at the hands of a very skilled player. In this match I made the mistake of using up the Mine later for another peek with Thoughtseize. My hand had some weak acceleration and expensive cards like Bargain and Desire so waiting it out with Mine in play would've been better.

The third round was against Martin. He was playing a Null Rod aggro deck with black disruption like Duress, Seize and Hymns. I won the die roll and started off with a Memory Jar with mana to spare so I cracked the Jar. Then I played out my hand and Timetwistered (lots of mana again) and won the game with more acceleration and Demonic into Will. The second win was much like the first but he got a Duress in turn 1 letting me discard Ancestral. My first turn play is Thoughtseize and I remove his Hymn to Tourach. He plays a Confidant next turn. I then play a draw7 via moxen and pass. I now have Will and a Ritual in hand, but also a Mystical tutor. I pass the turn and he reveals a Tormod's Crypt. He attacks with his Confidant and plays another one, he passes. I realize he hasn't played the Crypt and Mystical for another Ritual in my upkeep to finish him off with Will. I kinda got lucky there and my deck was really generous this match. So yeah, I got my first win under my belt and am at 1-2 now.

Round four was against Merrin and his Merfolk deck. I've met playing him on MWS a couple of nights before so we know each others deck already and I also know he's playing Rootwater Thief, a very effective way of beating my deck. He wins the die roll and slowly develops a board while countering all my threats. I actually had a good hand with lots of bombs but he countered each and everyone of them. I manage to get a Desire of for only three cards and it fizzles completely. He wins with Lord of Atlantis + Mutavault beatdown.
I side my robot in and play a first turn Seize followed by a turn 2 Tinker for Colossus. I win this game quickly.
The third game was pretty exciting as I had a way of getting Necro into play fast but with Tendrils and DSC in hand. On the other side, if he's playing with Roowater Thief it's not so bad to have your winconditions in hand =) I keep and Duress him again, I take away his stifle and leave him with Annul (wait, it gets better) I try playing Necro next turn and it doesn't get countered. Ok, nice. Oh wait, it does get countered. Merrin also kinda forgot about the ecnhantment thing on Annul so tries to counter it last second. We're playing a casual game here so I don't mind, if I was up 4-0 or something in a big tournament it would've been different but I was fine with it. Because really, not taking the Annul in the first place was MY mistake, not his. He indeed plays out his Rootwater Thief and he removes Will, Twister, Jar, Wheel, Bargain, Lotus and a Ritual before finishing me off. With Tendrils in hand I came close to getting a fair stormcount but it wasn't meant to be as he had answers for everything from that point on.

Round 5 was against Dennis and he's playing Staxx. Before we start he's joking about not facing combo and really wanting to, but now he's playing me. I win the die roll, which is VERY important in this match-up. I start off with land, mox, mox, Windfall. OK, good start. Dennis is stunned, he has no lands in his new hand. He draws nothing and passes the turn. I play a Yawgmoth's Bargain with a landdrop to spare and win.
Game 2 was more exciting for him as he got a sphere into play and later a Metalworker which put another Sphere into play and a Juggernaut. He cut me off from my eot Rebuild with the extra Sphere so I have to wait another turn. In his next turn he first wastes my land, forcing me to float mana. Then he attacks me and I'm forced to Rebuild now. He taps his worker after that and puts everything back into play again easily, I scoop.
Game 3 I fan open a hand of Lotus, basic, basic, mox and more mana. I toss it away and Marius afterward said he would keep that hand when playing against Staxx, and beginning. Maybe he's right but my instincts told me not to. I mulliganed into a hand of Mana Crypt, Land, Twister and 3 other cards I was about to shuffle into my library. So I Twistered and played a Mox. I had Tinker in hand and Time Walk and more non-blue artifact mana. He plays a chalice at 0 and a Welder. I continue to make misplay after misplay here. A small audience gathered and I was talking to everyone, the judge was there too and it was kind of tough although I had the right cards to do what I wanted. Yes I ended up winning with DSC but I could've Time Walked sooner for another permanent in play (instead saving it for after Tinkering, but Tangle Wire made things tougher), I could've NOT played my Ruby when Chalice @ 0 is on the table and I could've cycled my Rebuild in my upkeep with Tangle Wire and as many permanents as counters are on my side. I've missed all those things, even when I thought about doing so beforehand. I really need to get used to the atmosphere at tournaments and play my actual cards more opposed to online testing. Dennis is a great guy and I ended up buying an Imperial Seal from him for a good price. The best thing of this match was the part with the Mana Crypt. We both had a Crypt and I had two good throws before Tinkering it away. He had like 3 bad ones in a row before the one hit with DSC was enough. So now I finally know what jedi mindtricks are, because everyone basically agreed on Dennis getting tricked right there =P

