The first N.Y.S.E. Challenge was quite the success and the details have been worked out on our second event - N.Y.S.E. Challenge II.

When:

Saturday, August 29th.  Registration for the event begins at 11:30 pm.  First round begins promptly at 12:30 pm.

What:

$25, 15 proxy non-sanctioned Vintage tournament.  UTOG rules will be in effect.  Deck registration sheets and round slips will be in use.  1st place prize is guaranteed, all additional prize structure becomes guaranteed at 30 entrants.

The prize structure will be as follows:

1st: Alpha Mox Emerald
2nd: English Mana Drain
3rd-4th: Foil Demonic Tutor
5th-8th: Force of Will
9th: 4x Sorrow's Path

If the winner would prefer an Unlimited Time Walk that will be available with a difference in cash being paid out as well.

The highest placing deck with no proxies will also win an English Mana Crypt.

Where:

Brothers Grim Games & Collectibles
1244 Middle Country Road
Selden, N.Y.
11784
(631) 698-2805
brothersgrimgames@gmail.com

Store website:

http://brgrim.com/index.htm

This location is used for Gray Matter pre-release events on Long Island.  It features enough space to comfortably sit 100 entrants and has ample parking as well.

8 man non-sanctioned drafts will be available throughout the day.  Food will be available on site, including pizza and soda.

Brian Paskoff, a local level 2 judge who helps run Gray Matter pre-releases on Long Island will be judging this event.

So come out and spend a day playing Vintage.  Come with friends and meet new ones on the day.  Watch and see if Ryan Fisher can defend his crown, or if Elves days are numbered.

If you've got any questions please PM me and I'll get back to you shortly.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Glad you got Grim to agree to do it. It's such a good store for something like this.
Unfortunately I will be away for school so I can't make this one (I'm actually gonna try to come home but that's unlikely).

Thank you running this on the 29th. I can almost guarantee that several of us from Penn State will be coming.

I'll be gunning for those 4x Sorrow's Path.

Some other things potentially going on this day. We'll see if I can make this one.

Oh, and a new venue! Cool, though the last one was fine.

I was down at Grim tonight and there were at least 10 of us playing vintage; I know all of them but me will be at the event. It was really nice to have so many people playing, and I definitely have to at least in part thank Nick for that.

@Josh - No thanks are necessary.  I love Vintage and I love our community.  I want to grow it as much as possible.  Maybe one day we'll see someone from the Island or NYC bring home the painting from Vintage Champs.  Nothing would make me happier.

Sounds like another soild event .
Thank you Nick.

@Keith - I really hope I get to see all of my friends from Philly there.  I've spoken to a bunch of people in the last few weeks who were unable to make the first event and seem to all be making the second.  I think we're in line for an awesome turnout.

Some other things potentially going on this day. We'll see if I can make this one.

Oh, and a new venue! Cool, though the last one was fine.

@David - The venue is awesome.  Most card shops are cramped and have zero space for anything but the tournament running that day.  Grim is an incredible site with more than enough space to run a major event there.  If I ran a Lotus tournament there, and had 80 people show, I wouldn't be worried about space.  In fact, we'd have enough to run drafts as well...

You're a New Yorker now - you don't need to see family, or go home!

In all seriousness though, I hope you can make it - but priorities are priorities...

Thank you running this on the 29th. I can almost guarantee that several of us from Penn State will be coming.

I'll be gunning for those 4x Sorrow's Path.

Those Sorrow's Path are pretty awesome.  I think the next 9th place prize is going to be a playset of foil Carnival of Souls.  I'm up for suggestions though...

I'll be there, playing this time.  Good luck kids.

@Jeff - I'm looking forward to seeing you do some spell slinging in lieu of endless trading.  I'd love to do some testing at the event too - off to the side, if you're amenable.

Hot damn, I am definitely in.  Keep em coming, Nick!

@Matt - Looking forward to seeing you there.  Hopefully you'll have a very nice painting that you can show me on the 29th...

With all the people coming, I might have to put together a deck that Mr. James Hangley and I were talking about just to see if it's as good as we think it might be.

i'd love to make it for this, but there is a ptq the same day in edison, nj.  Setting up as a dealer is going to have to take priority, sorry Nick.  BTW my birthday is 9/1.  I expect tens of thousands of dollars at Blue Bell Wink

Good luck with the event!

With all the discussion of proxies in Vintage, and in an effort to reduce the number of proxies in use (and to push players to acquire the cards that they proxy) an English Mana Crypt will be given to the player who finishes highest with no proxies in his deck.  I am going to continue this prize at all future events.

We will also have Long Island's own Brian Paskoff, a level 2 judge, judging the event for us.  Besides being a generally nice guy, Brian's an EDH nut, so you should definitely bring your EDH decks and talk shop with him...

Just out of curiosity. Can one play a sleeved Alpha Mox Emerald? Would the rounded edges pose a cheating problem? I've never actually tried to play Alpha cards in sleeves so I'm just not sure.

You can play a sleeved Alpha card. As long as you have opaque sleeves, it shouldn't be a problem. Though, if the sleeves get too worn that it becomes obvious, you'll have to change sleeves.

Quote from: Magic Floor Rules
Authorized Cards
Alpha cards (cards from the first print run of the core set) may be used in decks containing non-Alpha cards only if all cards are placed in completely opaque sleeves and only if the sleeves could not be considered marked. If sleeves are not used, Alpha cards may be used only in decks that consist exclusively of Alpha cards.

Would anyone be able to pick me up from the LIRR Train Station in Ronkonkoma? That seems like the closest drop-off point to Selden. PM me if this is a possibility and I'll ask if there are any other Brooklynites or Manhattanites who need the same.

I was kind of thinking the same thing, though I think I'm probably only going to be able to make the Jim Hanley's event on Sunday. If there are rides available (anywhere along the LIRR), go ahead and post them, I suppose.

I honestly don't remember the last tournament that I went to with black bordered power as the prize.  I really want to see what everyone thinks about this.  If I get a good showing (which I expect to) then I would love to run the prize as Alpha or Beta power instead of Unlimited power.  If the community would rather play for Unlimited Sapphires, Jets and Walks, that's also an option.  I'm open to change, but I thought this was a nice break from the norm.

If the winner would rather an Unlimited Time Walk that will be available, with around 50 dollars in cash thrown in.

@Storm

Where are you coming from?  I'm going to be leaving from Oceanside sometime on Saturday.  If you need a ride to the event you can meet up with me earlier on Saturday morning - I would pick you up from the Oceanside train station, and would take you from there.

In terms of prize support I put the offer of the Time Walk up because while I think it's cooler to play for black bordered power, I don't know that everyone feels that way.  And while I'm not one of the masses, I personally think that Alpha is way cooler than Beta.

@David

That offer is good for you as well.  I can fit two more in my car - as I'm going to be taking Max on Saturday.

@Matt

I've had a bunch of people come to me and say that they were going to be coming.  I really think that the attendance is going to be great.  I will scale the prizes up with the attendance.

You are quite correct, alpha is waaay more cool than the common-as-muck beta versions.  Volcanics are a bit of a problem, but hey, Slaver's not much of a deck these days...

I am planning on being here.  Jeff Anand bring your best drinking hat.   And I have my local store interested in running some events, especially since the store owner has a big box full of LE/AN/AQ and Unlimited goodies to begin unloading.  Still, shame about the PTQ clash.
