What You Need to Know: With 8-24 people, we will have 4 rounds of swiss and a cut to top 4. However, if we have less than 8 we might need to re-organize the structure a bit so it is important for me to get a head count ASAP in order to determine how best to announce the tournament.
In general (unless this grows out of hand in popularity and numbers) I think I'd like to keep these tournaments under 5 hours so a strict 50 minute rounds rule will be applied. We are starting an hour earilier to ensure that even if the rounds go to time, we have sufficient time to finish before the store closes
When?
Sunday August 30th, 2009 Arrive at 2:30 to register. The tournament begins at 3:00 sharp Please, PLEASE be on time or, IF you think you'll be late then call me or cell message me at (917) 561-5224 and let me know.
***NEW*** I ask all participants to prepare their deck lists ahead of time. These will be collected at the end of swiss so I can prepare an adequate TO report to post here on the drain.
Where? Jim Hanley's Universe 4 W33rd st., between 5/6 avenue New York, NY
(short walk from Penn station and right next to Herald Square, shouldn't be hard to find, but call me if you need directions)
Tournament Format Unsanctioned Vintage (Type 1) with up to 15 proxies permitted (must be on a card and with Sharpie so it won't run or add thickness. All cards must also be in sleeves. Please try to make/bring your own proxies. If you need proxies, let me know up to 48 hrs in advance and I can provide them Entry Fee: $15 4 rounds of Swiss/ cut to top 4 Prizes (based entirely on attendance. $5 is a space fee that goes to the store, the rest goes towards the prize structure) With 10 people the prize structure would look like this: 1rst - $55 2nd - $25 3rd/4th - $10 each
Try to email or call me if you have questions or concerns.
This last tournement was pretty sucessful, lets keep it up.
I'll see you all Sunday!

He hasn't updated the post, but the TMD calendar indicates that this event is scheduled for August 30, so I would presume that's the day for this.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can make this one. Money's tight and I have to make sure I have enough for Nick's tournament the day before.

I'll be at this event, of course.
@All NYC and N.Y.S.E players. Please let's try to support each other's player bases. I'm going to be at the 29th event that N.Y.S.E is running out in Long Island AND I'll be attending this event. I want to see if we can really establish this as more of a single player base instead of 2. It's be nice to have 2 different 30+ person tourneys to choose from every couple of weeks that are both in the NYC/Long Island Area.
For those who come into NYC from elsewhere for the JHU events I offer this advice on price of transit. Don't bring a Car (if you have been or were thinking about it)! Parking is way over-priced in Manhattan and taking the subway is just plain cheaper. I think most Long Island Railroad Trains come into Penn-Station anyway so you should be able to just walk from the train to the event pretty easily. Also, to reduce the fare on the Train try to make sure at least 1 direction is off-peak. Is this a problem for folks? The starting time of the event is currently 2:30. Does this starting time + the presumed finishing time of about 7 or 8 pose a problem for peak vs. off-peak?

The train is actually pretty expensive too, depending how far out you're coming from. In my experience if you have at least 4 people it's cheaper to split gas and parking (as opposed to a $20 train ticket each). But yes I agree that NYC/LI should try to be as integrated as possible.

I want to make it to these events, but I've had some plans on the last few Sundays that I haven't been able to move around.
I didn't know that there was an event on Sunday, but I'll try and move things around to make it.

Actually, as a more general question, if there are reasons that people might choose to attend these events at Jim Hanley's Universe but are not, please post them here so we can see if they can be addressed.

Sorry for taking so long, things hAve been crazy for me this week... Also, I have the decklists for the last event but lost the top 4 breakdown sheet. I remember the faces of only two of the top 4 from JHU 4. If you remember the names, post them here. Regardless, I'll try to have the lists up Saturday. Also, after this next tournament is over, I will ask for help when needed in posting the decklists. I am on vacation and still have been too busy to type up all the lists in one shot

How many showed up for this event? I couldn't make it due to time issues; only so much time for Magic on any given weekend.

I would also be a no-show for this weekend because I would have class (yes, class) during the tournament this weekend only.