The last match of the tournament and I can make reduce the damage to 3-3. I'm playing Bart who's playing Mana Ichorid. He wins the die roll and he starts of with Leyline, Chalice and Bazaar. After a turn or two I eot Chain his chalice and go off with Wheel next turn. I don't remember the follow up exactly.
Game 2 he Unmasks me when I have Lotus, LED, Twister, Wheel, Ritual, Ruby and something else, no land. He removes my Lotus and I topdeck no source. He gets a strong grave the turn after and I need to topdeck if I want to win this game. I find a Petal and get away with Wheeling again into a land drop, Ritual&Cabal and a Grim Tutor. On both occasions he used my wheel to set up a very scary grave but lucky for me I didn't have to pass both games. These games were the most fun because we both got the cards we were looking for but I just so happened to win the race this time. Both are very quick decks! I ended up hanging out with Bart some more and he's a great guy.

So I went 3-3 (3-2 in actual matches) which is a smill improvement over last tournament. I ended up 11th and won a booster for my troubles. No foil Tarmogoyf unfortunately but I bought some more cards from Rudy and thanked him again for borrowing the Cities, Extirpates and Windfall. Without them I could not have played the deck at all today. Having found Elvish Spirit Guides and Xantid Swarms allows for me to play a different version of the deck. Before we went home I joined the table of Marius, Martin, Dennis and Arjen and we played some more games there.
Bart, Duncan and me went home again with the train and Bart and me got off at Amsterdam Central station while Duncan still had to travel further.
We took a walk through town, some fresh air is nice after a long day in one room with a lot of players. And we ate a big doner pizza thing wrapped up. It was huge and very nice. Bart had bought a beautiful unlimited Lotus, a Mox Pearl and a Mox Emerald for a nice price, can't recall exactly. I see my beta power is having its effect on people. David wanted to buy power as well last time after playing him in the last round. The same goes for Bart. I think it's a good thing and we need more power/vintage players in Holland. Me, Duncan and Bart are thinking of trying to set up something here in Amsterdam because there is a nice place where FNM is being held already. The same thing needs to be done for Vintage in Amsterdam!

I'm glad to meet some new players again and I've had 5 fun matches. Made mistakes in each and everyone of 'em and still learning...
Arjan: thank you for borrowing the final missing cards and congratulations on your first place finish.
Marius: thanks for borrowing so many cards and allowing me to play them when double sleeving wasn't working.
Duncan & Dennis: thanks for the deals and borrowing Grim beforehand
Rudy: for borrowing the cards needed to play in the first place but also having the best prices when it comes to selling Magic cards.
Arjen, Martin, Merrin, Dennis and Bart for playing and being really laid back.
Deck: for being awesome and getting more broken than last time at times, including a turn 1 kill against Martin.

Oh yeah, Martin and I played some quick games afterwards and in four games I turn 1 killed him twice, and the other game I kept a hand with only rituals and Duress because I was too lazy to mulligan. I rip a Bargain from the top and kill him T2 or maybe T3. I think he hates me =P Marius returned the favor with his Ad Nauseum deck though, killing me T1 as well.

I hoped you guys enjoyed reading this report and I'm looking forward to the next event..

EDIT: forgot to add the decklist xD

I just wanna clarify something. I was the round 5 opponent.... but my list did not play any welders (AggroMud). Also twice in the game you played a Draw7 which ended up winning you the game because I did have a really descent hand against combo. My hand in the 3rd game was something like shop, waste, trinisphere, 1sphere, chalice and something else. Afther the twister I kinda ended up with a hand poorly equiped for handling combo. But thats how the game works. We had some great fun and regarding how bad I played throughout the day you deserved to win  Smile

Eventhough I suck at Magic I still had a blast Smile

Ah, it wasn't a Welder. I had to think of a drop you made next to the chalice that wasn't a sphere but I couldn't recall so I figured it would've been a Welder or something. But yeah, turn one draw7s turning your hand into a disaster is something you have no control over. I thought you played well and I was the one making the mistakes. Anyway, thanks for your response!

@LennoxLewis,
Great to see you're enjoying yourself and are planning to become a part of the Dutch Vintage scene. I wished I had played a real deck instead of ANT which failed me miserably during the event. Thanks for the credits on the cards (my collection is getting plundered at every event, guess it's nice to have players around with such huge amounts of cards Wink haha )

I just had to pay you back with that turn 1 kill after you took me apart in our previous encounter... it was a fun time hanging out again Smile

Hey Onno,

You're not the first one to switch Arjen for Arjan Wink it happens ALOT.
I'm glad I could help you out with the missing cards.

My day went something like this (from memory):

Match 1 vs Arjan Bos with 5c Keeper Control (I put him on Tezz):
I lock him out of the game fairly fast, he manages to cast an impulse but doesn't really get anything usefull and scoops.
Game 2 is about the same as game 1, he manages to play a Qasali Pridemage and uses it to blow up a chalice but I have a solid hand and lock him out of the game shortly after.

Match 2 vs Maarten Wevers with Oath:
He drops an oath after a few turns but I have a smokestack, I get hit once by a Hellkite Overlord but I topdeck a duplicant and eat the dragon, smokestack eats his board the turn after and he scoops.
Game 2 i keep him off green mana untill I have a chalice @ 2. This game goes on for quite awhile and I have an enormous board with uba masks, null rod, chalices, crucible + strip mine, tangle wires and 3 welders. I kill him eventually with recurring barbarian rings.

Match 3 vs Jasper Wevers with Sui-Black (bitterblossoms are nasty.dec Wink):
Game 1 is pretty tense, i have a board containing a welder, 2 tangle wires and a smokestack. I keep saccing 1 tangle wire to the smokestack and putting it back into play with welder and manage to lock him down just long enough for his confidant and bitterblossom to kill him.
Game 2 is all his, he drops a confidant, bitterblossom and negator somewhere in the first few turns and I die fast.
Game 3 seems to be going his way with triple wasteland screwing my mana base, at one point I only have an Ubamask and 2 lands (mountain and barbarian ring IIRC) while he has a bitterblossom starting to generate tokens. I topdeck a bazaar and find another one the turn after. I start to desperatly dig for a powder keg by 'drawing' 5 cards per turn. After 2 turns I finally find a powder keg and blow up his tokens, then keep blowing up his new token with a recurring barbarian ring. He slowly dies to his bitterblossom and I win the game with 2 life left.

Match 4 vs Duncan Keijzer with GWSx:
Game 1 I lock him fairly fast, he scoops after a smokestack starts to eat his board.
Game 2 I drop a few lock pieces but he bounces them EOT and combos me out on his turn.
Game 3 I start off with a few lockpieces including a tangle wire, he plays a hurkyl's recall in his upkeep and plays a time walk in his main phase. At this point I thought the game was over since he had plenty of mana and I had nothing to stop him. Fortunately for me he drew no business spells at all and could do nothing but pass the turn. I drop my lock pieces again on my turn and he scoops a few turn later.

Match 5 vs Jaap Brouwer with 5c Stax:
Game 1 I start with shop into crucible, he plays a time walk turn 1 and tinker into a Sundering Titan turn 2. I drop a smokestack on my turn. He plays a Karn on his turn and swings with the titan. I topdeck a welder and play it. He plays a Triskelion on his turn, kills my welder and I scoop.
Game 2 I drop a smokestack and still have mana left to cast a Rack and Ruin, he has a shop, wasteland and mox ruby and plays a memory jar. EOT I rack and ruin the memory jar and mox ruby and waste his wasteland on my turn. Smokestack eats his shop and we go to game 3.
Game 3 he starts with a chalice @ 0 and tinker for triskelion on turn 1. I drop a bazaar and dig for a red mana source to cast 1 of the 2 rack and ruins in my hand, I find a barbarian ring and cast a sol ring. He ancient grudges the sol ring and wastes the barbarian ring and I die to the triskelion before I get to 3 mana.

Match 6 vs Goswin Zeeman with Tezz:
Game 1 I have a solid opening hand of 2x crucible, 1 tangle wire, lotus, mox ruby, strip mine and 1 more card which I can't remember. He thoughseizes me turn 1 and takes the lotus. I topdeck a mana vault and strip lock him.
Game 2 he goes turn 1 land + voltaic key, I drop 2 moxes, sol ring, smokestack and wasteland. Smokestack eats his board and along with a chalice @ 0 and @ 2 lock him out of the game.

Top 4 vs Boaz van Driel with Ichorid:
Game 1 he does his ichorid thing, I strip his bazaar but die a few turns later to zombies.
Game 2 I have welder + tormod's crypt and plenty of artifacts to weld. He scoops after pretty much all his key cards are RFG.
Game 3 he mulls to 5 and opens with unmask taking my Trinisphere which I could have cast on turn 1. Then he drops a bazaar and discards 3 non-dredgers. I waste his bazaar and he's left with 2 cards in his hand and no dredgers in his graveyard. I build up a board with 2 powder kegs, 2 mogg fanatics and a welder by the time he gets to 7 cards and he decides to scoop.

Final vs Hero 't Mannetje with 5c Stax:
He offers a split which I accept.

Sorry if i missed something (which I probably did Wink) since it's all from memory, I didn't made any notes.

It was a fun tournament and the deck preformed really well, I only had to mulligan twice to 6.
Btw, if you manage to start some vintage in Amsterdam I'll surely try to be there Wink

/Arjen

@ Marske: Yeah, thanks. I'm really enjoying the vintage scene in Holland because I really feel it's getting bigger and bigger. Besides the casual and online games we play we need to have ourselves a real rematch at a tournament, that would be nice! And to make it perfect, it needs to be another combo match. Ad Nauseum or TPS I don't care. Don't think about running Uba Stax!

@ Liiva: Yeah man, you really ripped through the field. I wasn't expecting a lot of Staxx but it made up 25% of the field I believe. Next time I will have my deck ready and not having to borrow cards from 5 like different people. But yeah, I was really considering dropping and hang it @ Rudy's before you had the last four cards ready.
So thanks again! I kinda feel better about the loss against you the other day, now my earlier comments on your plays are confirmed.
And it would be great so see you in Amsterdam, I'll let you know when we get something going..

The game versus you was a blast Onno. I had great hands and dredging my deck in your turn through Wheel of Fortune really put the pressure on you. You played out the cards well and didn't give me a turn. Game 1 I hit 2 narcos, 2 bridges, 1 dread return, a hypnotist but no cabal therapy. that ended up costing me the game!

Looking forward to set up a frequent testing group in Amsterdam!

Still feeling that tremendous ass whooping I gave you with Uba Stax on MWS are you ? (what are we 15-3 in my favor now ? Wink ). Vintage in Holland has been on a real rise these past 2-3 years and it's been awesome to be such a big part of the scene for me, I'm really glad we're seeing new players like yourself enter the format.
